We, the ciass ot 1955, have chosen tor our theme, Town and Countryf' it is appropriately chosen since, for the first time, the city and country students have come up from the ninth grade as a hody. During this time we have learned the meaning and vaiue ot teamworic. Never has there been any serious threat to the unity between the two groups. The iaheis Hhicku and usiicicern have iost their old sting and are now used only in triendiy jokes. The strong bonds ot friendship have iiniced the two elements with a firm hold that wiii not be easiiy hroicen. Many ot these friendships formed between the town and country will last inor- ever. it is on these ciose terms that we step over the threshold of our high school years into the roadway of iiie i- he it paved or muddy. On the toiiowing pages we shaii attempt to unfold cieariy and accurately .-1 This , , , , Qur Story. 74414 af 0444144444 624444414 561446444 6444444 rqalliailliai Sperm PQDLCL444 r , bg, .-5 ' s, V 1 1 . ar gs. We twenty little Chamthamites who came trooping to Perry that cold day in February, 1947 found quite a difference from what we were used to. Mrs. Russell became our first report teacher, and through her guidance we got our high school career off to a .good start. 8th Grade Aw Mrs. Russell, not more math cards? Slowly but surely our class was growing. We were taking an active part in Perry's activities now, and did we yell at those football games! 9th Grade But if its a dead language, why bother? Freshmen at last! New friends joined us from McNaugher and Clayton. We now chose our own subjects and were at long last permitted to join Milroy. Due to our size, we had to be divided into two home rooms. Half of us went to 203 and the other half to 319. 10th Grade He was kidding about a week of tests, wasn't he? On the move again. This time the Chem. Lab. and 311 became our domain. What fun we had this year! The fellows went out for the team, and the girls tried out for majorettes and cheerleaders. Our class was dwindling in size but not in spirit. We came through biology with flying colors - well, anyway we came through. 11th Grade If only Macbeth had died at the beginning of the play- The civil war raged again. The Yankees from 311 and the Johnnie Rebs from 106 brought it back to life, all in fun of course. When football came around this year, our class was well represented on the team. The same was true of basketball and swimming. Chemistry class was always full of surprises. This year we got ou-r taste of 1000 word themes, Shakespeare, and hydrogen sulfide. 12th Grade Honest Miss Lyons, I gave you the absentee slip. For the first time since 8th grade our class was all together. Twentyfnine under the guidance of Miss Lyons, started off on the last year of high school. The Senior Play Growing Pains came and went. Five from our class participated. Every' one waited impatiently for the prom, then suddenly that, too, was over- But Edgewood Country Club and Tommy Carlyn's music remain in our memories. The semester changed. Stewart Sell became president of the school and jim Grivas, president of the class. Pictures were exchanged with the usual ohs and ahs . Class day preparations began with great care and secrecy. All too soon we found our' selves in the midst of commencement arrangements, and everyone in the class had the same question on his mind, Why does time fly so fast? x. . r 4, . , . , 'I . S. next fall the class of '53 will be among the missing. We leave Perry a little sad at heart and will always look back with fond memories We are justly proud of our record and point with pride to a few of our achievements. But first take note of our capable sponsors, Miss Anna Traubert and Mr. Chester Ironsg and next, our class officers, who were elected by this class after deep thought and consideration. The president is Dale Claving vicefpresident, Warne White, secretary, Madeline Azzarellog and treasf urer, Bernice Baynes. Among the outstanding people in our class are Ted Rohm, who has been president of the Biology Club for the past four semesters, Carole Colebob, who is editor of the Perryscopeg Don Mc' Bride, who is editor of the Yearbook, and Charlie Heard, who has been the pianist for the Orchestra, A Capella Choir, and most of the groups who needed an accompanist. Although there are others to fill the places of the '53 graduates, sports at Perry will suffer a heavy loss. Wziriie White broke the swimming record in the 200 yard freestyle. The time, which was formerly 2.12, is now 2.10. Don Wocndrtuw added to the glory of Perry by finishing third in SCHOOL OFFICERS Dave Norris - Activities Mgr. Nancy Etzel - Secretary Bill Wylarid - President Ray Priest - Vice-President the City Cross Country finals and setting a Perry record by coming in eighteenth at Pcnn State. Music makers are in our midst, too. Rememf ber the Sentimentalists, and their . . . rhythm? Ted Rohm, Bill Kay, Charlie Heard, Gits Sell, and Aubrey Hall '55 made up their band and played at the Perry Fair, Milroy, and Bogi dances. Ever have your name on the bulletin board re- minding you that you had thoughtlessly dropped waste paper on the floor or had broken some other school rule? That was the work of Charlie Chan's Crew organized in '53 by the members of Senior Council so that we would have a better and cleaner school. Another achievement in '53 was the change in the point system. Now the cheerleaders get 15 points, the members of the Cafeteria Committee get 10 points, and the girls who work in the office get 15 points. The first members of the class were brought together as one body. Although we had no inkling of what was to come, we struggled along reaping a harvest of knowledge for future use. As we look back on it, it seems to be a memorable year indeed. 