These are the memories we wish to lock in our hearts even as they are locked between the covers of this, our memory book. Q.. ln dedicating this issue of the Commodore to the remembrance of things past, let us first remember the Faculty who have guided us so capably through the years of our high school life. There is the memory of our principal, Mr. Douglass, who has shown invari- ably kind and sympathetic understanding of all our problems. There is the memory of our vice-principal, Mr. Sutherland, who with a patient but firm hand has kept us from straying alt the straight and narrow. There is the memory of Mr. Hoerger, our counselor, who has advised us wisely and well in our choice of courses and subiects. There is the memory of our class and home- room teachers, whose untiring efforts to make us wiser and better young people will never be forgotten. Last but not least, there is the memory of the friendships we have made and the fun we have had in our years at Perry. All these memories of things past we shall cherish for many years to come. - r... In the ninth grade many new students were added to our class. They came from Nativity, McNaugher, and the country schools. When we young Perryites reached Grade 9B, a great new door of social life opened to us-Milroy House and Bogi dances among others. There was a great deal of hard work mingled with lots of fun for us starry eyed freshmen. At last we had worked our way to the tenth grade. We were now part of the Senior School, and our Home Room representatives were sent to Senior Council. Because of the size of our class we had five rooms. Some of our boys were try- ing out for the teams and making them, while our girls were trying out for the maiorettes and cheerleading. We all had a sample of Dr. Irons' famed biology tests. Since this was the last year forthe country hicks , we had a sophomore pic- nic and gave them a real send off. ln the eleventh grade we were really in the swing of things! We were participating in more ofthe activities. Quite a few of our athletes had made the teams, and quite a few of our girls had become maiorettes and cheerleaders. Because Page Fourteen Ufflfffjld, 1. Wisner R. Miller D. McClelland M. Ritter of the absence of our country classmates, one of our home rooms was split up and four home rooms were established. We were all very proud ofthe Junior Home Room that won the Good Will Campaign. We were having trouble understand- ing valence in chemistry class, but we managed to survive through our Junior Year. At the end of the year we got together with our former classmates and had another picnic. As a Senior class, our group was divided into three homerooms. Dr. Irons, Miss Roberts, and Miss Traubert were our new homeroom teachers. Our class was active in many activities throughout the school. We were active in vari- ous clubs, student government, and the school publications. Besides the various activities already mentioned, one of our homerooms was the second in the school to have one hundred per- cent purchase of activity tickets, and two of our homerooms had one hundred per cent in contri- butions to the Community Chest Drive. We have enioyed our years at Perry and have learned much. We shall not soon forget that knowledge. As a class and as individuals we shall truly make every effort to use our knowledge for service. We made an attempt to find our classes, and, after a few unsuccessful tries, most of us did. We soon became acquainted with the school and the upperclassmen. For the next two years we were to have l'l0 as our homeroom with Miss Blayney as our teacher. By the time we reached eighth grade, we knew Perry inside and out. We started to at- tend such activities os the football and basket- ball games. We really began to get into the swing of things when one of our own classmates became President of the Junior School. We looked forward to becoming freshmen. After being ioined by students from McNau- gher, our freshman class really expanded. As freshies many new activities and studies were open to us. We were divided into two home- rooms now. We began to feel as though we were an active part of Perry and were filled with enthusiasm for our future years here. When our class reached the tenth grade, we were beginning to take more interest in some of Page Thirty-six Ufjiceu, Front: R. Swedish, M. Siefert Back Row: L. Dollhopf, L. Sibbet the school activities. Many of our boys made the football team, and we were glad to see several of our girls trying out for maiorettes and cheer- leaders. As sophomores we