FADS The 70s = A time to be remembered. It was a decade when one fad supplanted another with machine gun rapidity. It was a decade of roller skates and roller disco; an era of pocket calculators and Japanese imports. Girls were clad in designer jeans, down vests, and cowboy boots, or in nothing at all as they relaxed in a hot tub. People travelled the roads on skate boards, and the skies in hang gliders, and talked to their house plants as they created frozen yogurt in their food processors, while looking to their digital watches. Tee shirts and backpacking achieved great popularity, as did wood stoves and the macho male. Vans travelled the highways plastered with bumper stickers and fully equipped with C.B. ' s and Fuzz-busters. Cassette recorders were in evidence at tanning centers across the country. People were torn between eating pop rocks and caring for pet rocks. Streaking; the most popular sport of the early seventies, gave way to tennis and jogging later in the decade. Adidas and Nike vied for top spot in shoeing the participants, and Busch beer and Perrier Water vied for their thirst. FADS ■ They helped us make it through the turbulent decade of the 70 ' s. 164

SPORTS The main spoils events of the 70s were dominated more by league and team actions than the usual player accomplishments. The finalization of the AFL • NFL merger created two conferences and led to our present playoff format. Pittsburgh ' s four super bowl victories and Miami ' s perfect 17 - 0 season left tough acts for future teams to follow. HOCKEY ' S BEST: Capturing two Stanley Cups - ' 70, ' 72, and becoming the decade ' s most awesome team in ' 71; the Bruins set the pace for the next twenty years. BASKETBALL: The Celtics as usual were No. 1, but due to John Y. Brown handing away three top players for Bob MaCadoo, the team lost much momentum, rallying in ' 79 they came back to true form. BASEBALL: The Red Sox astounded everyone by setting countless records. Carlton Fiske ' s sixth game homer in the 1975 world series astounded millions. But, probably the clincher was Yaz ' s 400th homer. The team itself had most of its punch in 1977 only to lose it in 1978. All in all it was a decade of ups and downs. 165
