PETHICK If you ever stop to think what makes up and contributes to your school life, you will realize there are many phases. The Board of Education, the administration, the faculty, stu- dents. activities, and sports all play an important part. Probably you have never thought about it before, but our school life could be very easily likened to a symphony. We also have our board of directors, conductors. strings, wood- winds. brass, percussion. and soloists. to say nothing of the music critics and recorders. The conductors, the admin- istration. kept all the parts playing smoothly. Without them we could not have had the pleasing results from our symphony , HI H SCHUUL LEA ERS IJR. JOSEPH E. MCLEISTER ADVISES BARBARA AND JOAN, CO-EDITORS 58 No symphony would be complete without its music critics. Penn High's symphony certainly would not have been complete without Perm Points. Working continually throughout the year the staff brought to the students news of the clubs, social and athletic events, write-ups on senior personalities, and other bits of interesting opinions on differ- ent subjects. Assignments would be posted, news written, and asignments handed in and checked. After the typists finished, page editors would reread and send them to the printer. Page proofs had to be checked before the final copy could be printed. As if this were not enough, the whole cycle would just have to start over again on another issue. Mr. McLeister gave endless time to the furtherance of the paper. The symphony certainly should have been proud of our music critics . ep! Us Wellzlmformcd PENN POINTS STAFF First Raw: B. Anderson, A. SPFAKING UF CLUBS The music produced by the symphony also had color and variation added by the Woodwinds, the clubs. At Penn High we were extremely fortu- nate to have so much variation added to our school life. No matter what our interests were, there was a club to suit that interest. At the meet- ings we came to know others who had similar interests and studied different current topics. Many of the Woodwinds did services to the school, the teachers, and the other students. Our school life would have been much duller if there had been no clubs to add the color to our music . Df'11w . Kim: and Wulf what afffr 1 ass Peggy Marty and John read PENN PROGRESS. . DRAMA TIES No symphony could, in any way, outdo our Penn High symphony because of soloists. We had the best to be found as proved in My Sister Eileen, See How They Run, and Anything Goes. Losing only one match, Penn's superior team shut out four teams and won the rest by at least a five point lead. Under the expert sponsorship of Mr. VVolfe and team Captain. Tom Cherok, Penn got off to a flying start by beating Plum, Ford City, Shadyside, Kittan- ning, and Turtle Creek, with only Plum and Turtle Creek scoring against them. In the next game with Penn's traditional rival, VVilk- insburg, Penn came out on top by five points. In the next four games, with Plum, VVilkins- burg, Ford City, and Kittanning, Penn again came through victorious. The following match was held at Turtle Creek and Penn lost the match by one point, but was eligible for the VV.P.I.A.I.. sectional championship playoff at Mount Lebanon. In this match Penn again met Turtle Creek and this time came out the winner. In the first round at Chartiers Country Club Penn drew a bye and in the second round beat West View by 13 points. The W.P,I.A.L. finals held at Butler Country Club saw Penn become victor over Baldwin by a score of 13 to 2 and take the W.P.I.A.L. championship. Three members of Penn's golf team partici- pated in the W.P.I.A.L., individual champion- ships, Cherok, Davis, and Krancic. The results were Tom Cherok taking first place and Ray Davis placing fifth. Both Cherok and Davis played in the Pennsylvania State individuals. In this competition Cherok took second place and Davis took ninth. Again in 1950 Penn I-Iigh's golf team brought honor to its school. CURRY lr U .ASM Y' NI P4 .. E-13.5 - J,QfQfr2f.?1.2', Jr Q J, vi ' 1 4' Seated: D. Sampson, T. Cherok. Standing: D. Conville, R. Scores and Ties Penn's 1950 football team did not have the favors of fate bestowed on them last season. In the opening game with West View, after a score- tieing touchdown by Bolte, a bad break in the fourth quarter gave West View the chance to score and win the game from a superior Penn team. The first game