PAXTON HIGH SCHOOL 700 WEST ORLEANS STREET PAXTON, ILLINOIS 60957 Looking Good together Looking Good. Looking Good Looking Good together Looking Good. Looking Good Good times to share Good friends were there You and PHS-were Looking Good! Everybody likes to look good. We all spend a lot of time each day trying to make ourselves look good. How we look reflects what other people think of us and how we feel about ourselves. The 1980 Reflector staff has chosen the Looking Good theme from CBS television to help reflect those things that have made you and PHS look good throughout the 1980-81 school year. The Reflector staff has worked very hard to put together an enjoyable yearbook this year. We hope that our yearbook demonstrates the Looking Good image. Through all of the memories of good times and good friends illustrated by this book, we hope that in later years we can look back fondly of the time when we were all Looking Good. 2 «k 4 TOGETHER 17 ACTIVITIES 25 ORGANIZATIONS 47 CLASS OF ’81 69 UNDERCLASS PHOTOS 70 CLASS OF ’82 76 CLASS OF ’83 82 CLASS OF ’84 89 SPORTS 111 FACULTY 118 INDEX SPIRIT AT PHS Luis showing one of the many uses of his hands. AMERICAN FIELD LAURA CASTILLO Speaking at the Homecoming as- A member of the Homecoming sembly. court. When I came last year. I didn't know what I could get from this experience. I spent my first months trying to communicate with the people. Using sign language or my dictionary just to get others to understand. I have begun to understand and be understood by others. I clearly remember my first days in the United States, everything was confusing for me. new people, new customs, everything was new. But I will never forget my first days at PHS. I couldn't open my locker. I couldn't find my classes. I didn’t know where I had to go. I couldn’t remember or pronounce names, but I wasn’t afraid or worried because there was always somebody who helped me. I have enjoyed the school activities in which I’ve been participating. like Student Council. Mental Health Club. AFS. club NHS. Pom Pon girls and the Track Team. Also I enjoyed watching the football games which I had never seen before. Volleyball games (Always remember Vamos Paxton!!!) and the basketball games too. Being a member of the Homecoming court was and will be a very special memory for me. (Thanks) Prom was fun, and something different, hard to forget. I wish the next students have as wonderful experience as I’ve had. I want to thank all those persons that in one way or another have helped me. To my teachers, my friends. PHS, to the whole town of Paxton, and especially my family. This has been a great and wonderful year. And I hope someday I can return you everthing gave me during my stay here. SERVICE STUDENTS ELMAR LANDOLT Elmar relaxes in the library. Elmar PIGS OUT! A dazzling ULTRA-BRITE smile. A face of satisfaction. Looking back at my AFS year in Paxton. I certainly can say that my stay has been a very valuable and unforgettable experience in my life. My host-family, the students and teachers from PHS and the people from Paxton in general helped me a great deal to realize and understand new perpectives and opinions in a different culture. I want to thank you all for this essential aid and for your extraordinary hospitality. More specifically speaking. I especially enjoyed all the sports activities offered in Paxton High School. Moreover, I was very surprised and delighted to observe how personal and informal the academical climate in PHS is. It is very nice to have friends among teachers who do more than just selectively educate pupils. Friends often ask me if I’m glad to get home again. I have mixed feelings about my departure. Of course, I’m looking forward to leaving and seeing my friends and family again. But on the other hand, I resent to leave all the people I love here in Paxton. I hope you will get the chance to come to Switzerland some day. I'll be glad to return your helpfulness. 23 NEW THINGS AT PHS Gourmet lunch. Paxton High School' first musical production in many years premiered April 25 and 26. 1981. The cast of Dames at Sea” included Lynette Hinrichs as Ruby, a small town girl from Utah; Luis Anda. as Dick, a sailor-music writer fell in love with Rubys Evelyn Foellner. as Mona, the star that demanded everything her way Angie Hofer as Joan, a chorus girl who took Ruby under her wings; Tim Sheehan as Lucky, a flamboyant sailor who fell for Joan; John Kessler as Hennessy. the stage manager and director; Jeff Arends as the captain: and the chorus; Carol Peers as Bubbles. Vicki Amsden as Ginger, and Kathy Eyre as Trixie. Dames at Sea” was a light musical-comedy in the 1930’s tradition: melodic songs, dancing, and a heart-warming plot that never got too serious. The play begins in an old theatre in New York. Young Ruby arrives from Centerville. Utah wanting to become a Broadway star. She lands a chorus line job. only to find that the show will close, unless her boyfriend. Dick, can locate a place to perform the musical. But of course he found a place — Aboard the U.S.S. Mona, a battleship. The play cast and the crew really met the challenge. The cast learned to tap dance in the period of only five weeks, while the crew constructed a thirty-five foot battleship in three weeks. Musical director for the show as Miss Oncken. art director was Mr. Daro, and technical director was Mr. Shields. Mr. Wolfe and Kathy Guthrie provided additional music. The assistant dirctor was