PEOPLE Many unique people made the 70 ' s a memorable decade. In music, we saw the rise of Donna Sum- mer and the Village People on the disco scene. Peter Frampton and Kiss hit the top of the rock charts, and Blondie made its mark on the new wave music. John Travolta and Olivia Newton ' - lohn took us back to good old rock and roll in Grease. Television, that vast wasteland, was dominated by the presence of the original Angels - Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett - Ma- jors, followed by the new center of viewers ' atten- tion - Loni Anderson. Movies experienced a big boom in attendance due to some masterful performances by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky I and 11 , the Paul Newman and Robert Redofrd combo in Butch Cassidy and The Sting and the unforgetable John Belu- shi in Animal House. Leonard Nimoy brought his memorable role as Mister Spock to the silver screen, and Steve Martin wowed audiences on tour, on television, and in his movie The Jerk. Perhaps the best loved characters to come to movieland, however, were R2 D2 and C3PO from Star Wars who clanked their way into our memories - and our hearts. 167

POLITICS The political climate oi the 70 ' s will long be remembered. A peanut farmer from Georgia won the 1976 Presidential election, and was caught on camera talcing a break in good ole boy style at brother Billy ' s gas station. Nixon resigned in disgrace following the Watergate scandal; Spiro Agnew also left office under less than favorable circumstances. In 1973 the televised heanngs of the Senate Watergate Committee transfixed the nation. On the international scene, Idi Amin, fanatic ruler of Uganda, was over - run by Tanzanian forces. Aleksander Solzhenitsyn dared to criticize Russia - and then turned his eye on America. The Shah was ousted from Iran, and took up temporary residence in New York City Hospital. Kissinger hit the road, at home and abroad, to plug his latest literary effort. The White House Years. Closer to home, Bert Lance awaits trial for questionnable financial dealings dating from his tenure at the Bank of Georgia. Mohammed Ah left the ring and was last seen in China promoting american goodwill to our newest allies. But perhaps the most memorable event in the 70 ' s was the visit of Pope John Paul II to America. He is the first pxintiff to ever set fcxit on american soil, and he has left with us a lasting impression. 168
