When football season ends we re- tire our uniforms and marches and begin practicing for our annual Christmas program. Remember the sing-along with Mr. Bench? When we return from Christmas vacation rehearsal begins for The Spring Concert, the last band concert for the Seniors. We have lots of activities, too. This year we participated in the first an- nual Hempiield Band Festival. It was quite an accomplishment for us. We received a trophy which is now in the trophy casein the main hall. Our band members range in age from 12 to 18 and in size from 4, 9 Buz Zatkovich to 6' 3 Darryl Clair. That's quite a range. We're never very conspicuous at foot- ball games, but we're always there play- ing our halftime shows and charging our team on to victory.

It required a lot of practiceAeven in the rain and mud, but some how, we made it. Marching in the midsts of the band was hard since our timing was more important than when we just lead the band on the held and then stood on the side during the complete show. As we added twirling the guns to our routine, we found there was something about marching forward in step, twirling the gun in time to Hawaii-Five-O and not knocking the Hag out of the next color guard's hand. But then, we had new flag poles this year which were easier to control than the big clunky wooden ones we used to use. The height of the season was the Hempfield Area Band Festival. The timing was so close we couldn't waste a sec- ond. And we weren't sure ofthe ending. There were a thousand reasons to be nervous. It worked out. 113
