English Department Grammar, theme Writing, discuss- ing recent books, and doing research papers played an important part in rounding out the English back- ground. Freshmen diagrammed and wrote themes. Sophomores did out- side reading and studied Iulius Cae- sar. Iuniors spent much of their time studying the American founda- tion to literature and history While seniors advanced in learning about English literature, poetry, and more about Shakespeare.
