Many of you have taken advantage of the opportunities offered at Pecatonica High School and are richer for the experience gained. We wish all of you success as you continue your education or begin a career. We hope that your experiences and memories at Pecatonica High School are pleasant ones. Good luck to all of you. Tom Hoffman, Principal To the Class of '87: You are living in a society founded on the idea that anyone should have the right to say what they think. This idea is called freedom of speech and is guaranteed by our Constitution. The trouble with freedom is, that with everyone saying what they think, it is hard to decide what is true. All through school you have had the benefit of others' experiences to help you separate what was true from what was false, what was good for you from what was bad. Teachers and parents have tried to help you develop that sense for the truth that will need in a free society. As you leave high school, you will find yourself in situations where you must try out your truth-sense with little help from anyone else. Your friends may try to give advice, but often they haven't had any more experience than you have had. How do you decide? There is a word that we use to describe someone who is able to make wise decisions. That word is maturity. The person who can make decisions, not based on what feels good, but on what is good for himself and for others is said to be mature. My hope for you is maturity. There will always be choices to make, and you may make some mistakes. That is part of the process of gaining maturity. The secret is to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them; to begin to consider what is good for others and not to think only of yourself. As you learn and grow you will find the maturity to make wise decisions. The rest is up to you ... my prayer for you is maturity! Once again, the council created and organized all of the homecoming week's activities which all went over very well. The Student Council also sponsored four dances throughout the school year. One of these took place on the very first day of school to welcome students back. Later on in the year, there was a luau. This dance included Hawaiian decorations, a hula-hoop contest and a limbo contest. Teachers also received benefits from student council and their activities. During National Teacher Week, the students gave the teachers apples, appreciation cards, and on the last day of the week the teachers got the day off when the students stood in for them. Overall it was a very good year for the student council and the school. Each year the council gets stronger and more active, and hopefully the trend will continue. 18 FBLA Front Row (left to right) Erica Johnson. Denice Gustafson. Kelly Johnson. Teri Cnare. The purpose of the organization is to give students a chance to learn directly from business people about the business world. The club has monthly meetings, activities, community projects, and money making projects. Money raised is used for student expenses and to help the business department maintain and update equipment and supplies. Business people are invited as guest speakers at each monthly meeting to talk about business careers. The community projects this year included helping the Pecatonica Rotary host their annual Christmas party for senior citizens, collecting canned goods for the Rock River Valley Food Pantry, and making and delivering Easter baskets for Hospice. Members kept themselves very busy with monthly chapter meetings, section and region rallies, and state competitions and conferences. For the seventh year in a row, Pecatonica had a section officer who served a five-county area. This year's section officer was Penny Kellicut. In keeping with their focus on the family, the Pecatonica Chapter again sponsored their traditional activities of Dad's Night Out, Grandparent's Thanksgiving Dinner, and the Mother-Daughter Spring Banquet. Members selected topics for their spring meeting programs. Outstanding programs were presented on teen depression suicide and wise teen decision-making. Parents were invited to attend. Section 2A FHA honored the Pecatonica Chapter by presenting them a first place award for their year’s activities and work. Front Row L-R: Sarah Vickery, Renee Anderson. Jenny Reichensperger. When Pecatonica and Durand FFA chapters merged at the beginning of the year the newly combined chapter was looking for a good year and the events of the year did not disappoint. The chapter began the year's activities by attending the Section Leadership Training School. After the chapter hosted the section Land Judging Contest and the section grain judging