PKWeJPAC ' S MESSAGE ' PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1984 Please accept my congratulations upon your graduation from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and Peabody Vocational High School. In the short time I have been here, I have come to know firsthand the qualities that you possess. It is my disappointment that you are leaving now before I have had the opportunity to know you better. The time has come, however, for you to move on to newer places, to expand upon the skills you have acquired here, to nurture the talents that you all possess and to continue to grow as the individual people you have come to be. I feel privileged to have been a part of that process for this one short senior year. I look forward to hearing and reading of your future success. Best of luck in all of your endeavors. Our principal, Mr. Welch, and our new Unit Directors, Dr. Faria, Mr. Eager, and Mr. Codair, welcomed us with kind and positive words. We were greeted by our new homeroom teacher, and given the grand tour of our huge school! After a few weeks, the building didn’t seem so big anymore, and the sophomores blended together to make one big class. With the help of our Sophomore Class Advisor, Mr. Terlizzi, elec- tions were held, and we chose Jackie Cooper as our President, Michael McKenzie as our Vice President, Kelly Cohane as Secretary, and Eddie Bogash as Treasurer, to lead us in our adventures. The main goal of the sophomore year has always been to raise money, and the newly formed Class of ' 84 was no exception. Our Homeroom Reps sold candy canes all through December, and after quite an amusing assembly, the whole class participated in a maga- zine drive. Totally, we raised over $2,500. 00 to fund our future endeavors. Along with the Class of ’83, some of us attended ski trips to Loon and Cannon Mountains. Stage One proved PVMHS has its share of musical as well as acting talents by presenting Sweet Charity” and entering Hello Out There” in the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival. In February, amid Valentine’s Day and Carnation Day, Jackie tried to organize a Valentine Semi-Formal, and we all remember how that turned out! Once again State One dazzled us, this time with the comedy, You Can’t Take It With You. ' Suddenly, our first year of high school was over. It didn’t seem possible. Many of us could still remember the first day of school and traveling down Main Street!” We looked forward to summer vaca- tion, but ever more, we looked forward to our Junior Year!! Once again, the first day of school fell on September 9, as we began 180 days as the Juniors of Peabody High. We returned with high hopes for a progressive and exciting year. We held another class election, and chose Dennis O’Neil as President, Mike Mantsouram as Vice President, Tracy Cassidy as Secretary, and Tom Diminiture as Treasurer. With our competent Student Council, Homeroom Reps, and our Class Advisor, Mrs. Yost, it looked like a full year of events ahead of us. Our first was the Junior Class Halloween Party! With such characters as a King, Bumblebee, Adam Ant, and a few male cheerleaders, it was hard to choose the best! But Kim Watts as a mermaid, Chris Hayward and Mike Donovan as a priest and nun, walked away with the honors. The party, held at Kowloon, was a grand success! Stage One’s musical this year was The Music Man ”, starring Deb- bie Ciman and Marc Freedman. Christmas vacation came and went, and we welcomed 1983 by ordering our class rings! We couldn’t wait to get them, but we were in no hurry to pay for them! In February, the annual carnation sale was held. Red, pink, and white carnations were spotted all over the school! On February 4, 1983, we held an Italian Night. However, due to the high price of $12.00, only a few dedicated Juniors traveled to Augus- tine’s to enjoy the feast. As a result, the Class of ’84 lost some of the money that it had built up in the treasury. Stage One had better luck with their production of Equus.” They entered the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival and won the statewide competition, sharing the honors with St. John ' s Prepll The Junior Class was still in debt” however, and Mrs. Yost jokingly suggested having a Poverty Party!” Thus, a new event was born. The first Annual Poverty Party was held at Kitty’s Restaurant on April 13, 1983. The idea was to come dressed as bummy” as possi- ble. By