N 7 N f V An equally fast backload of ship's boats and ballasting up and the MARC was once more on its way. Additional excitement to this landing at Pian de Spille was the clearance for our UDT shipmates to complete an island insertion by parachute, both static' line and freefall. Upon completion of the various aspects of the landing, the MARC followed the path of LA MOURE COUNTY to a tender availability in the French port of Toulon. This was the first visit to France since 1977 and the crew was greeted by several changes, the requirement to wear their dress uniforms, an increased Shore Patrol requirement and prices had skyrocketed. American sailors were not singled out, as noted by the numerous French and Spanish Sailors in the crowds frequenting the Little Chicago entertainment district fbetter known as The Gut j near the gate to the base. Following the outstanding availability with USS PUGET SOUND fAD-382, COMSIXFLT Flagship, PENSACOLA and the MARC steamed to Asinara Bay, Corsica for what was to be the final exam of the deployment, Display Determination. This exercise was the culmination of all previous training anchorages, silent night landings, helo operations, opposed transits, interaction with-the Italian armed forces and topped off by a bombing exhibition on an island not more than two miles from the ship. Un Oct. 6, the last day of Display Determination, PENSACOLA bid farewell to Commander Palen who was relieved after two long years on board by Lieutenant Commander Dryer. Arriving in Malaga, Spain, 11 October, PENSACOLA looked forward to a leisurely time in a beautiful, quiet, Spanish liberty port. Natural disasters, however, are not scheduled and due -to a major earthquake in Algeria, it was decided to standby in case aid was required in refugee evacuation and an emergency sortie was ordered, It was determined, after long hours awaiting official news, that the squadron would not play an active role in therelief efforts and the pointy ends were turned west towards Rota, Spain for Desnail Oper- ations and Outchop from Sixth back to Second Fleet.
