NOPPENBERGER Head Coach This year Peoria High can point with pride to the results of the effective supervision and direc- tion of our coaching staff. Central has achieved much in every sport, for, with the exception of football, we have been represented in the state tournament, and in each we have made credit- able showings. It is obvious that these achieve- ments could not have been possible without the untiring efforts of Mr. Noppenberger. Mr. Myers, and Mr. Reesman. i JOSEPH E. MYERS Assistant Coach amz. HAROLD E. L., Nevitt, P., Blane, B., Weik, D., Robertson, J- This year's Maroon gridiron aggregation was seen featuring a new type of strictly offensive football. The fact that they finished the season holding a .500 average, with five wins, and five losses, proved that it wasn't too disastrous. Highlighting this brand of football were our scat-backs Bill Blackwell, Bob Schmidt, Jim Robertson, and Bob Zicaro. The linemen who cleared the path for these speedsters were Bob Kronke, Lee Hinnen, Bob Blane, Jim Arehart, Gene Koch, Jack Bond, John Merrill, Frank joos, Bob Bong, and Henry Cook. The injuries of' Bud Baxter and Jack Bond and the loss of our captain Bob Zicaro to the Navy showed a decided effect in our mid-season games. However, the service of quarterback Dick Weik, with his brilliant signal calling and punting, helped us earn a second place rating in the Greater Peoria standings. The prospects for next year are bright. Eight members of this year's starting lineup and the majority of substitutes will be returning next year, while only Dick Weik, Bob Kronke, and Bob Blane will be leaving the squad. Their size, experience, and power proved too much for the green Central squad. However, the Maroons managed to cross their goal twice and the game ended 25-13. The tables were turned, however, in the next game against Chillicothe when the Grey Ghosts failed to organize any resistance against our speedsters. We rolled up 38 points to the Chilli boys' 6. The next week Central got revenge for the 6-0 upset that Woodruff handed us last year. The Noppymen out- played the Warriors in all respects and walked off with a close 13-12 victory. Spalding's Irish showed us their ability to remain one of the unbeaten teams of the state. They battled their way to a one-sided 32-12 victory. The following week, we failed to snap out of the defeat column, against our old Big 12 Conference rival, Streator. The Bulldogs gave us our worst upset of the season with a 6-0 defeat. This was the only game all season that the Maroons hadn't scored at least 12 points. However, our next opponent, Springfield, caught us on the rebound and tasted a 14-12 loss. A pass interception in the last 44 seconds in the next game against the Pekin Chinks set up the touchdown that broke a 19-19 tie and gave the Chinks a 26-19 victory. The Maroons, however, made up for this loss the following week by handing East Peoria's Red Raiders a 20-7 setback. The Lincoln game was another thrillerq The Railsplitters' 21 point rally in the final period broke a 21-6 third quarter lead that the Maroons held. The game resulted in a 27-21 heartbreaker for Central. The Manual game proved quite successful for the Maroons. Central tied the game 6-6 at the halftime by scoring in the last minute of play, but finally won it with a touchdown pass from Jim Robertson to end, John Merrill, in the fourth quarter. In the post-season elections, Bob Kronke, our outstanding center and line-backer, was elected captain, while Bob Blane and Dick Weik were elected co-captains. Basketball at Peoria High this year had one of its most successful seasons in the past few years. Their record of 22 wins and 5 defeats will stand high among the records of Cen- tral's leading teams. It was the first year since 1936 that Peoria High was represented at the State Tournament among the Sweet Sixteen . The fact that they defeated their first opponent, Flora, by a score of 38-36 gave them the qualification of being one of the top eight teams in Illinois. In their regular season they lost four games to teams that they had either beaten earlier in the season or that they beat later in the season. After starting off the season with four straight victories, the Maroons were defeated in the fourth quarter of their fifth game by Woodruff, 40-21, in their first and worst defeat of the season. The following evening Chillicothe pulled an unpredictedxvictory from underneath us in their return game for our second straight defeat. The prospects for the team were none too bright at this stage of the season. They managed to pull out of their slump, however, and finished the season with only two more defeats out of their next fourteen games. In the Regional Tournament, the Maroons were con- fronted with Delavan, Morton, and Minier. Minier pressed them into a double-overtime before they finally won 47-44. Advancing to the Sectional Tournament, Central's first opponent was Easton who carried with them 33 victories and 1 defeat as a season record. The Maroons, however, came through in fine style with a driving fourth quarter which meant defeat for Easton. Bloomington was the next victim when Mr. Noppenbergefs fam- ous five walked away with a one-sided victory which carried them to Champaign among the Sweet Sixteen . Bloomington handed us our fourth defeat of the season in a closely contested game, 4-1. Central was again forced into defeat, this time by the hands of the Pekin Chinks. The Maroons, who had previously handed the Chinks a 13-0 defeat, fell 6-0. Central was again unable to put forth much resistance against Oak Park and took another double-header loss. They avenged it by taking a double-header victory from Galesburg. In the following week, the Maroons again defeated Galesburg, 9 to 6, to take the District Title. Pekin fell, 10-3 to give us the Sectional Championship and a little revenge to our 6-O defeat earlier in the season. In the State Tournament our diamond-dusters took a close defeat from Marshall High School of Chicago, 7-1. Those who earned the Varsity letter were: George Burdette, Captain, jim Robertson, Bruce Saurs, Tom Folkerts, Dave Burns, Dick Bogard, Fred Weeks, Jerry Faye, Don Page, Ken Schwab, joe Stowell, Bud Stone, and Dick Weik. Knot in picturej. Under the guidance of a new track coach, Joe Myers, the track crew turned out one of the best records in the history of P.H.S. Joe had an abundance of experience with which to work, and it was