PENSACOLA is the fourth ship in the history of the U,S, Navy to bear the name PENSACOLA, Her primary mission is to operate as a part of an Amphibious Assault Force. She can transport combat troops and their vehicles as well as pre-loaded heavy landing craft to assault areas, rapidly discharging the men and equipment without going to the beachhead herself. A unique feature of the ship is the well deck, similar to a drydock, which can be flooded to accomodate small craft within the hull of the ship. This permits her to transport and perform drydocking and repair services for boats as large as harbor tugs. At the stern, PENSACOLA has a landing platform on which helicopters can load and unload men and equipment. A large ship, PENSACOLA is 562' in length and a full load displacement of 13,700 tons with a draft of nearly 19'. Her armament consists of three 5750 calibre rapid-fire twin gunmounts. She can accommodate over 650 shipls company and troop personnel. COMMANDER S. J. On 7 October 1980 following Display Determination 1980 Amphibious Landings, LCDR R, Dryer, relieved CDR D, Palen of the duties and re- sponsibilities ofthe position of Executive Officer, USS PENSACOLA. f The ,elief p,0ce.,, LIEUTENANT COMMANDER R. DRYER 3 LITTLE CREEK, VIRGINIA SPRING 1980 USS PENSACOLA prepares herself for the fourth annual cruise to her apparent summer residency, the Mediterranean. The schedule written, indicated a departure date of 4 June with all the familiar ports for liberty and upkeep in Spain and Italy. This schedule, however, waS repeatedlyupstaged by official word, originating anywhere from Mess Decks Rumor Control Centralyto CNO, that the final destination was a bit farther east: The 'Indian Ocean. This speculation was arrived at due to the directives: I I X VW,L M Z x Z f ' f uf U X f Z. Units attached to USS PENSACOLA, CDR Stephen Balut, Commanding Officer, were UDT 21 under the command of LT john Anderson, ACU 2 with LT Dan West as Officer in Charge and a team of Hospital Corpsmen under the guidance of CDR Doon Kingsbury. After the overnight southerly transit to Morehead City, N.C., the first official underway period of the deployment, the Marines and their gear were on loaded. The Task Force was comprised of one Marine Recon Unit with Ist LT Hap Holm,.USMC as Officer in Charge and also the CO of Troops for PENSACOLA, and one Marine Tank Company under the leadership of Ist LT Rusty Stokes. 7 ,, Departure, Morehead City, N,C,,saw Marine Amphibious Readiness Group KMARGI 2-80 headed east under the command of CAPT'Riendeau embarked in USS GUADAL- CANAL TLPH-72. Other ships in the Task Group were 'USS NASHVILLE KLPD-13j, USS LA MOURE COUNTY fLST-1194j and USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY KLST-11972. The focal point ofthe transit and the entire cruise was ,brought out from the start. Operations De- partment saw a training schedule packed full of Communications drills, ma- neuvering and ,non ma- neuvering drills, publication exercises and anti-aircraft exercises. Training for other personnel was also readily available, General Quarters, gunnery exercises, tactical maneuvering drills, leap- frogs fpracticing coming alongside a replenishment shipj, towing exercises and J boarding other ships. Even though many drills interrupted the sanctity of the Sunday Holiday Routine all was not strictly work. There was, on the first Sunday, a get acquainted cook-out on the Flight Deck for the intermingling of USN and USMC, Along with this, the first of several Flight Deck barbeques, was a Talent Show in which Chief Master at Arms Brown turned out to be an excellent Chief Master of Ceremonies and led what proved to be an entertaining evening for all. The following Sunday it was noted that the re- mainder ofthe Task Force hopped on the get- acquainted band wagon and on this ship-wide evolution Pepsi held her first Smoker of the cruise. Almost 30 sparring partners participated in this event that started mid-afternoon and continued past dark. fig? 2 Wfi fm x .wk f f l F x lv 'i A -fr. ! AN, 3 . One other significant occurance while ,at this Spanish Naval Base was that MARC 2-8075 schedule was starting to gel, our first training anchorage and liberty were ff firmly