discovered many new activities which soon became a part of our lives at Perry. Our junior year brought many new thrills to us. Some of us were accepted into the National Honor Society, and others received Key Awards and placements in the Scholastic Contest for their outstanding achievements in Arts and Crafts. We all cheered the Commodores on to victory with much enthusiasm as most of our boys were now football players. One was on the swimming team, too. In all the excitement, our senior pic- tures arrived. Time was really flying! At last our Class Rings were ordered, and we were bus- ily making plans for our final and most impor- tant year at Perry. To our many friends in lower grades we express our thanks for the wonderful times we shared. We also wish to thank our homeroom teachers for the guidance and friendship they have extended to us. As we leave Perry, we should like to wish each and every Perryite all the luck and success such as we ourselves have had at our Alma Mater. We hope they will continue to keep Perry the school it has been in the past. 306 First Row: A. Ofchinick, C, Kin- sella, M. Cook, V. Hess, M. Sie- fert, A. Peiffer, C. Wigley, C. Daiss. Our home room teachers-Miss England, Miss Blayney, Miss Martin, Mr. Buker, and Mr. Smith-have given us wise counsel through the years. In the future when we look back on our high school days we will remember the fun and hard work which we experienced at Perry. Next year will be our Senior Year. We will try to make it a good one. The staFf issues a paper about ten times a year. .Srmiehp Since only a certain percentage of each class is admitted into mem- bership of the National Honor Society, it is a great privilege to be a part of this organization. To be eligible for National Honor, one must rank in the upper third of his class. He must also have outstanding character and ability as a leader and must have given a certain amount of service. Mem- bers of the faculty nominate and elect students for the society. Present members and those classmates who are on the honor roll do the final voting. The Commodores also took possession of third place in Section Il of the City League. In the first game of the season, visiting Perry was crumbled by the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils by a score of 69-0. The Mounties themselves ended this season as runner-up to Aliquippa in the A. A. class of the W. P. l. A. L. Thus the Commodores' loss was to a squad having both depth and strength. In the next exhibition encounter, the home eleven digested another white-washing as Beaver Falls drove for thirty-two points in mud and rain. Playing as host, the Commodores finally came into their own class as they tied North Allegheny. The Gordon offensive guns still remained silent for it took the effort of Captain Alan Walker, defensive tackle, to drop on a fumble to score six points late in the contest. Don LaScola kicked the extra point which had locked the score at a 7-7 mark. Entering league competition with a one tie, two loss slate, the Perrymen finally drew blood as they skimmed past the Langley Mustangs in a close 7-6 battle. Our alma mater's score came on a forty yard pass from signal-caller Skip Marxen to end Dennis Cummings. Rain and Oliver's fine passing attacked and dampened Perry's city title hopes as the Hillmen were laced 'I4-0. The Gordonmen made easy pickings of Fifth Avenue as they pushed across three touchdowns. With Marxen scoring twice and Don LaScola lugging the pigskin for another, the Blue and White won their second game of the season. Carrick's Raiders showed their league cham- pionship form as they ran rough-shod through Per- ry's defensive wall, scoring an expected 32-7 vic- tory. Perry's lone score was made on a short pass from halfback Bill Jones to Skip Marxen. In order to hold firm grip to the third place bracket in league standings the Commodores would have to tie or defeat Allegheny's Indians in the final game. And tie they did as the Perrymen scored fourteen points after the intermission, thus holding the Indians to an even 'I4-'I4 contest. The Blue and White's scoring surge was sparked. by the plunging abilities of Bill Jones and fullback Wray Lang. With this tie Allegheny's gridiron hopes were held in check. Many Perry spectators will remember the T955 football squad as a team that came through to pre- sent its rooters with a favorable season although it was tagged as inexperienced. The squad was also considered green but soon overcame this title and humbled Allegheny, Fifth Avenue, and Langley with aggressive gridiron maneuvers. 