popular decision, Donna McCarthy and Adolpho Cuevas became the Best Bums of ’84.” Music was provided by a new D.J., Rich Bono, and everyone had an awesome time! By this time, we were busy planning for the highlight of the year-our Junior Prom. There was some disagreement over whether or not to have a band or a disc jockey. So the class voted, and a D.J. was what they wanted. Our prom was held at the Palace in Saugus, on May 20, 1983. Everyone danced all night to the music of Karen Blake from Kiss 108, and no one can forget eating our meal while the theme song of Rocky” played in the background. Our Prom Queen, Linda Bloomberg, was joined by her court of Lisa Warner, Rosa Coelho, Tracy Cassidy, Sophia Petradelis, and Kim Budd. For the first time in Peabody High History, a Prom King was chosen and David Sapienza was the lucky guy! After the presenta- tion of roses and crowns, everyone was dancing again. Even though some of the records skipped-due to an unknown reason-everyone enjoyed themselves and danced until midnight. Peabody High’s Junior Class left the Palace tired, but very satisfied!! After we said good-bye to our Senior friends, it was time to take finals. We realized then that the next time we came to school, we would be the Seniors!! Luau!! The Class of ’84 returned to school on September 13, 1983. psyched to have our best year yet! After a hard fought election, we once again chose Dennis O’Neil as our President, Tracy Cassidy as our Secretary, Tom Diminiture as our Treasurer, and Arthur Hiou as our new Vice President. By the end of September we had a rough idea of what was ahead of us. For our first event, we planned a Field Day on October 10, 1983. We partied it up at Cy Tenney Park in West Peabody. We tried (almost successfully!) to build a giant pyramid, but for some reason we just couldn’t keep our balance! The Tanners had their opening football game on October 7, 1983 against non-league Salem. We lost, but who knew what the Tanners had up their sleeves for the rest of the season. Next, we planned our Halloween Party. This year it was to be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Peabody Square. After overcoming obstacles in our way, we planned the party for Halloween night 5:30- 9:30. We ate a deli menu and danced to the music of Steve Cataldo. Prizes were awarded to a male belly dancer, Huey, Duey, and Louey, CjCASS I two Samurai Girls, a man with two heads, and even Mr. Tl! But who ( can forget the lady who took our tickets at the door? (Was it you, Arthur Hiou?) Our party had to break up at 9:30, but no one was ready to go home just yet. Still in costume, we raided Land and Sea and ate roast beef and shakes. Our Homeroom Reps sponsored a bake sale on Parent’s Night to raise some extra money. Also, bringing in a little more money was the concession stand at the home football games. Speaking of foot- ball, the Tanners were cruising through the GBL with an undefeated record! Our last home game was against Brockton-a win could mean a trip to the Superbowl! Before a huge crowd, the Tanners romped over Brockton with an overtime victory-and only the Thanksgiving Day game stood between Peabody and a trip to Foxboro! Meanwhile, the girls in the Senior Class were busy getting ready for their Powder Puff Football” match. Even though the other team never showed up, the team had a great time and promised to do it again in the spring. Stage One was busy with their production of the musical Peter Pan”, using real flying equipment from Peter Foy of Las Vegas. Also, the high school chorus participated in the production of Oliver”. Thanksgiving came and went, and with it, a victory for the Tanners, who had fun with Saugus, 42-6! With a little help from Brockton, we were on our way to the Superbowl to face Natick High. A big pep rally was held the day before to get everyone psyched up. The turnout, despite SAT and Achievement Tests, and the long haul to Foxboro, was amazing! With the enthusiastic crowd behind them, the Tanners took the field, twenty-two of them playing their last game of the season. Natick, however, was too tough, and the Tan- ners lost 28-14. The loss was only evident on the scoreboard, howev- er, the Tanners and their fans enjoyed a 9-2-0 records and an extended season! Thanks Tanners, you were Awesome!! All of PVMHS participated in a Heart to Heart Computer Match- up”. in which we had to fill out a questionaire and pay $1.50 to get