Committee of Forty was organized to host dances and other school ser- vices. The first Committee of Forty had forty members but it has been reduced to thirty-two, eight repre- sentatives from each class. In 1940 a Sight Conservation Class and Orthopedic room were added. Distributive Education and Office Occupations were also established in this year. It was also during this time period that Peoria High School was starting to be called Central by the press. Twice again in Peoria High School's history the overcrowded condition became so intense that split sessions were held. This hap- pened in 1932 and in 1969. Iuniors and seniors attended classes from 8:00 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. while freshmen and sophomores attended classes from 9:00 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. After World War II Peoria High School remodeled the former OPIN- ION building into a social center for the students. The building was called The Rec and was torn down in the 1960's to make room for I-74. The extent of education in Peoria was furthered in 1961 when the Sci- ence Wing and Spectator Gymna- sium were added. In 1980 a new all- weather track and field was added. In Peoria High's 125 years of exist- ence it is clear that many great minds have been produced. It can only be hoped that the next 125 years will be as productive. The Peorian was the first year- book of Peoria High and its first edi- tion was issued in 1902. At this time there was no separate yearbook staff so the yearbook was produced by the newspaper staff. In 1924 the yearbook was renamed the Crest and given a staff of its own. Overcrowded conditions arose again and in 1912 land on North Street was purchased. Plans were laid approximating the cost of the building to be S400,000. In Septem- ber of 1916, the present Peoria High School opened to 700 students. In 1924 eighteen instrumentalists formed the first Peoria High School Band. In the same year the first P.H.S. students were initiated into the National Honor Society. The year 1925 brought with it a new form of Student Council having the elected student president assum- ing leadership of the entire student body. Peoria High School's Student Council has always been an asset to the school. In 1947 Student Council inaugurated the first annual Home- coming Week, complete with stunt shows, dance, queen and attendants, bonfire and football game. It was also in this year that the team nick- name was changed from the Maroons to the Lions. The nick- name Lions was chosen by the stu- dent body in an election. Student Council was also instrumental in l .. if N.. naming the lower athletic field Herke Field honoring Salen Doc Herke, athletic coach of P.H.S. for many years. In 1942 a Student Court was estab- lished and a student's peers would judge him for his wrongdoings. If charged with smoking, the punish- ment was to bring a sealed pack of cigarettes to send to the men in the service. In one case seven boys were charged with popping sacks in the cafeteria. Six were found guilty and sentenced to each bring twelve tin cans for the scrap drive. The seventh was found not guilty. One of the six was held in contempt of court. History 19
