Irsi' CONTENTS HISTORY OF PERRYSBIJRQ AN APPRECIATION OF THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIGN CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ALUMNI ADVERTISEMENTS Five KLAE 5 QLD-- 2033- History of Peerrysburg ln 1816, parts of the United States Reservations, including the present site of the village of Perrysburg on the lower Maumee River, were surveyed for settlers by Alexander Bourne, and Surveyors Joseph Wampler and William Brookfield in accordance with the Act of Congress. The United States was given all unsold lots and out-lots of the town plot of Perrysburg in 1822, on condition that the public buildings of Wood County be located there. For the purpose of attending to the erection and repairs of the public buildings of the County, a special session of the board at Perrysburg was convened in 1823. A Court House for Vv'ood County was built at Perrysburg in 1823. A brick building was built to replace this in 1843. Along with the march of events and the accomplishment of brave deeds in pioneer days, journalism kept pace with the current topics of the day. ln the Maumee Valley, the Battle of Fallen Timbers over-shadows all other historical events, and present-day historians are prone to overlook many deeds that were recorded in the local histories of the Maumee Valley. So rich is it in the point of pathos and humor that a long and continued story would have to be written in order to do it justice. Strange to say, less than a hundred years ago, Perrysburg was a larger and more important city than Toledo, The Perrysburg Journal of 1853 compliments the Baby News- paper, The Toledo Blade. March 10, 1853, Silman Clark published Volume No. 1 of the Perrysburg Journal, in the same building which houses it now. Like an old grist mill it stands against the vicissitudes of time and circumstance, in spite of the years and the steep embankment, where it stands on the brink. Education on the Maumee, dates back before the War of 1812. A private school was maintained by the settlers, first at Miami and later at Fort Meigs. A grade school was organized by J. YV. Ross in 18-16. The first high school was founded in 18-18 by A. D. Wright. The high school building at this time was a brick structure, 60 X 90 feet. Because of the increase of students entering P. H. S. every year, the building was enlarged in 1868. This building was destroyed by fire in 189-1. What is now the grade building was built in 1895 and enlarged in 1917. The present high school building was built in 1931. The high school enrollment has increased very rapidly. In the first year of our school, 18-19, the student enrollment was 50. Today the high school en- rollment is 333 students and the enrollment of the grade school is 575. Perrysburg High School was the first school in this section to become a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and her standards are maintained year after year by a very competent faculty. In 1925 We became a member of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. This year's Senior Class is proud to say that it is the first class to graduate from Perrysburg High School since it has become a class A school. Seven Q Q BLA 5 '57 fi? 5 I5 .,x T omg X a...lNL egg' Xxxx N An Appreciation of the New High School ln thinking of our new school from a Senior's viewpoint we, perhaps more than any other class, appreciate the many advantages and opportunities which it offers us. Our beautiful auditorium, which in a sense reminds us of a college chapel is in itself an inspiration for our convocation periods. Then too, along the line of dramatics we have opportunities never before offered to us, with our spacious stage and beautiful curtains, scenery, and lighting effects. The attend ance at various affairs held in this auditorium has indeed been good. The gymnasium is another very fine feature of our new system. As every one will agree, from the very fine attendance at the Basketball games, the public derives almost as much benefit and pleasure from the gymnasium as do the pupils themselves. Thus we feel that there is a closer feeling of relationship and interest between the community and the student body. Also the gymnasium has afforded an opportunity this year, and will even more so in years to come, for the students to become stronger and more physically fit individuals. Turning a moment from the social and athletic features of our school, our attention is centered upon advantages offered to us for developing the mental side of our nature. The class rooms are large and very well ventilated. Together with these qualities, very beautiful pictures, significant of the subjects taught in each room, adorn the walls, and are in themselves an inspiration to one to study and better one's self mentally in every possible way. We Seniors consider ourselves very fortunate in being able to spend our last and best year in this new institution and feel that we are much better prepared to meet life's problems as an alumni of P. H, S. As a parting word we wish to advise the under classmen to make the best of their remaining years in Perrysburg High School and grasp all the oppor tunities that are offered. Riggle The class of 1932 Wishes to thank Mr. Riggle for the support he has given us through the four years of our high school career. His good advice, amiable attitude, his sincerity and viewpoints have helped us greatly in making our class a success. He has done much for the development of Perrysburg High School. Ten MT. Q. C. Twenty-Seven 2 fri 2 -5 awe Class Prophecy By Helene Baker After traveling abroad very extensively I returned to Perrysburg and being very eager for news of the Senior Class of 1932, I visited some of my old friends, First, I heard that our class president, Thomas LaFarree, is the manager of Southern California's football team, while James Inman is the coach. Margery Acklin is now giving art lessons at the Toledo Museum of Art. Norval Coil who is in the movies has Donna Schoenberger as his leading lady, in his next picture. Velma Swartz is editor of the Ladies' Home Journal. Helen Christian and Dorothy Reitzel write the material for the Home Economics Section of this same magazine. Frederick Boetsch is starring in the motion picture, A'The Return of Frank- enstein. Ella May Plummer, his faithful wife, helps him with his make-up. Helen Sweet is continuing the undertaking business at the 'ARossford Funeral Home, Helen Finch and Norma Charles are dancing in Flo Ziegfeld's Follies. Ralph Mericle is Art Editor of the College Humor magazine. Erma Kazmaier went to California, as governess of Joe Brown's children. We wonder if her going to California