Its record was 10-0 and has now won 47 straight matches in league competition. Sean Klotz was the league M.V.P. and was named to the League All-Star team along with Scott Guild. Rick Metivier, and Charlie Floyd. Jay Thompson, George Morfis, and Jon Zie- linski added much to the team ' s sucess. TRACK The spring season saw the boys track team complete their first triple crown, winning Cross-Country, winter and spring track. Mal- den and Arlington posed the biggest threat to the team but the boys pulled each meet out by nearly 20 points. The senior leadership of Tony Hantzopoulos, Wallace Johnson Scott Collibee, Dave Tran. John Galvin and Bill Tetrault was instrumen- tal in this season ' s championship. Front Row. The toughest opponent they had to face this spring was Somerville. The Tanner Track Team easily defeated them 81 45. This years seniors have to be given a lot of credit. Jen Brooks and Michelle Pappas, both captains, have always come through for the team. Other seniors like Hei- di Schmidt, Cathy Pettipas, Kerrin O’Donnell, Chantelle Violete, and Tracey Velton will be hard to replace because of their efforts. Pea- body runners have been able to experience continuous victories. Back Row. L to R: Jennifer Reynolds, Betty Exarhos, Eillen Donovan. Their re- cord was six wins and four loses. They were selected to play Danvers in the first round of the Division II North MIAA Tournament. Although the team did well, they are loosing 3 seniors. The team should do extremely well next year since they have two Freshmen playing Varsity singles. BASEBALL The Peabody High School Baseball Team fin- ished the year with 9 wins and 10 losses, 6 win, 6 losses in the league. Captain Tom Cur- ran led the GBL in batting with a .426 batting average. Next year looks like a promising year for the pitcher Faun Sweeney, an all star on the Boston Globe all-scholas- tic team, and catcher Debbie Strabonie. LACROSSE The 1989 Lacrosse Team finished the season with an 11-5 record. The Tanners were led by captains Mike Caufield, Dave Deplacido, and all-scholastic goalie Mark Cone. High points of the season were beating St. Johns Prep twice, beating Billerica for the first time ever, and qualifying for the State Tourna- ment for the fifth time in six years. The team set a record for the least goals allowed in a season, with 70. The record has stood since 1977. 1989 was a very satisfying and reward- ing one for the Lacrosse team, and hopefully one that will be remembered by players as an enjoyable season. JR Principal SUPER ' N TENDENT To the Members of the Class of 1989 One of the pleasures of my position as Principal is that I have the opportunity to be the conveyor of glad tidings to students who have achieved in various fashions. The publication of tbe 1989 META marks the ultimate milestone for the Class of 1989. For that accomplishment, I congratulate all the members of the Class. For the additional intermediate honors, the academic awards, the athletic titles and achievements, the extra-curricular success in theatre and music, you as a class are to be further commended. Those other accomplishments are often times the ones that reside the longest in people ' s memories. Not to diminish the value of the diploma that you have earned as graduates, the other accomplishments are the added fringe benefits, the activities that help to mark the class ' sense of individuality, and the uniqueness of its individual memhers. In all honesty, I can say that when and if we meet several years from now, I may not be able to remember for sure the specific year in which you graduated but there is no doubt that I will have specific remembrances of the way in which this group, the Class of 1989, made their mark at P.V.M.H.S. I am pleased to have had the chance to share in those activities as either an observer or a participant. The Class of 1989 has brought pleasure to me in my capacity as Principal. You have displayed a sense of purpose and a sense of community in your three years at P.V.M.H.S. I congratulate you on your accomplishments as a class. I look forward to hearing from you as you enter into the post-high school world. I wish you the hest of luck in your future endeavors. Last but not least, I wish you more than fair return on the efforts you expend in pursuit of happiness in your future lives. ✓ 20 Dr. Roy Faria Unit Director Savageau House Richard Codair Unit Director Quinlan House Henry Eager Unit Director Lappas House Gerald Donovan Assistant To The Principal Dr. James Buckley Superintendent ADMINISTRATION Gregory Theokas Assistant Superintendent Benjamin Hampton School Business Administrator 21 Jan Anderson Social Science Stephen Baberadt Richard Baga Music Science Maureen Barbuto Human Ecology Lorraine Benoit Physical Education Melissa Bick English Paula Campbell Social Science Pat Black Computer Aide Kathleen Cassidy Mathematics Ina Bornstein Business X oyv ttv ' A yCAi Edward Brawley Distributive Education Robert Cavanaugh Foreign Language - f r, Yl me George Celata Supervisor-Industrial Art Marie Brett Science Sarah Cera Special Education Mary Condon Elizabeth Congdon Daniel Connelly Karen Connolly Albert Conti Resource Social Science Social Science Resource Industrial Art 22 Faculty Leslie Garber English Mark Gatli Resource Special Education Mary Ann Fiato Human Ecology Grace Fitzpatrick Supervisor-Human Ecology Joseph Cushing Science m- Elaine Espindle Department Head-Enghsh Leo Espindle Librarian Paul DeCourcy Science Marie Evans Special Education Aide Louise De)ardins Social Science Gail Falkoff Mathematics Linda Goncalves Library Aide Eve Gray Foreign Language Faculty Donna Costa Department Head- Electronics Sarah Dugas Science Kaellen D ' Amour Department Head-Business Thomas Flynn Distributive Education 23 -BESS James Grotto Mathematics Mary Lawler Science Ann Irish Mathematics Robert Heil Mathematics Robert Johnson Business Michalene Hague English George Hennessey Social Science Emily Kalafatis Foreign Language Harry Hesketh Science June Kessel Special