in AA compe- tition with Turtle Creek saw a rugged Penn eleven meet a favored team and put up a stiff fight, but after a penalty called back a touch- down play, Turtle Creek blocked the kick on the next play and got their margin of victory. When the Penn men met Latrobe, again a game was lost due to bad luck. Penn fumbled on their own 6-yard line in the last three minutes of play and Latrobe recovered and scored on the fourth down. Although it was not shown in the final score of the Mount Lebanon game, Penn unquestionably out- played their opponents as even they admitted. The following game saw Penn come through with flying colors. Touchdown plays by Bolte, Harris, Strickengloss, and Malley put their team out in front to win over Shadyside by 26 points. The old jinx returned for two weeks, though, when Penn lost to Har-Brack and Munhall. Then, on the night of the game with the Indians' traditional rivals, the Wilkinsburg Tigers, all jinxes and bad luck were left far behind. The Redskins, led by Mc- Kamish and Piazza, scalped our favored opponents, 20 to nothing. The following loss to Butler did not dampen Penn's spirits and they were victorious over their last opponent, Scott. Final statistics proved Penn's abil- ity to play good ball even though they didn't always win. The final totals showed Penn with eight more first downs than their opponents and their total gains only eight yards less. Even though Lady Luck was not generous with breaks for Penn in the 1950 season, win or lose, the student body remained behind the team and their coaches, confident that they were putting everything they had into the game. Pro ved Peril rl 's S iw crests Coach Bruce Fisher said, Every team we played this year was stacked. with practically every school graduating from 18 to 22 playing seniors. We at Penn got by on seniority last year, but this year, we were forced to fall back on juniors for the major part of our line. These boys played remarkably well on de- fense, but lacked the experience necessary to play good offensive ball, making enough mistakes to cost us touchdowns. One look at our loss from penalties tells part of the story. We lost 255 yards in this manner after the first game. In the first game alone, we dropped 175 yards in penalties. Next year we shall have practically an entire senior team, but it will be two years before we can field an all-senior eleven which is necessary to play the type schedule we have-the toughest in AA ball. on the Gridiron MANAGERS CALDARELLI. BA SKB TBALLL This year Penn High's basketball team under the tutelage of Bucky Walters had a better than average record in Sec- tion 8 of the W.P.I.A.L., winning 6 and losing 6. The team had numerous varsity holdovers including Bolte, Haris, Hammer- strom, Carson, Snyder, and Strickengloss. Newcomers to the squad were Whitting- ton, McKamish, Speer, Seipert, and Piazza. Penn started the season with six exhibition games. We lost the first four games: to Latrobe 26-33, Allderdice 50-53 tHarris scored 20 points for the high in this gamel, Mt. Lebanon 34-37, and Jean- nette 37-58. Penn rebounded and triumphed over Latrobe 39-37, Oakmont 50-28, and also Swissvale 36-32 for their first league win. Penn dropped the next two league games, Rankin 39-55, Scott 37-54, and also dropped an exhibition game to Crafton 33-42. We defeated Braddock 58-36. Bolte was high scorer with 20 points. Wilkins- burg 52-38 and Turtle Creek 52-47 also fell to us with Bolte scoring 23 points in the latter. Penn then lost an exhibition game with Oakmont 53-56. Penn did not fare well in the second half as we lost three straight games to Swissvale 34-55, Rankin 28-42, and Scott 35-46. We then beat Munhall 59-49 lBolte A TENSE MOMENT led all scorers with 20 points! and Brad- dock 45-31. In our final two league games we lost to Wilkinsburg 46-49 and then defeated Turtle Creek 42-39 with Harris scoring 21 points. Penn entered a tournament in New Kensington and reached the finals by beat- ing Kittanning 40-38, Arnold 34-30, and East Deer 50-45. Penn, however, was de- feated by New Kensington 36-54. High scorers for the whole season were Harris and Bolte with 255 and 252 points respec- tively. Next year almost the entire varsity squad will be gone but with some promis- ing underclassmen Penn has good chances for a successful year. QW BASKETBALL - VARSITY First Roux' R. Bolle. R. Speer. R.