has anything to do with Thomas' presence there. Harry Sterling is author of popular novels. Garnet Friess is his secretary. Margaret Tinney is private secretary to the Governor of Ohio, Robert Degner is continuing his father's business, as a contractor. We find Ethel Cupp and Irene Cuoeckerman among the faculty at Perrysburg High School. Ben Turner is the swimming instructor at the Y. M. C. A. building in New York City. . Around his mainstays, Inman, Boetsch, Zieman, Thornton and Nlericle he built his team. We wish to thank you Mr. Bach- man for your work and hope you will be with us next year. DOC CANFIELD: Assistant CoachfDoc was always there when we needed him. He coached the second team and through hard work shaped the new timber into a fairly good team. We thank you Doc and hope you do the same next year. MR. TREECE: Faculty Manager-This man is the main cog in P. H. S. ath- letics. Due to his cheerful disposition, his keen interest and his everlasting willingness, every fellow on the team tries to do his best. CAPTAIN INMAN: Fullback--Jim end- ed his football career with a bang. He played fullback and proved his worth at this position in the Maumee game. So long, Jim. FRED BOETSCH-Ducky played guard and was great on the defense. He was a big man and his opponents soon discov- ered this fact. Too bad, Ducky, you are leaving us. Sixty 'OM MQMQ VJALTER ZIEMAN: Endfeewe can nev- er do justice to this man. Walt played end, and halfback this year, and was outstanding in both positions. He showed this in the Whitmer game. So long Walt! RALPH MERICLE: Halfbacleeliveii though Merry did fall asleep in the study hall once in awhile, he certainly didn't sleep on the field. Merry was small but mighty, to his opponents. He's a Senior so we have to say good- bye. NORVAL COIL: Guard-Coil was a new member of the squad this year. He started poorly but soon showed us he could fight. Sorry you can't stay next year, but graduation will take you. BEN THORNTON: Tackle-Another Senior whose place will be hard to fill next fall. A fighting tackle with that never say die spirit, When Ben tackled they stopped and stayed stopped. Sorry you can't be with the team next year, Ben. PRED SCPIWIND: End-Fred could fight and he surely proved it. If every player fought as he did, the opposing teams would have been completely out- played. Next year he will make them take notice. Sixty-One Llp l 1 F gee? ,Nt LEONARD DEBBE: Tackle - Debbe was one of our little fellows on the line. He was surely a threat to the op- posing teams, and played best on the offense. Debbee's only a Junior, and we expect a lot from him next year. GERALD HIRSCH: Quarterback-Gerry was built close to the ground, but when he once started, he could run circles around his opponents. Gerry will be back next year and we can expect a great deal of excitement when he gets loose with the ball. HENRY KUTSCHKE: Center-Hank came here from Toledo and proved him- self a big help to the team. Although lightly built, he held his own against his opponents. Come on Hank, let's go next year. HORACE STEVENS: C9Hl'6F7HOf3C2 was always getting bumped on the nose. Although small, he was a fighter. Hor- ace will be with us next year and we expect a great deal. JAY 'lnWlNING: TackIefHere is a fel- low who could reach over their heads and get the ball. He was our best man for breaking up the other team's plays. We expect a lot from Jay next year at tackle. Sixty-Two L if R Us B U56 gf ' . PAUL DUQUETTE: HaIfbackfDuke got started on his left foot this season, but he soon improved. He played well in the backfield, for a new man, We hope to see some great playing from this fellow next year. MELVIN BROSSIA: GuardfRed was one of those red-headed fighters. He was slow in getting started, but when he did he was hard to stop. He has two more years to go. Let's go Red. WILLIAM SASS: GuardaBill was the big man on the line, and I think the opposing teams knew it. Bill will be L with us two more years, and so we still have a chance to see him play. DICK WELLSTEAD: EndfDick was a Freshman this year. He played end, and was always on the dot with Zieman. We will probably hear much from Dick ff' in the next three years. I ,ai BRUCE BODART: Fullback--Bruce was another Freshman on our team, but he proved he wasn't so green after all. He was injured the latter part of the year, but we hope to see him fighting for his 3 . school again next year. . H. S. He was strong on both offense and defense. His greatest accomplishment was in the Rossford game here when he succeeded in holding Peer, Rossford's star, scoreless and at the same time contributed several baskets to the Perrysburg score. He was a fighting captain and an outstanding leader in every game. His graduation this year will be a severe blow to P. H. S. athletics. GEORGE MCCOY-A'ScotIyn-Forward. The scrappiest little player we ever saw, with that never say die spirit. His big game was the Swanton game at Swanton. when he lead the scoring with 12 points, Scotty has another year to play. He was also outstanding in the Bowling Green and liucyrus games. Come on Scotty, we are with you. BEN TURNER- Benn-Forward. Ben teamed it at forward with lVlcCoy most of the season, playing guard part of the time. Ben seemed to go his best when the going was the toughest. His best games were the Rossford games along with Maumee and Delta games. He played not only a fine guard- ing and floor game but was also high scorer in several games. We sure will miss you a lot next year Ben. WIl.l.ARD ROBlSONA l3ud -Cenler. Bud is a natural born basketball player and with a little more confidence in himself he could go far in the game. A clean hard fighter who plays with an ease and grace that is beautiful to watch. Among his best games were the Rossford game here. the Na- poleon. llowling Green and Bucyrus games. In all of these he was outstanding and high point man. XX'e are expecting a lot from you next year Bud. FLORIS SWEET- Sweetiei'-Guard. And what a tsweetb little player he turned out to be. This was his first year out but he handled himself like a veteran. He was awfully green at first but he listened to the coach and learned fast. With two more years to go his prospects are bright indeed. l,et's go lilo? RICHARD XVlEl.LSTlfAD+ D1'chY' Richard was the only lireshie to make the grade this year. Awfully green yet, but a hard worker and a hard fighter. These two qualities are bound to make a player out of him. XVe are expecting big things of you during the next three years, Dick. Sixty-Five QMQMQQQM Wil? LU iii D, S E Basketball Review Perrysburg had a Very successful season this year winning eight out of the twelve games played.
