Literature Study Teaches Writing ualities Four years of English enabled stu- dents to speak and write correctly. They learned the backgrounds of authors and great works of litera- ture. Freshmen focused their atten- tions on grammar and reading se- lections such as Dickens' Great Expectations. Sophomores wrote themes and book reports and re- viewed grammar rules. Iuniors studied American authors' lives and Works, including poetry, short stories, and novels. Their studies also involved writing trends in the growth of American literature. The works of English authors Were read by seniors. They Wrote research pa- pers and did memory work. Students from all tour classes contributed pos- ters, paintings, sculptures, and draw- ings pertaining to their studies to their English classrooms. Students stream into the library every period for a quiet hour of study and research.