8th Grade With a year at Perry under our belts, we strode confidently into the 8th grade to continue with our advancement up the long ladder. We were beginning to hit our stride, because we were able to join clubs. 9th Grade Our class was really beginning to take shape then. The country contingent joined our ranks and tripled the size of our class. The regular students from the neighboring grade schools came to Perry as usual. We were all excited over the choice of subjects offered us. Many of the boys participated in sports. We were very proud of Warne White, who was one of the first of our class to earn his letter. We elected Dale Glavin as president of the junior school and Sally Williams vicefpresident. The great change in the way of our school life certainly impressed us, and we were very proud of ourselves. 10th Grade When we reached the 10th grade, we were really in the swing of things. Our responsibilities were increased fso was our homeworkj, and the class was in more activities. This was the year when we experienced an unexpectedly long Thanksgiving vacation. The big snow did all that. 1 1th Grade It didn't seem possible, but we got our rings. We were really wheels then with our beautiful, shining rings. Some .people got the idea that there was only one more year until we graduated. Our boys were making a great name for themselves in athletics. The home room in room 2 was moved to 206. We were saddened by the loss of our friend and classmate, Marlene Maier. 12th Grade Well, we iinally made it. There was much talk of which college to attend and what to do after school. Mr. Hoerger's office was virtually beseiged. We broke tradition by ordering our graduation gowns from a new company. The ohs and ahs were the direct result of the individual yearbook pictures. These caused quite a stir with various reactions. About the middle of the year we bade our elderly 12A friends a fond farewell, we were then top dog in the school. Then in quick succession came Baccalaureate, graduation, and the Prom at the Schenley Hotel. Now we leave Perry, perhaps a little sad, but really eager to take the next step up the long ladder. They finished with a lone victory and a tie while dropping six. The first game found Perry meeting the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils at the 1atter's Held. The game found neither team able to penetrate the scoring zone as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The Commodores took on Beaver Falls for the next exhibition game. The Bea'vers outfweighed the Commodores and pushed them all over the field, win' ning by a 34 to 7 score. ' Perry closed out their exhibition section schedule as they were rolled over by the prexies of Washington, by the score of 3343. Bill Wyland and jim Waldron pushed across Perry's two scores, as Mark Suto converted one extra point. For their next game, Perry traveled to Brentwood Stadium to meet the Carrick Raiders. This game was one of the best games of the City League season but Carrick finally took it. The Allegheny Red Devils trounced the injuryfriddled Commodores 36f0. Perry 'finally claimed their iirst victory as they defeated the Langley Mustangs, 14f0. Bert Patterson ran 70 yards for the one score, and Dick Slukich plunged for the other. Bert Patterson converted both extra points, giving Perry her only victory of the season. The Oliver Bears furnished the opposition as Perry closed out the season. An intercepted pass deep in Perry territory late in the game gave Oliver their mar' gin of victory, 7 points. Honors came to Perry as Bob Darkey was named Most Valauable Player of the SS squad. Bert Patterson repeated his being named to the AllfCity Team at end. Lost to graduation are ends: Patterson, Arent, and Rozanskig Tackles: Klenke, Kagle, and Stierheimg Guards: Slukich, Meldon, and Sellg and Center, Hite. The losses in backield men are also numerous and include Darkey, Wyland, Hagmaier, Salomon, and Stevens. The list is long, but the returning boys will form the basis of a good team for next year, Although they were plagued by many injuries, the Gridders represented Perry with their great spi-rit which brought them through the season. 