The crew of Shellbacks headed south to Mombasa, Kenya where in the five day stay close to 955 of the crew obtained either photos of actual wildlife at Tsavo National Park or traded old clothesyand watches for a wooden menagerie from the main streets of Mombasa. Following an uneventful transit north and a return through the Suez Canal on August 8, PENSACOLA started an itinerary that took her in rapid succession from Athens, 'Greece to Alexandria, Egypt, and finally to Naples, Italy. Although the inport time was rather short, many crewvmembers took advantage of the edu- cation offered by the various tours. While in Athens, a large majority of the crew viewed the ancient architecture of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The main attraction of Alexandria was the one day tour to Cairo, where our friendly hosts took their nonplussed guests to the King Tut exhibit at the Cairo Museum, the Sphinx, the Great Pyramids, the Mosque of Mohammed-A li and a papyrus paper maker. After thisbday filled with sight seeing, bartering and fighting off the vendors and camel drivers, the tired and very thirsty desert travellers welcomed the sight of their floating home as the bus pulled into the compound. swf
