SENIORS During the past four years you have had the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses and to participate in many varied activities. Many of you have taken advantage of the opportunities offered at Pecatonica High School and are richer for the experience gained. We wish all of you success as you continue your education or begin a career. We hope that your experiences and memories at Pecatonica High School are pleasant ones. Good luck to all of you. Tom Hoffman, Principal To the Class of '87: You are living in a society founded on the idea that anyone should have the right to say what they think. This idea is called freedom of speech and is guaranteed by our Constitution. The trouble with freedom is, that with everyone saying what they think, it is hard to decide what is true. All through school you have had the benefit of others' experiences to help you separate what was true from what was false, what was good for you from what was bad. Teachers and parents have tried to help you develop that sense for the truth that will need in a free society. As you leave high school, you will find yourself in situations where you must try out your truth-sense with little help from anyone else. Your friends may try to give advice, but often they haven't had any more experience than you have had. How do you decide? There is a word that we use to describe someone who is able to make wise decisions. That word is maturity. The person who can make decisions, not based on what feels good, but on what is good for himself and for others is said to be mature. My hope for you is maturity. There will always be choices to make, and you may make some mistakes. That is part of the process of gaining maturity. The secret is to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them; to begin to consider what is good for others and not to think only of yourself. As you learn and grow you will find the maturity to make wise decisions. The rest is up to you ... my prayer for you is maturity! David Zumdahl Superintendent s
