PENSACOLA is the fourth ship in the history of the U,S, Navy to bear the name PENSACOLA, Her primary mission is to operate as a part of an Amphibious Assault Force. She can transport combat troops and their vehicles as well as pre-loaded heavy landing craft to assault areas, rapidly discharging the men and equipment without going to the beachhead herself. A unique feature of the ship is the well deck, similar to a drydock, which can be flooded to accomodate small craft within the hull of the ship. This permits her to transport and perform drydocking and repair services for boats as large as harbor tugs. At the stern, PENSACOLA has a landing platform on which helicopters can load and unload men and equipment. A large ship, PENSACOLA is 562' in length and a full load displacement of 13,700 tons with a draft of nearly 19'. Her armament consists of three 5750 calibre rapid-fire twin gunmounts. She can accommodate over 650 shipls company and troop personnel.
