Literature Study Teaches Writing ualities Four years of English enabled stu- dents to speak and write correctly. They learned the backgrounds of authors and great works of litera- ture. Freshmen focused their atten- tions on grammar and reading se- lections such as Dickens' Great Expectations. Sophomores wrote themes and book reports and re- viewed grammar rules. Iuniors studied American authors' lives and Works, including poetry, short stories, and novels. Their studies also involved writing trends in the growth of American literature. The works of English authors Were read by seniors. They Wrote research pa- pers and did memory work. Students from all tour classes contributed pos- ters, paintings, sculptures, and draw- ings pertaining to their studies to their English classrooms. Students stream into the library every period for a quiet hour of study and research.

....,,,s.-.I Latin students discover that there can be fun in learning a foreign language as they play Latin bingo. tudents Learn Foreign Languages and Customs Peoria High offered courses in Latin, French, German, and Spanish. First year students gained a basic vocabulary and learned to construct sentences. Short stories were transf lated by second year students. Third and fourth year classes continued studying the Works and lives of great foreign authors. Some students Wrote research papers, read novels, or pre- pared projects on Works of literature studied in the classroom. Tapes in- creased students' speaking abilities. At all levels of language classes, emphasis was placed on reading skills and an increasing vocabulary. Becky Huyck looks over German projects made by former stu- dents as she plans one of her own. Der Weihnachtsmann spreads joy and distributes presents at the German Club Christmas party.