show. The chapter sent teams to both of these contests and the teams placed well at both. The chapter was one of the main exhibitors at the section Horticulture and Grain Show, with members receiving many awards. In the months after the school year began the chapter was also busy putting together a community activity calendar and freeing the school's track of weeds. In November the chapter sent six students and Mr. Welling to the National FFA Convention Kansas City, Missouri. After returning from K.C. students set to work on Dairy Products Judging. The chapter placed fourth in the state in this contest. In February the chapters meat judging team placed first in the section meats judging con- test and individuals from the chapter placed seventh, third, and first. Due to the chapters performance at the section meats contest, the chapter sent a team to state competition also. The chapter’s public speaking participant took first at the section contest, soon after. The chapter is also engaged in landscaping around the school. The chapter also had teams present at the section Livestock and Dairy Judging Contest. Members of the chapter are looking forward to attending the annual State FFA Convention in June and The State Leadership Camp in July. Aaron Visgar. Steve DeMarco. Scott Greene This year looked to be a building season for the struggling Indians. The numbers were few again as was the size of the players and a new system had to be learned under Pecatonica’s new coach Nick Moses. These facts seemed enough to sadden any team and their hopes, but Coach Moses came in fired up. He realized the odds he was up against and he had learned the history, but he only looked up. His goal was to start a tradition; a winning tradition. He wanted to create and build a new positive attitude. Coach Moses repeatedly emphasized. You're a winner if you can come off of the field and honestly say that you gave it your all. He asked the Pecatonica players to at least be winners in this respect. The record shows no wins, but Coach Moses knows that the Indians were winners in all of their outings and he feels that off-season work on strength and a positive attitude will lead Pecatonica to maintain in victory in years to come. 28 Football Frosh-Soph Front Row L to R: Jim Knapp. David Crash Eckburg, Steve Riggs. The Pec Frosh-soph team may have been short on numbers, but certainly not on talent. In the opening game, Pec tied a Dakota team that went on to win the Northwest 8 Conference championship. The next week, the young Indians defeated the Durand team that finished second in their conference standings. Pec's conference season opened with a convincing 28-0 win over arch rival Winnebago and an exciting 25-24 come from behind victory over a tough Oregon team. The game saw Pec rally from a 24-9 third quarter deficit to score two touchdowns and a last-second field goal by freshman Adam Babcox. The remainder of the season saw the Indian team struggle with eligibilities and players moving up the Varsity squad. In fact, the season ended with Json Rager, Bill DeWall, Ted Deppe, and Scott Cox all seeing extensive Varsity action. On the season, Pec was lead by the passing of Ted Deppe and the receiving of Mike Bennett and David Holman. Bill DeWall rushed for over 500 yards while stalwart defense was provided with the aggressive play and leadership of linebackers Scott Cox, Bill DeWall, and Mike Bennett. 30 Football Varsity Front Row L to R: Kellie Meyer, Laurie Siemens, Crystal Siemens, Andrea Musso, Back Row: Coach Garrison, Cindy Boyer. (7-7 in conference play) Some season highlights included winning their first annual Thanksgiving tournament and defeating a tough Forreston team on Senior Night to end the regular season. Kim Winche was an unanimous selection to the Mid-Northern All-Conference team for the third year in a row. Kim also became Pecatonica’s all-time leading scorer this season. She finished her career with 1,030 points. As the team bids goodbye to the only two seniors on the team, they are determined to have a good season next year. Joel Bauch, Doug Stark. John Yakowicz, Dave Duke Knoup. The ’86-'87 Varsity season was a season consisting of many close and exciting games for both the players and spectators. The bad part of those games was we were usually on the losing side of the score. Seven times this team lost by five points or less. However, most of the team were underclassmen who gained valuable experience from these teams on even terms for next year. Players receiving honors for the season were: Brian Abbas-Co-captain and Hustle awards, Doug Stark-Co-captain and Free throw percentage awards, Mike Bennett-All Conference and Rebounding awards. Also, the team and school appreciated the effort put forward by Nando Kauer. 