a list of ten names of people with whom you were compatible. The experience was quite interesting! The next event on the agenda was a Student Council sponsored Blood Drive on December 19, 1983. Many Seniors signed up to donate some blood, but a lot chickened out when the time came to have the needle” stuck in their arm! Then, before we knew it, it was Christmas vacation, and then January, 1984: our year of graduation. It was hard to believe that the Big Day” was scarcely five months away! The first event of the year was the annual Mid-Winter Snowball, a tradition at Peabody High. It was to be held at Jimmy Allenhurst on January 27. Over fifty couples attended and danced to the music provided by Steve Catallo. Also attending were Mr. McCarthy, our new principal, and Mr. Welch, our former leader, (who seemed to be coming back to a LOT of school events!). Both shared the limelight as they took turns dancing in the middle of a circle of Seniors! Never say Peabody has shy teachers! We then enjoyed a few snow days off, as well as half-days for mid- terms. Also providing some entertainment were the Winter Olym- pics, held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. The United States walked off with eight medals in all during the competition on February 5-19. Stage One provided their own entertainment with the production of Deathtrap”, a thriller, on February 9, 10, and II. They also began to prepare a shorter version of the play to enter in State Competition, as well as beginning fund-raisers for their trip to Indiana in June. On February 15, all of the new members were inducted into the George Peabody chapter of the National Honor Society. Among the Smarties” were 37 New Seniors, joining the 23 Upper Classmen already in the group. Dr. Buckley was the guest speaker. Friday, February 17, Peabody High went back 30 years as The Senior Class held a 50’s Sock Hop. Everyone was to attend in their favorite Happy Days” or Grease” attire, and dance to such songs as Runaround Sue” and Jail House Rock”. The event was held at Saint John’s Hall in Peabody Square. The music was being supplied, once again, by Steve Cataldo. Everyone’s legs were sore after doing the Twist”. Quickly we returned to our own methods of dancing. A few kids even tried to Break Dance! About 90 satisfied Seniors went home that night feeling as though they had just stepped out of a time capsule! During the beginning of March orders were taken for our Class of ’84” shirts. The price was nine dollars. The football style shirt with a big 84 surrounded by all or our names would surely be worn with PRIDE. After completing their last games of the season, both our Boy’s and Girl’s basketball teams found themselves sitting on top of the Great- er Boston League. This was a position well earned, seeing that the Boy’s overall record was 18-2, and the Girl’s was 20-0! Both also earned a spot in the tournament, providing even more winning teams for Peabody High. Also in March, Student Government Day elections were held for those who would participate on April 16. All of the winners looked forward to dressing up and spending a day running the great City of Peabody! Did I hear proposals for shorter school days and longer vacations?!? The long awaited Toga Party was to be held on March 23 at the Knights of Columbus Hall promised to be the BEST event of the year. We all looked forward to dressing up in sheets and partying for hours, as is the tradition at P.V.M.H.S.. Of course we also had a lot of other great things on our minds with Class parties as well as Senior Week - including the Senior Banquet, Field Day, the Day Trip, the PROM and the Beach Party quickly shaping up and aproaching. JUNE 10, a day that we’ve been waiting for for 12 years was finally within reach. GRADUATION DAY!!! We were proud to have been a part of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School’s history. Our class was fun, active, exciting, stylish, and of course AWESOME! The traditional uniforms of navy and white were replaced by Colum- bian blue, navy, and white. This new look was the first inspiration for the experienced Tanner team. Starting for the Tanners in the backfield were seniors captain Mike Ryan, captain David Sa- pienza, Bob Vacarro, Loren Rocker, George Smyrnios, Peter Smyr- nios. and Bill Murphy. The line consisted of captain Jim Murphy, Jim Libbey, Dave Bovio, Jeff Maguire, Peter Gerakaris, Greg Wall, Brian Murray, Bob