'I' i i 'k Honors came to Harry Skip Marxen as he was named Most Valuable Player of the 55 squad. jim. 7955 Jzwf1:alL Jmm, Wray lang Fullback Bill Jones Don l.aScola Halfback Halfback Skip Marxen Quarterback Richard Lerach Leroy Simmons Tom Timney Charles Lee End Tackle Guard Center Ron Todd Allan Walker Dennis Cummings Guard Tackle End Page Seventy-six Roster: Frank Hayden .loe Barrow Elmer Waldschmidt Rudy Swedish Thomas Lippert Ronald Hay Donald Monti Keith McMonigal Dave Riedel Curtis Rock Joseph Cacolice Byron McMonigaI Woody Parker James Waldorf Mike S Larry Meals Gary Moffat Thomas Bagley Ray Ostronic Bradford Collins Thomas Antill Stanley Niecgorski Chester Lombardi Albert Bracalielly Ronald Stoof Joseph Kirin Larry Opperman Lou Ligouri Ralph Miller changler A6'aalmfbalL Galda, K. Fraser The Blue and White basketball squad found only defeat as it could salvage but one win while dropping 'I6 contests. Perry's quintet was beaten by on aver- age of 32 points each game at the hands of the opponent. Season's scoring totals showed that the Commodores dunked a meager 651 points, while all oppo- sition hooped for l,074 tallies. Home team weakness was evidenced in a scrap with South Hills, as the Hill- toppers set a city league scoring mark, drubbing the Gordonmen llO-67. For its lone victory Perry visited and defeated Allegheny Vocational by a 55-45 score. High scorer for the Commodores was Dennis Cummings with 16 points, while Bill Jones netted TO. Although the Commodores were tied for the last place position with Allegheny Vocational at the season's end, it was evident that no other team in the circuit could hamper the Oliver Bears' quest for the sectional championship as the Orange and Brown ran a 12 win, no loss slote. At the close of this season Perry will lose only three players to graduation. They are forwards, Bob Garland and Skip Marxen, and guard, Jack Galda. As the thinclads of the 1955 season ran forthe last time in the twenty- seventh annual Pittsburgh high school cross-country run at Flag Stat? Hill, they looked back on a season which could quote only one win. In their first three meets the Perry Pathfinders were trampled by the score of 20-35 to a visiting Penn team, by 'I9-36 at the hands of Latrobe, and by 26-29 in a close battle of stamina to Brentwood. Victory was had as the Smithmen trudged to a one point win over the pathers from Allderdice by o 27-28 score. Perry's placement grabbers for the meet were co-captains Bob Hrisak and Tom Madey, in second and third places respectively, and Bill Pittman who took fourth place. As the season ended, a vote was taken and Larry Clark was elected to receive the sportsmanship award, and Bob Hrisak was made captain of the 1956 squad. In post season meets, the Commodores placed fourth in the City Cham- pionship Meet as they were led by Tom Madey, who capped seventh place. This made it possible fcr him to compete against other victorious runners in the State Championship Meet at Pennsylvania State College. In the State University Meet Tom placed in the first seventy-five, thus keeping the name of Perry in good stead at the meet. Those that received cross-country letters were: Bcb Hrisak, Tom Madey, Bill Pittman, Doug Ingram, Larry Woelfel, Chuck Bissontz, Herb Rinehart, Paul Kloes, Jim Richardson, Larry Clark, Rich Rouch, and Ron Buschek. The 1955-1956 swimming squad, composed mostly of sophomores and iuniors, splashed to three victories. lt was defeated in eight dual meets. Although the schedule records defeats, the season was an unusual one, for the Smithmen found themselves with stiit competition in the city league, while the W. P. I. A. L. swimmers oFfered little competition. ln the season opener the Commodores drowned Vandergrift 51-25. Free sfylers, Meals and Kulwicki, back stroker Brown, and the diving talents of Hub- bard enabled the home trunkmen to grab first place position. The winning start was quickly ended as the tank-men found it a rocky road forthe remainder ofthe season. Butler visited and was victorious with a close 41-36 score, while a visiting Westinghouse team in the next meet met a 57-20 defeat at the hands of the Perrymen. The Commodores visited Peabody and were crushed 56-21 but re- bounded and nipped Vandergrift for the second time with a 39-38 showing. The final six meets read defeat for the home swimmers as they bowed 62-15 to South Hills, 63-14 to the Brown and Orange of Oliver, 40-37 to Allegheny's ln- dians, 45-32 to Linsley Academy, 46-31 to Langley, and to Carrick for a 42-35 loss.
