SPORTS The main spoils events of the 70s were dominated more by league and team actions than the usual player accomplishments. The finalization of the AFL • NFL merger created two conferences and led to our present playoff format. Pittsburgh ' s four super bowl victories and Miami ' s perfect 17 - 0 season left tough acts for future teams to follow. HOCKEY ' S BEST: Capturing two Stanley Cups - ' 70, ' 72, and becoming the decade ' s most awesome team in ' 71; the Bruins set the pace for the next twenty years. BASKETBALL: The Celtics as usual were No. 1, but due to John Y. Brown handing away three top players for Bob MaCadoo, the team lost much momentum, rallying in ' 79 they came back to true form. BASEBALL: The Red Sox astounded everyone by setting countless records. Carlton Fiske ' s sixth game homer in the 1975 world series astounded millions. But, probably the clincher was Yaz ' s 400th homer. The team itself had most of its punch in 1977 only to lose it in 1978. All in all it was a decade of ups and downs. 165

PEOPLE Many unique people made the 70 ' s a memorable decade. In music, we saw the rise of Donna Sum- mer and the Village People on the disco scene. Peter Frampton and Kiss hit the top of the rock charts, and Blondie made its mark on the new wave music. John Travolta and Olivia Newton ' - lohn took us back to good old rock and roll in Grease. Television, that vast wasteland, was dominated by the presence of the original Angels - Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett - Ma- jors, followed by the new center of viewers ' atten- tion - Loni Anderson. Movies experienced a big boom in attendance due to some masterful performances by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky I and 11 , the Paul Newman and Robert Redofrd combo in Butch Cassidy and The Sting and the unforgetable John Belu- shi in Animal House. Leonard Nimoy brought his memorable role as Mister Spock to the silver screen, and Steve Martin wowed audiences on tour, on television, and in his movie The Jerk. Perhaps the best loved characters to come to movieland, however, were R2 D2 and C3PO from Star Wars who clanked their way into our memories - and our hearts. 167
