Committee of Forty was organized to host dances and other school ser- vices. The first Committee of Forty had forty members but it has been reduced to thirty-two, eight repre- sentatives from each class. In 1940 a Sight Conservation Class and Orthopedic room were added. Distributive Education and Office Occupations were also established in this year. It was also during this time period that Peoria High School was starting to be called Central by the press. Twice again in Peoria High School's history the overcrowded condition became so intense that split sessions were held. This hap- pened in 1932 and in 1969. Iuniors and seniors attended classes from 8:00 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. while freshmen and sophomores attended classes from 9:00 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. After World War II Peoria High School remodeled the former OPIN- ION building into a social center for the students. The building was called The Rec and was torn down in the 1960's to make room for I-74. The extent of education in Peoria was furthered in 1961 when the Sci- ence Wing and Spectator Gymna- sium were added. In 1980 a new all- weather track and field was added. In Peoria High's 125 years of exist- ence it is clear that many great minds have been produced. It can only be hoped that the next 125 years will be as productive.