Kelley. Adolfo Cueves. and Dan Rigol. With this mighty team the Tanners clenched the Greater Boston League Title and won the opportunity to play in the Superbowl. Bottom left to right: J. Curran, E. Hantzopoulos, P, Cronin. Capt. D. Co-Captains Diane Pettipas and Anne Manning along with junior Sherri Cove led the Greater Boston League in scoring. Other offensive threats were Julie Curran and Anne Trabucco. The defense was led by senior Kerry Black and juniors: Trisha MacGregor, Irene Mooka, Diane McGovern, Kristen Smerczymski and Jane Dow- ney. Senior Goalie, Patti Cronin registered many shut-outs and played a very important role in our team’s winning season. o 125 r v Bottom left to right: S. Kemp. R. Lebel. Capt. M. Blanch. Capt. M. Inside halfbacks Robbie Lebel and Capt. Mike Blanch really made Peabody’s 3-4-3 line-up work. Adding to their skillful play was the strong team play of Marc Sauvageau and Jack Sweeney. On the receiving end of the halfback’s passes were the Tanner forwards, led in the center by goalscorer Kevin Leonowert and his strong shot. Accenting him perfectly were the speed and dribbling ability of Capt. Mark Leonard. These skills were enough to earn Leonard the leading scorer honors. Steve Calandra helped out on the left-wing with his quickness and team play. The one word for Tanners defense was stability”. Led by veteran fullback David Clarke in the center, who played several games nursing a dislocated shoulder, the Peabody defense was a tower of strength. On the right side was the spirited play of George Joos. O n the left side was defensive specialist Steve Kemp. Sophomore Justin LeBlanc also gave the defense good speed off the bench. The Tanners had great help from goalies, Steve Maguire and Marc Mover, each playing excellent ball and splitting the season. ' WB ■ . Georgeou- S. Hunt. M,. Simons. Not ' Bejtm UrtM right. K. Playing against superior teams from the Northeastern Conference proved to be discouraging, but it was an excellent learning experience. There were many well talented girls on the team who worked together to make a successful season. The offensive line was provided by wings Chris Calan- dra, Beth Fabiano, and Sue Dullea with Tracey Spencer and Cathy Clopper on the inside. Halfback power was exerted by Kim Leonowert, Co-Captain Kim Watts, Ma- rie Burke and Chris Murphy with Faith Angelakis, Mari- beth Bowlds, Co-Captain Donna McCarthy, Eleni Geor- geopoulous, and Sheila Hunt providing the full back depth. Melissa Goodwin also did a tremendous job in goal. Coach Robert Simons did an excellent job putting the team together for the season. ■ Bottom left to right: Capt. S. Mello. Capt. k Ellis, J. Vierra. This year’s cross country team was very fortunate to have a dedicated coach like Phil Sherridan. His demand for excellence and serious attitude aided the runners in every sense. For the seventh year in a row, the girls have won the Greater Bos- ton League Title and hope to continue their excellent record. After losing the title in 198.3, the boys have recaptured it once again. Captains Scott Fuller, Ed Fitz- simons, Stephanie Mello, and Kim Ellis wish the best of luck to the new runners. The Peabody High Girl’s Basketball Team had the honor of being ranked 1 in the state in Division I after only seven games. By the middle of the sea- son. the team, captained by Lisa Smith and Anne Manning, had an execellent record of 9-0, in the Greater Boston League, and 13-0 overall. Along with their invaluable experience, Diane Pettipas and Julie Curran brought their expertise into the game. Aid- ing the seniors were juniors, Beth Fabiano, Kristen Smerczynski, Diane McGovern, Sherri Cove, Tracey Spencer, and league leading scorer Kim Foley. In only seven games, the team surpassed last year ' s winning record. The high-spirited attitude and un- limited ability of the veterans was a great inspira- tion for the rookies. The 1984 Peabody High Hockey Team has shown that they are still around and that they are not going to give up. The 1984 Gymnastics Team made a good show- ing for it’s small, inexperienced team. The team worked hard to increase individual scores, and as the season went on, the team scores greatly improved. Captians Julie Gargas and Laura Burns led the team. Julie excelled in the balance beam and floor exercises, while Laura competed as an all- around and scored on each event. George Smyrnios did an excellent job coaching the team with help from assistant coaches James Nangle and Phil Sher- ridan. Captains Peter Smyrnios, Jim Murphy, Ed Fitzsimons, and Mike Sanderson led the team to an excellent record of 6-0 by the middle of the season. Peabody dominated Arlington and Medford, the two teams that had posed a problem in the past. The team ' s main goals were to continue their undefeat- ed record and make it to the Greater Boston League Championship. 