Arthur W. Eshelman, Principal T 0 I I Principal s Message To the Class of 1960: Someone said - Youth is the time of fragrant blossoms and blue skies and laughing waters. Seniors, the world is yours if you are prepared and ready to work. Up to now you have been apprentices in the great fraternity of the adult world. You have been placed on approval -- learning the lessons and disciplines and performing the tasks that fell to your lot. From now on you are full members. Some of you may feel that this membership has been forced upon you, that you are asked to participate in a program with which you are out of sympathy. Under- standing such honest reluctance, we, the rest of the democratic family, say this to you - - we must all work together, whatever may be our individual differences and philosophies. This is a time when we must show a united front. In the future world peace will be as challenging as war has ever been. That is where you come in. Soon you will be the older generation and your children will undoubtedly be asking you all the questions you have been firing at us. Yours is the task of building a better world. Yours is a great responsibility and challenge. Weigh it well. This is not a hopeless world. Education, faith in God and country, character and decent living are still powers for good in our land and in the world. Remember this - great democracies depend on trained devoted youth. You have the power and the will to fill the need. This is your opportunity to serve. Look into the future with a spirit of high adventure - with all the wisdom and creative spirit which you can muster and summon the courage that comes from having a great faith in the future - and you cannot fail. I congratulate you and give you my best wishes. Have faith in God, in yourself and in the future. ARTHUR W. ESHELMAN Principal. 8

Harry V. Pownall, Assistant Principal Assistant PrincipoI's Message WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE? It is important in our lives that we continually concern our- selves with purposes. We must constantly keep in mind that behind every action, whether instinctive or contemplative, there is always a definite purpose. It is also of utmost importance to take time to study and analyze the underlying motives or purposes behind all actions, including our own as well as those of the other person. Upon hearing a comment concerning a friend or acquaintance, whether favorable or unfavorable, do you ask yourself, just what prompted such a statement? Was it to help or hinder? The real purpose of any statement is its consequence. Why not quietly search for the motives that prompt all actions or comments? Every premeditated action, at its root, has a good or bad motive, so before taking action on any important matter, try to determine the fundamental purpose - where you are going, why you are headed in that direction and what you expect to achieve when you have reached your goal. Most important of all would be this questionz- What is my major purpose in life and why do I do the things I do? HARRY V. POWNALL Assistant Principal. 9
