His early edu- cation was attained in local public schools. His father being an attorney, the youth went to the University of Wis- cousm to study law, and won his A.B. degree in 1906 and his LLB. from the Law School there in 1908. At the University he was captain of the Freshman crew and was on the football squad his first year, but then with- drew from athletics to earn his way through college. He won a place on the University debating team, managed the University Magazine two years and was editor of The Daily Cardinal, student newspaper, for two years. He was president of his class in its Junior year and the Commencement orator He became a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity and honorary class, legal, forensic and scholastic societies. The University of Maine and Dartmouth College more recently have each conferred upon him the degree ofL1D After a short trial in law practice, Penn State's president became an instructor in English at Oregon State College. Within two years he was advanced to the rank of professor. He then organized and became head of the Department of Polltlcal Science, and a year later organized and became director of the College Extension Service. His reputation as an executive extended across the continent to the University of New Hampshire, then known as the New Hampshire State College. He became its president in 1917, and in the nine years he served there, his record was such that Penn State trustees felt he was just the man to succeed Dr. John M. Thomas. He accepted their invitation on September 24, 1926, and assumed his duties at the College on January 1 1927. I 1 I Y.
