Simpson, 1895 1900, an addition was made to the school building During the superintendency of F W Toan, C1900 19071, the school was raised to secord grade, the library enlarged, 'ree text book system introduced and music placed in the course of study Through the efforts of Superintendent T J Williams C1907 19101, the high school was advanced to first grade mxithe study of physics introduced From 1910 to 1913 the school was under the supervision of E W Howey Dur ing this time, the high school was placed on the recognized list and the educational interest increased During the summer and f ll of 1912, the last addition was erected to the building and a n w sanitary system installed The year 1913 marked the coming of Superintendent I S Winner At his com1ng,the study of political economy was 1ntroduced,a literary society re established, student council created and the school was r ised to a very high standard Saperinte dent W K Sullirdn followed Nr Winner and then cam Super intendent Neal 'rafts who held this position longer than any other adminis trator in the history of P H S C1919 l93AD Daring his leadership, home economics, mana 1 traning and conumr ial co rses were in tiat d Th idea of th senior class publishing a year book was also formalat d daring his term Mr Crafts later became mayor of Pemberville Lnder the administration of Mr C E Downing, the present, beautiful, modern brick scrool was rected Mr Downing w s the s pe intendent from 193A to 1939 The new school dedicated in 1936, w s built in two sections The coat of the first section being 8l20,000 and th s cond a80,000 The school also entered the North central Association giving it a still higher standard F O I I J. 4. 1 A . H 1 S T 0 R Y 0 F P E M B E R V I L L E S C H 0 0 L S The f rst lUStltUtlOD of learnlng in Pembervllle, The Forks, as it was called then, accordlng to the recollectlon of the ploneers, was bullt of logs 1U the year 1835 and sltuated on the banks of the Portage Rlver, near where the HOCklUg Valley brldge 15 now located The teacher, Mlss Almlra Webster, recelved the l1bera1 salary of one dollar per week and boarded wlth the puplls The secondschool waserected about 18A8 or 1850 onthe corner of College and Blerly Avenues Thls bulldlng was an lmprovement over the old, as lt was a frame structure The thlrd school bulldlng was sltuated on the east end of the lot now occapled by the Lutheran Church The fourth was sltuated on the lot where Thoma Rlder now 11ves Thls bulldlng contalned two rooms and was a two story structure In 1917 the school came under the guldance of a Mr Gorrel, who was, perhaps, the flrst teacher to be glven the t1t1e of superlntendent He was succeeded by a Mr Barton About the year 1875 the school bulldlng was moved to the present school lot From then to 1880 the school was under the care of Mlss Magrum, About 1880,the people of thls peaceful v111age declded that the 11ttle old frame bdlldlng was no longer flt as an 1HSt1tUtlOU of learn1ng,so plans were made to erect a magnlflcent bu11d1ng at a cost of 812,000 George H Wlthey w s the flrst slperlntendent ln thls new balldlng and he plloted the sctool the next s1x years The year 1883 saw th flrst graduatlng class John S Hoyman headed the school from 1886 to 1889 Ddrlng hls admln lstratlon, the study of Latln was resumed nd llterature and botany were added The standard of the school was ralsed so tHR,there were no graduates from 1887 to 1891 In 1892, D R Jones was elected superlntendent He was succeeded by A i . . . . H I S T O L M B L R V I L o H 0 con' Mr E T Rld6HOUT followed 1U the footsteps of Mr Downlng, who passed away ln offlce He served ln the Pembervllle Hlgh School system from 1939 l9h3 Superlntendent W W Schubert served the communlty and school ln the capaclty of an excellent coach as well as a competent admlnlstrator H13 term was from l9L3 l9b7 Mr J D Thompson was the superlntendent from l9L+7 to l95O He ser ved as the coach of the gunlor hlgh basketball team and led them to the flnals ln the county tournament From l95O 1952, Mr A J Kauber was the admlnlstrator He reorganlzed the student councll and lntroduced the athletlc councll to the school Under the admlnlstratlon of the present superlntendent, Mr ClydeE Plant, two new courses, dr1ver's 6dUCat1OU and Journallsm, were lntroduced, as part of the currlculum At the close of the 1952 l953 school term, the bulldlng was found en tlrely redocorated, the two unflnlshed classrooms completed, and a modern florescent llghtlng system lnstalled Also, the property on Plne Street next to the school was purchased by the Board of Educatlon Complled and edlted by Suzanne Menter and Robtrt Hobart R Y O F P ' ' L E S A O L S t