34 Frosh-Soph Girl's Front Row L-R: Kathi Kampen, Leigh Chapman, Sarah Vickery. Stacy Olson. Lori Nehring, Theresa Kielty. Renne Anderson, Coach Scheive. “Close but no cigar,” could be the statement that sums up the 1986-87 Frosh-Soph Girls Basketball Team’s season. The team’s record was 5 wins and 13 losses, but 7 of those losses were within 4 points. The young ladies never gave up in a game, coming back near the end of the game to keep the game interesting and within reach of victory. Renee Anderson led the team in scoring and was missed in various games where she had to split playing time by moving up to the varsity team. Second year players Penny Kellicut and Kellie Meyer supplied the rebounding of the team with 1st year sophomores Leigh Chapman. Stacey Olson, Sarah Vickery, and Deb Shippy splitting the rest of the playing time. Freshman Theresa Kielty led the freshmen class with playing time and hopefully will develop to a team leader next year. The girls team's best highlight was their first win which was an overtime victory at Polo coming back from 10 points down in the 4th quarter to tie the game and then win in overtime. 36 Frosh-Soph Basketball Front Row L-R: Jason Forde. The frosh soph exhibited a balanced attack, with Jason Rager averaging 11 points per game. Carl Carlson 9; Ted Deppe 8; Dave Holman 8; Shawn Hoffman 5; and Bill DeWall 3. The defense limited opponents to 40 points a game and forced an average of 20 turnovers. Coach Schnorr remarked ‘This was as hard working group as we have had in 15 years at Pec. Working with them was a fantastic experience. The effort they put forth was truly amazing.” This group should be a force to be reckoned with for the next 2 years. This year saw a large number of gal track members competing and a new enthusiasm on the girl’s track team. The new uniforms and sweats purchased made the girls look sharp and their performance can be described with the same word- sharp. Despite injuries and illness many girls achieved their personal best and three school records were set. Meredith Allen set a school record in the discus at 105'V2 , Heather Caroll set a record in the 800 with a time of 2:34.2 and Angie Fleming, Jackie Flynn, Heather Carroll, and Kathi Kampen set a record in the 3200 relay with a time of 10:44.8. It was a total team effort indicated by the fact that ten girls placed in the conference meet and seven girls placed in the sectional meet. Boys Track First Row L-R: David Eckburg. Steve Venovic. The floats were designed to perfection. The themes were Victory at Sunset'. Senior float winning first place. Second place went to the Juniors for A Marked Card. third place went to the Freshman for Dead Meat Cards. and fourth place went to the Sophomores for Shuffle the Cards . Starting Homecoming week was Switch Day in which guys dressed like girls and girls dressed like guys. The following day students dressed for Clash Day”. Hat and Shades Day took place Wednesday. We knocked the Cards back in time with Toga and Neanderthal Day on Thursday. On the last day of this fun-filled week, the school’s colors shone in the clothes that were worn by the students and faculty. We faced defeat when Forreston beat us in the big football game, but everyone’s efforts were put out making the loss a little easier to take. On Saturday night, the gym took on a different look. The Student Council and FHA decorated it beautifully for the Homecoming dance. Everyone danced to the music of the Fabulous X-Men. The court was honored at the Homecoming dance. Tom Schacht and Kim Winche were crowned the new King and Queen. Leanne McCartney and Mike Dirksen were chosen for the Senior court. Juniors were Kathy Green and Demian Weigle. Stacy Olson and Bill DeWall were the Sophomore attendants, and the Freshman attendants were Deanna Stark and Wade Musso. The memories are held once again by those who cherish their thoughts. The fun is over for the 1986 year, but there are many more years to come! 69 Musical Revue Senior-Faculty Game The Pecatonica teachers again this year proved they were not only excellent in the classroom but also on the “sports court.” The ladies defeated the senior gals in volleyball 15-10, 10-15, and 16-14, and the men defeated the senior young men in basketball 73-69. The game was a first in that it took four overtimes to come to a conclusion. The teachers hold the event each year to earn money for their scholarship for a deserving senior student. 78 — JUX ANN scum 1W WUGLAS 1 JiATON IW Graduation 1987 Graduation 1987 81 „« • ................ %k .