143 The Girl’s Indoor Track Team was led to another outstanding season by captains Maureen Hart, Karen Romano, Jenny Vierra and Toni Eon. The team worked hard to keep their Greater Boston League title. Jenny Vierra And Stephanie Mello led the way in the distance events with Kim Ellis. Karen Romano, and Toni Eon picking up the pace in the 600 and 1000 meter races. Maureen Hart and Corinna Cassidy helped out in the hurdles for their third year. Juniors Gina Braz, Mary Donlon, Tricia MacGregor, and Renee Martin greatly contributed to the success of the team. The Peabody swim team had their most success- ful season this year. Dominating the Christmas Jamboree, a meet against three other local teams was the most exciting win of the year. The team ' s goal was to win the G.B.L. Confer- ence meet and place in the sectionals. Coach Ken Leawood, along with seniors Dan Pa- lomo, Catherine Nee, and Captain Debbie Dono- van helped motivate the team to establish sig- nificant time drops for everyone. The swim team’s objective this year was to make known to other teams that Peabody is stronger than ever and will continue to prove its great ability and versatility in the swimming pool. 147 9 $ Mockcy Peabody 07 VS. 04 Revere Peabody 06 vs. 05 Somerville Peabody 05 vs. 08 Medford Peabody 04 vs. 04 Malden Peabody 03 vs. 02 Everett Peabody 01 vs. 04 Arlington Peabody 14 vs. 00 Chelsea Peabody 06 vs. 04 Revere Peabody 04 vs. 05 Somerville Peabody 03 vs. 08 Medford Peabody 02 vs. 02 Malden Hoy ' s Hasketball Peabody 54 VS. 59 St. John’s Prep Peabody 76 vs. 59 Dom Savio Peabody 71 vs. 69 Salem Peabody 56 vs. 61 Beverly Peabody 65 vs. 63 Revere Peabody 66 vs. 36 Somerville Peabody 56 vs. 52 Malden Peabody 52 vs. 46 Chelsea Peabody 66 vs. 54 Arlington Peabody 59 vs. 52 Everett Peabody 68 vs. 67 Medford Peabody 62 vs. 53 Revere Peabody 60 vs. 50 Somerville Swimming Peabody 77 VS. 91 Malden Peabody 104 vs. 88 Lynn English Peabody 104 vs. 66 Lynn Classical Hoy’s Winter Zrack Peabody Peabody 43 36 vs. vs. 28 40 Arlington Danvers Peabody 33 vs. 43 Melrose Peabody 58 VS. 28 Somerville Peabody 65 vs. 90 Beverly Peabody 64 vs. 22 Malden Peabody 66 vs. 91 Marblehead Peabody 62 vs. 24 Revere Peabody 67 vs. 91 Medford Peabody 61 vs. 25 Everett CHRISTMAS JAMBOREE Peabody 61 vs. 25 Arlington Peabody 88 Peabody 55 vs. 31 Medford Lynn 82 Salem 78 148 Jield Mockey Peabody 05 VS. 01 Malden Peabody 03 vs. 00 Bishop Fenwick Peabody 03 vs. 00 Everett Peabody 04 vs. 00 Revere Peabody 03 vs. 02 Arlington Peabody 04 vs. 00 Brookline Peabody 03 vs. 00 Malden Peabody 01 vs. 01 Bishop Fenwick Peabody 08 vs. 00 Everett Peabody 07 vs. 00 Revere Peabody 00 vs. 02 Arlington Peabody 03 vs. ot Brookline ip A ft ft % 9- ,J ft %V % ft «5fe ' S- 9- - V °o- . However, we never could have done it on our own. Under the guidance of Mr. Jack Wilson and Mr. Frank Hardy the yearbook seemed to come to life. With Mr. Wilson teaching us about the need for creativity and the various methods of attaining this and with Mr. Hardy helping us to organize our ideas, to gain financial support and to meet those dreaded deadlines, it was hard to go wrong. The tremendous amount of care and devotion that Mr. Wilson and Mr. Hardy exhibited to the META staff, to the yearbook itself and to the entire graduating class can be seen within each page of this book. We would like to thank you both for all that you have done. Sincerely. My eyes have opened to morning. I’ve watched my sun rise shine. The horizon before me widens now and I know that it is mine. My dawning life is ending. I feel it ebb away. My future lies ahead of me With the coming of the day. I view the road before me As it winds through foreign lands. And though it twists and severes It remains at my commands. And low and behold to all of you Who’ve shared my morning with me. Thank you for the times I’ve loved And never shall set free. For in my own I shall always hold My ever special dawn. But noon is coming upon me now And I must be traveling on . . . — Julie Gargas
