The schedule was one of the toughest ever played by a maroon eleven. Throughout the season the Lions were headed by a very capable mound staff. This included: John Schefelbein and Bob Jones, graduating seniors; Jack Pyle, a junior; and Sarge Walter and George Suess, sophomore moundsters. In the infield it was Bill Weeks at third, Bill Suffield and Don McWilliams, shortstops and senior Dick Eagleton at second. Sarge Walter filled in at first, while Corky Robertson directed all activity behind the plate. Mainstays at the outfield posts during the season were Bob Kehl, Chuck Eyster, and Jim Fox. It was the efforts of these boys that produced such a fine season record. After winning five games in a row, the I.ions dropped the second game of a double header, our inter-city tilt with Spalding, 7 to 5. In the second double header against Decatur, Bob Jones pitched a shutout in the first game, 5 to 0, and came into the second game to pitch a relief role, gaining credit for another win--a nine inning ballgame, 8 to 7. J.osing a second game to I.a Salle-Peru, the J.ions showed their strength by downing Champaign in a twin-bill 12 to 3 and 10 to 3. The Lions then dropped an inter-city game to Manual, but George Suess came back to win a greater Peoria game against Hast Peoria 10 to 1. After playing to a 2 to 2 tie with Woodruff, the Maroons gained a 6 to 0 nod with Suess pitching a one hitter. To end the season the Maroons took a southern trip on which they dropped two ballgames. The first game was against a tough Belleville outfit which was lost 7 to 2, and in the second tilt, the Lions dropped a hard-fought game to Edwardsville 2 to 1. In the district tournment Central bowed to Canton |] to 0 in a 10 inning game. The outlook for 1949 is bright with several returning letter- man, capable of carrying the team to a better season.