Gigi Gantter. Choreography was by Carol Peers and Lynn Hylbert. First Row: Angie Hofer. Kari Kelley. Kathy Griffin. Patti Frichtl. Pam Lindauer. Ann Henderson. The 80-81 Reflector staff broke” tradition by changing the format of the book. This book includes all the events of the 1980-81 school year and consequently was not delivered until August. We changed publishing companies and were able to add some different techniques. Some of these techniques included visual effects such as color, black and gray pages, spot color, and white print. Also included was a bigger senior section and sports section and more informal pictures. We hope you appreciate the hard work that was done to produce this book. Our editor at work. First Row-. This year, they were especially busy, as they were asked to sing for various clubs and church organizations in the community. During the Christmas season, the Naturals, and other girls in Chorus, went Christmas caroling to help spread the joys of the holiday season. NATURALS: Vicki Amsden. Connie Pilcher. Evelyn Foellner. None of us will forget the never ending bus rides; the seemingly hour upon hour waiting for results; wading knee deep in the mud at E.I.U.; the cyclonic winds at I.S.U.; Evening Good;' the re-run in Danville when the music sounded slightly familiar; Get up for it: the togetherness of dressing in co-ed buses; Satans burning furnace in Springfield: fainting when you couldn’t take the heat; bundling up in blankets to keep warm; the thrill and excitement of winning; and also the sadness and disappointment of defeat. The Pep Band did an outstanding job this year of providing entertainment. We played for both boys and girls basketball games, pep assemblies, and every night during the boys regional basketball tournament. Alot of hard work, dedication, and good attitudes went into making this year the successful learning experience it has been. One could say that we became one big family with Mr. Wolfe and Sherrie as our parents- complete with family arguments, group discussions, and most importantly, the caring and understanding that flows between it members. 41 RIFLES: Cindy Rackley. The team put in a lot of hard work, but also had a lot of fun. The Drill Team performed at the boy's basketball home games and some girl's basketball home games. The team was formed and coached by Joe and Sherri Wolfe, both demonstrated quite a bit of talent and patience. This year went well for them and let's hope they continue the tradition. A champagne brunch was held earlier at the Arcade Cafe. Teri Seaman, celebrating her 26th year of service to the Arcade, served as the hostess. Teresa Combs, owner of the Arcade, also served as hostess. Linn Davis. taking over the role of Dot Foster, took attendance and found that Pam Bollinger and Rhonda Lut-trell were absent. The current Miss Universe, Vicki Amsden. who has recently been touring South Africa, arrived with Gloria Fillinger. her I st runner up. Mr. Jeanine Lehrman. the former Luis Anda. accompanied the two ladies as Mr. Universe. On the same note. Mo Knell has become the Dairy Queen of the state of Illinois. Sitting on the bar stools at the lunch counter were Kim and Patti Frichtl discussing the renovation of their bar. The Keg O’Fun” located in Dallas. Texas. Their bouncer. Dave Waller, also was in attendance. At the opposite end of the room. Mr. Jim Engdahl and his wife, the former Tamis Coady. were discussing the consolidation of their new gas company formerly owned by Tamis' grandfather and known as Flicks, which has now become Hick — E's. In one corner of the room was Kathy Eyre, the heavyweight champion mud wrestler of the world weighing in at 300 pounds. Her opponent, in the opposite corner of the room, is Pam Lin-dauer. who is currently preparing for her nationally televised bout with Miss Eyre. The party really got rolling when lead guitarist. Rob Noble began accompanying his Foos-land Band. As the music began. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Evelyn Foellner kicked up her heels and began her latest routine. Well-known comedian Dave Withers also helped provide entertainment by performing some of his chipmunk imitations. Things really got rolling when Ted Nugent's lead singer. Lisa Shaffer and AC DC's lead singer Priscilla Canavan Canavan chimed in. Just as the party got rolling. Patty Kil-lingsworth rode through the cafe on her moped. Patty has been touring the U.S. on her moped ever since graduation in 1981. As Patty ripped through the crowd, she didn't see Peggy Wood and ran her down. Miss Wood has become partially invisible from using too much Porcelana while trying to fade her freckles. No one recognized Connie Pilcher. A few years after graduation. Connie took a teaching job in the South. Due to over-exposure to the sun. Connie has taken to eating grits, chittlins. and watermelon. Sitting at the farmer’s table in the middle of the room was hog farmer Dennis Flerges. A few weeks before the reunion. Dennis attended a swine convention in Iowa where he met his wife, the former Miss Piggy. Also sitting at the farmer’s table was Jeff Ru-barts and his wife, Sandy Burk-lund Rubarts. The Rubarts' live on a rhubarb farm in southern Illinois where they raise little Rhubarbs! Tobacco farmer, Dave Beck was also conversing with the other farmers. Dave couldn't stay at the reunion very long because he had to get back to his fields in Tennessee . . he needed a chew! Jeff Birkey. owner