evident from the first meet on that the cindermen had a great deal of strength. They started the ball rolling against a powerful Kewanee team and, although they dropped the meet, they gave the Boiler-Makers quite a scare. Next they sprinted to a fourth place in the Geneseo Relays. Gaining momentum, they easily took in stride the three dual meets remaining on the schedule and went on to win the Delavan Track Carnival and the District Meet. Captain jack Heintzman cleared the bar at six foot to tie for second in high jump at the State Meet. Then, going at top speed, the fellows romped off with the Greater Peoria Championship. Still hungry for trophies, they ended a very successful season by winning the Big Twelve Meet, in which they were matched against the best teams in this section of the state. It is rather difficult to mention any standouts on such a team as this, of which every member deserves acknowledgment, but there are some who deserve an extra handshake. Probably the best individual season was enjoyed by Jack Heintzman who not only placed second in the state in high jump but also broke the all-time school record in broad jump. Others who should be especially recognized are Bill Bullet Blackwell and the fleet- footed Young brothers, Clin' and Aggie. Herb Allison and Wally O'Brien took honors in the mile run, while Bob Burkes, a three-letter-man in track, finished his Peoria Central cinder career in top shape. Bill Miller turned out some wonderful exhibitions of pole vaulting and also held his own in the relay. Since five lettermen are retLu'ning, among whom are Bob Baker, star hurdler, and Don Locher, weight tosser, the outlook for next spring is promising. The team was uncoached all season, but was under the watchful eye of Mr. Noppenberger. The team members were Alan Caplan, Jimmy Love, Frank Van Auken, Rollie Riegel, and Ray Keesecker. Jimmy Love and Frank Van Auken were the only underclassmeng Love being a Freshman, and Van Auken, a Sophomore. The team lost only one dual meet all season. That was to Manual by a close score of 71!2 to 41!2. They won both of their triangular meets against Champaign and Urbana, and Manual and VVoodruff with one-sided scores in each. Alan Caplan won some individual honors in becoming the medalist in the Big 12 Meet. He was closely pressed all season by Freshman Jimmy Love, who shot a sterling brand of golf for his age. Frank Van Auken and Rollie Riegel also won many points for Central through their steady shooting. Central Central Central Central Central Central ...... They had a fair season this year, losing to and winning from some tough competition. Forming the first four members of the team were Dick Roehm, Don Stewart, Stanley Glazer, and Bob Cohen. Opening up the season, our Maroon netmen forced the strong Lincoln team into a 3 to 3 tie, only to take a 5 to 1 defeat from the Pekin Chinks in the next meet. Lincoln followed up their previous tie and handed us a 4 to 2 loss in an exciting return match. Our racquetmen finally went into the win column in their next match with Princeton, coming out on top 5 to 1, only to be defeated again by a strong Rock Island team in the following meet. Bloomington provided us with our second win of the season as we handed them a one-sided 5 to 1 defeat. The last three meets proved very unsuccessful for Central. Dan- ville and Pekin both showed the ability which classified them among the state's leading teams. In the other meet our reserves gave the Princeton varsity a close match, but their inexperience accounted for their 4 to 2 defeat. Don Stewart and Dick Roehm qualified to enter the State Doubles Tournament, but were defeated in the first round. Won 2 Central ..... Central ..... Central ..... Central ..... Central ..... Schmidt Secretary of Admissions, Bradley College, Peoria, Illinois President-Dr. Frederic R. Hamilton Dr. Howard I. Bell, Ir.-Assistant to the President Registrar-Mr. Asa Carter RADLEY is a non-sectarian, co-educational college with a pro- gram which unites a liberal education, preparation for a major interest, and experience in practical life unde rguidance and counsel. The carefully selected student body of 800 comes from thirty-two states and six foreign counties. Bradley is on the approved list of the Association of American Universities and the American Association of University Women. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Sec- ondary Schoolsp by the University of Illinois with Class A standing, and by the Illinois State Department of Public Instruction. Bradley has unusually large curricular offerings for a small college. Besides regular liberal arts courses, there are departments in business administration, home economics, engineering, industrial education, music, art, pre-medical, and nursing. It has a national reputation. I-l'1'I'H.E'l'1CS Bradley supports and is interested in inter-collegiate and intra- mural athletics. ln addition to a schedule of football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis, which is arranged with leading middle western colleges and universities, the division of intra-mural athletics provides a well organized program which gives meaning to the aim, Sports for All. Such teams participate in all of the games mentioned above and in golf, archery, wrestling, hand ball, volley ball, swimming, tumbling and boxing. EXPENSES Bradley is not an expensive collegefor the student. It is endowed and is constantly increasing its resources in order that students will be required to pay as small a fraction of the cost of an education as possible. The tuition is very reasonable. This is especially noticeable when comparison is made with other standard college courses which do not offer as extensive technical, scientific, and laboratory courses. Gas in War proved itself the superior cooking and baking fuel, showed, when men were scarce and needs were great, that it can do a better cooking job. Gas is a high speed, precision fuel, fully automatic in operation. Gas is clean, convenient and improves working conditions. Peoria women are COOKING WITH GAS because it takes a Ilame to cook faster-most of their cooking is done on the top burners and this kind of cooking is almost always the kind that they want to get done in a hurry. The GAS flame also gives precision cooking at top speed. It gives you count- less controlled variations of heat for every cooking requirement, letting you cook as fast or as slowly as you wish.