646144 Qc-why . In '52 the squad had eleven regular runners, with four of last year's lettermen returning. The roster read: Don Woodrow as captain, Jim Smith, Dave Norris, Bill Ritter, John Hrisak, George McClone, Juri Niiler, jim Gilbert, George Payne, Chuck Fitzgerald, and John Lawless. Tom Madey handled the managerial tasks very efficiently. John Hrisak was chosen captain for 1953. Don Woodrow was elected most valuable runner. During the regular season the Harriers won their meets with Penn Town' ship 09662, Langley f25f3OQg Oliver 119661, Shadyside f15f40D, and Brentwood f19f36Q. The squad lost two meets, Wilkinsburg 137481 and Latrobe f36f19j. Just in case you're wondering, the low score wins in a crossfcountry meet. In postfseason meets, Perry placed second to Langley in the City Cham' pionship meet. At this meet Don Woodrow took 3rd place, Jim Smith, 6th, Davve Norris, 13th, Jim Gilbert, 15th, John Hrisak, 18thg and Bill Ritter, 21st. Taking second place in this meet made it possible for the first six Perry men to go to the State Championship meet at Pennsylvania State College. Out of the Efteen teams entered at state, Perry ranked 11th, 52 points ahead of Langley in 13th place. The score was Perry 290-Langley 342. Perry placed Don Woodrow 18th, the highest any Perry runner has ever placed at State College, Jim Smith, 52nd, Dave Norris, 71st, Bill Ritter, 75th, and john Hrisak, 81st. As you can see, this is a record to be proud of and one which we all hope can be equaled or even bettered next season. Hmmm!! . Group: Top: D. Tunslall, Managerg D. Zunicg R. McKeeverg T. In league competition, Perry's Hoopsters won 5' while dropping 7, as they finished in fifth place. The Commodores scored 717 points for the sea' son with a one game high of 62 scored over the Allegheny Vocational five on the home court. Individual scoring honors went to Dick Comport, who hooped 122 points for the season. Dick Slukich also hit over the century mark with 102 ipoints. Bob Darkey, a midsemester graduate, hit for 89. Other scores worth noting were Wy' land, 64, Salomon, 64, Waldron, 633 and Garland, 57. Perry cage fans had to wait till the final game of the season for their great' est thrill. Perry defeated the Langley Mustangs, the section champs, 47f41, in one of the most thrilling games ever witnessed in Perry's gym. Perry's other victories were claimed over Connelly in exhibition, twice over the Oliver Bears, and over the Allegheny Vo's in league play. At the close of this season, Perry loses 7 boys to graduation. They are Bob Darkey, Bob Kagle, Bert Patterson, Bill Wyland, Ron Salomon, Dick Comport, and Dick Slukich. Although the losses are great, Perry hopes next year to improve this season's record. Swimming . L. to R. Front - C. Fitzgeraldg E. Adamsg S. Sellg T. Wiegmang N. Wagman Rear - B. Rogang A. SWIMMING This year's tank men kept up Perry's amazing record of outstanding swim' ming teams over the years by losing only two out of seven meets. Under the leaderf ship of captains Stewart Sell and Warne White the team started rolling in high gear by defeating Butler in our first duel meet 50-25. The highlights of this meet were lst and 2nd place in the 40fyard freestyle event by Wiegman and Wagman respec- tively, lst and 2nd by White and Woodrow in the 200 yard freestyle event, and Sell's lst place in the 100 yard freestyle. Adams in the 100 yard breast stroke and Simons in the 100 yard back stroke placed Brst in their events. On to Langley with high spirits the team brought home another victory '58f17. Norris and Skillen, placing first and second in the diving, and ,freestyle re' lay helped boost the score to one of the highest of the season. South Hills was the next team to fall before the Commodores by a score of 45450. The trunkmen then went to Connelly and won by a score of 59f16 with Perry placing lst and 2nd in all events but the diving and individual medley relay. After winning over Carrick with a score of 6Of14, the team was brought back down to earth when defeated at the hands of Allegheny 47f28. Some tough breaks caused Perry to lose this meet, but all hopes weren't lost, if we could beat Oliver there would be a threefway tie for the section II championship. The team knew this to be the hardest meet of the season and they were all out to win despite the loss of Gits Sell who graduated in january. It was a close meet all the way with neither team ahead by more than two points until the individual medley relay when Oliver placed lst and 3rd to go into the lead by a score ozf 34-29. By taking both the medley and the freestyle relay we would have had this meet. As it turned out, Oliver's medley was too strong for Jeffries, Adams, and White, and in spite of the freestyle relay win, the score was recorded 3966 favoring Oliver. Although this ended the dual meets there still was the city qualifying meet. Perry copped seven places at this meet with Wagman qualifying in the 50 yard freestyle, White in the 200 yard freestyle, Wiegman in the 100 yard freestyle, and Simons in the 150 yard individual medley. Both the medley relay consisting of Jeffries, Adams, and McBride and the freestyle relay with Weigman, Wagman, White, and Woodrow qualified for city also. At the City meet White, Wiegman, and Simons qualiied for the regional meets to be held at Slippery Rock. f4aZaqaa71A 4 VFVV PFI' rg N I ,4 J git N2 S I 7 I Q V if will Abbinantis Market, Melrose Ave. H.