set, beyond that was still speculation but the Indian Ocean looked much closer to many. ns MW Wi 1 jyf 1 l N , in V 1 ,f 1 Q . The crew of Shellbacks headed south to Mombasa, Kenya where in the five day stay close to 955 of the crew obtained either photos of actual wildlife at Tsavo National Park or traded old clothesyand watches for a wooden menagerie from the main streets of Mombasa. Following an uneventful transit north and a return through the Suez Canal on August 8, PENSACOLA started an itinerary that took her in rapid succession from Athens, 'Greece to Alexandria, Egypt, and finally to Naples, Italy. Although the inport time was rather short, many crewvmembers took advantage of the edu- cation offered by the various tours. While in Athens, a large majority of the crew viewed the ancient architecture of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The main attraction of Alexandria was the one day tour to Cairo, where our friendly hosts took their nonplussed guests to the King Tut exhibit at the Cairo Museum, the Sphinx, the Great Pyramids, the Mosque of Mohammed-A li and a papyrus paper maker. After thisbday filled with sight seeing, bartering and fighting off the vendors and camel drivers, the tired and very thirsty desert travellers welcomed the sight of their floating home as the bus pulled into the compound. swf W , Q. -x V,- ,f' , ' 1 WZ f 'V 5 H :Q 'fu 44 W nf Y 'VI 'I ' ff I Q ff 1 4' s Q r' ,1 Q. ,, 0 way! , ff Q4 17, 4 ,f ' ff, ' 7' QW ffffvf ,A f , 1 , 76 'N M , 4 Z 7 W f V ,X 4.x 4 M , , LW! gs a M f if 4 , 1 f .ivy f Z , . , , X X M ww H X X I. It was strictly a working port as it has been during previous visits but there was strong participation in a weekend outing to Carney Park, an extinct volcano on the outskirts of the city with golfing, tenting and swimming facili- ties, a mini-mart, tennis courts and lots of space. Some people took the USO offered tours but more made the same tours on the do-it- yourself plan and reaped the benefits of seeing the sights of Rome, Pompeii, Capri and the local countryside without being rushed as tours will so often do. On September 5, following the two week upkeep period, PENSACOLA participated in the third amphibious exercise of the deployment and her first since I2 July. Immediately upon departure from Naples, LA MOURE COUNTY experienced engineering casualties and it was decided she would not participate in the exercise at Pian de Spille but head directly to Toulon, France. Additional excitement to this landing at Pian de Spille was the clearance for our UDT shipmates to complete an island insertion by parachute, both static' line and freefall. Upon completion of the various aspects of the landing, the MARC followed the path of LA MOURE COUNTY to a tender availability in the French port of Toulon. This was the first visit to France since 1977 and the crew was greeted by several changes, the requirement to wear their dress uniforms, an increased Shore Patrol requirement and prices had skyrocketed. American sailors were not singled out, as noted by the numerous French and Spanish Sailors in the crowds frequenting the Little Chicago entertainment district fbetter known as The Gut j near the gate to the base. This exercise was the culmination of all previous training anchorages, silent night landings, helo operations, opposed transits, interaction with-the Italian armed forces and topped off by a bombing exhibition on an island not more than two miles from the ship. Un Oct. 6, the last day of Display Determination, PENSACOLA bid farewell to Commander Palen who was relieved after two long years on board by Lieutenant Commander Dryer. Arriving in Malaga, Spain, 11 October, PENSACOLA looked forward to a leisurely time in a beautiful, quiet, Spanish liberty port. Natural disasters, however, are not scheduled and due -to a major earthquake in Algeria, it was decided to standby in case aid was required in refugee evacuation and an emergency sortie was ordered, It was determined, after long hours awaiting official news, that the squadron would not play an active role in therelief efforts and the pointy ends were turned west towards Rota, Spain for Desnail Oper- ations and Outchop from Sixth back to Second Fleet.