Education Aide Judith Lavoie Human Ecology Eva LeBlanc Athletic Director Secretary Donna Heartshorn Business Margaret Johnson Business Anthony Leitao Business Peter Lampropoulas Social Science Mary Ann Kiley Business Elaine Kirby Human Ecology Gerald Hallinan Resource Francis Hardy Department Head-Social Science Faculty Margaret Maher Science Virginia McSweeny L.L.R.S. The mighty tanner offense led by Wallace Johnson, Jeremy Coffey, and Greg Alexander fal- tered against Malden in its sixth game, but re- bounded strongly by shutting out a potent passing team from Cambrige R + L. John Utz, Chris Rog- ers, and Roy Anderson sparkled as Scott Webster heaved his way into contention for 1 quarter- back in the G.B.L. The Denfensive line was nearly impenetrable as Howard Morse, John Galvin, Dave MacGillvary, Jeremy Coffey, and Gary Gullman laid waste to opposing offenses. Dave. Silva, Russ Anderson, Mike Patten, and Tom Curran made the airways dangerous by picking off many would be touch- down passes. TOO First Row R. Robinson. C. Pereira. A. Alpuerto. Z. Summit. J. BUCKLEY, JR SUPERINTENDENT PETER D. MOONEY DIRECTOR To the Members of the Class of 1989: It seems like only yesterday that you came into the Vocational School for the first time. Since that first day in September , the Auto Mechanics have re- paired over 3,000 vehicles , the Carpenters _have built several homes, garages , decks, sheds and wheelchair ramps, the Body Shop has put over 500 cars back together and the Machinists , Electricians and Electronic students have completed countless ta sks . During your four years here, you have demonstrated your ability to acquire new skills and meet new challenges. You have a right to be justifiably proud of your many accomplishments. You are uniquely prepared to meet the demands of a highly competitive and increasingly technological society. Please accept my sincere congratulations and best wishes for a bright and rewarding future to each and every member of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and Peabody Vocational High School, Class of 1989. Carle Capela burned his peach fuzz off when Tony Silva and Rick Ferreira wet experimenting with a Bic lighter. Angelo Reale was asked to leave for fiv days for something illegal the very first week of school. Angelo was nevti really lucky about getting away with anything. John Aia joined Ange because of the infamous M S M ' s incident. By the way, Elio DaSilv William Clark, and Andy Poretsky and also Bob Pellietier are the on! survivors of the freshman year auto mechanics. What did happen to thot other five? Roy Easter may have given them a ride without a licence as F ' r was apt to do during that year. Bill Panek warmed things up again t almost blowing up the carpentry shop. He said, not me! Do you remen | ber Leo Silva’s ripped pants and how he ended up in the street after fallir , ! out of the van. What happened to the rabbits? Could Gizmunt, Mille y Davidson, Trefry, Jalbert, Gaudet, and Bellville have something to do wit it? We thought our lunches tasted strange that year. Yuk! During our sophomore year things cooled down a little. Arthur Gaudet wjj told to fix the lights in the supply room, but he never lit up a thing. Well, E Eppinger did try to shed some light on things when he accidentally si Shane Malia’s coat on fire. Doug Ferguson, Chris Davidson, Steve Previt i Rich Jalbert, and Mark Dolan got suspended the same year for cuttin |j shop to get lunch at Bill S Bob ' s. We never would have gotten suspendec said Steve Previte, if Dolan could drive.” Mr. Lembidakis shattered h glass desk top when he asked Robert Gizmunt to catch” and Bob didn’ Billy Clark had a raising experience when Bob Pelletier accidental hitched the chain fall to the front of his pants and lifted him off tF ground. Angelo Reale liked sophomore year so much, he did it twic Richard Russell had difficulty staying seated in the van. He always seeme to be on the floor. Christine Bradley and Angel Thibedeau were not on tF same floor, but they were always napping in cars in auto body that yea Dolan, did you ever get your spark plugs back? The class of ' 89 will nevt forget how big the bump on Dugar ' s neck was when he got a muse spasm. Things heated up, and tempers got out of hand by junior year. Rhod Easter and Bill Panek did something to an under classman in the Jiff John.” Glen Bettencourt had those terrible purple sweat pants that FI should have taken off. Kevin Moody tried to put a fourteen foot piece i stock in a twelve foot van. It didn’t work. Jason Woods and Bill Clat celebrated Fourth of July for two whole weeks at the end of the junii year. Chris Colagiovanni thought the shop had a ghost when his car toe off by itself and went across the shop. Remember when Doug Fergusc took off his glasses to fight and lost sight of his opponent, but still wo Kevin Denis gave a freshman a head butt, and Kevin didn ' t even feel thing. Now, that shows you how hard our heads are. We only had one foo fight during the four years, but everyone was angry at us — especially t cafeteria staff. Jeff Larcome got caught under a pile — Bill Clark, And Poretsky, and Chris Tavares — Its a wonder he survived. Arthur Gaudet began our senior year no less electr if y ingly than we ha started. He short circuited the bells in school. What ever happened I Christine Bradley’s egg” that she received a ransom note for, dot anyone know anything about this? It might be interesting to note that w still like to play games. Why is the toilet missing in machine shop? Joe, at you too heavy? Richard Jalbert’s attempt to shock Shane Malia’s girlfrien backfired in his face. Ricky Ferreira, why did you punch that window Richard Hunt left school early and we all wish him luck. Chris Tavares di senior year twice. Can he do it thrice?! Will Mr. Marquis and Mr. Celal finally leave this year? Mike Conroy is leaving for sure — still smiling. From all of us in the senior class of ' 89 who have made it through after foi or five years — it really wasn’t all that bad.