of John Deere Farm Machinery, was trying to promote his machinery to the crowd. Mike grow only one crop but refused to reveal it’s nature. Todd Whitaker seemed very interested in Mike's farm. You see. Todd is in charge of supplying the props for Cheech 6 Chong's next movie. Mayor of Paxton. Jim Levitt. and President of the United States. Randy McIntyre, were having a heated debate in one of the booth seats. Mrs. Cheryl Ronna Frichtl and her husband Jerry, mayor and first lady of Dogtown. calmed them down before a fight broke out. Members of the class decided that it was time to move the party to the Gateway Inn where everyone could swim, play tennis, or use any of the other recreational facilities that the Gateway inn provides. As everyone arrived, they found numerous flower arrangements delivered by Flower Cart owner Jenny Curtis. Jenny, however, was unable to attend because she recently became the Rosebowl Queen and she was scheduled to appear in the parade on the same day as the reunion. As everyone arrived, a great feast was brought out by Kathy Glazik. who now owns a chain of restaurants all over the country called Kathy's Bar 6 Grill. The first one in the swimming pool was Martie Punke. who recently won the National T-Shirt Contest. She was wearing her original winning t-shirt when she jumped in. Greg Swenson was unable to attend because Ford County Sheriff Mike Gustafson and his Deputy Louis Sanders reported arresting Greg for flashing at the Senior Citizen's Picnic held at Pells Park. Our own Miss Cindy Scott is still attending college. She started out at Eastern but transferred to the U of I where she became the 60 President of her soririty Imma Gonna Whinna.” On the motel bulletin board were a few notices written to the Class of 1981. One of them read: Diane Riggleman has recently had to vacate her home due to a pet invasion. If anyone has a home for Diane, please notify the Humane Society, which is now operated by Kathy Griffin. Kathy has taken it upon herself to be sure that no stray animals ever roam the streets of Paxton again. There was also a note on the bulletin board from Shirley Fields saying that she was sorry that she couldn't attend since she was too busy with her classes at Parkland. Ron Hanson also posted an ad for his home foamers operation. A notice was also put up that at 3:00 PM Rob Dargan would be giving rides on his McDonald Land Train. Rob can be seen on various McDonald’s commercials with Ronald McDonald. Speaking of stars. Rick Evans has become the understudy of Richie Cunningham on Happy Days.” Laura Castillo has married Tattoo on Fantasy Island”. They are now living on the island raising little Tat-tootlesl Laura flew back to the U.S. just for the reunion and with her came Elmar Landolt. Elmar has become a famous chocolate heir after marrying a Swiss Miss. The Class of 1981 has turned out quite a few of celebrities. One being Dave Kneuppel who has tattooed his whole body and has been seen on That's Incredible.” Ann Henderson has starred on Saturday Night Live but is still trying to figure out the last joke told to her on graduation night. June 5, 1981. Another star. Dollie Annette French is now starring in her own broadway hit. Hello Dolly.” As the day moved on, the party began booming. Evil Kneivel. Keith Messer rode up on his evil motorcycle. Keith is going to try to break Fonzi’s record of jumping 50 trash cans. Keith’s motorcycle aroused Sandy Garrett's interest since Sandy has become a fashion designer for motorcycle mommas. Bob Newsom, who has been married and divorced from Linn Davis 13 times, also took an interest in Keith’s motorcycle because Bobby supplies the cycles for Sandy's business. The Class of 1981 has also turned out some big business executives. For instance. Mike Branham has built his own t-shirt factory. Mike reportedly said that business is really hot.” Lewis Brown has his own Corvette dealership but unfortunately he still has to be in at 10:00. Tami Houston has inherited her father’s plumbing business and Angie Owens has become the smallest woman in the largest corporation in the world. Lynette Hinrichs has worked her way up to become president of the Loda Poultry Co. She’s now sitting on her nest! Therese Popel has inherited her father's fertilizer company and is still spreading it on thick. Suzie Mariar has her own beauty salon. Her salon has become famous because it consists of eleven floors. Each floor has a specific purpose, the top floor of course, is hair coloring. Julie Mason owns the largest drug store in Illinois. Ever since graduation. Kari Kelley has been searching for her real roots. This year she brought the good news that she has finally found them with the Kelly's Potato Chip man. Mitch McClure has become quite famous, for he has been chosen to be the first nude torch bearer for the 2006 Olympics. His brother Matt McClure, is running in the Olympics, however, he is running unopposed since his race has become boycotted. Our reunion also marked a very special occasion for one of our classmates. Mrs. Sandy Briggs was celebrating her 26th wedding anniversary. Kathy Glazik baked her a cake and Steve Wool ridge who has now settled in Jonestown. supplied the Kool-Aid. In fact. Steve had his own little Kool-Aid stand set up right in the entrance way of the motel. Angie Hofer tried to attend the reunion but she was lynched because she had still not published our Senior yearbook. Also unable to attend was Larry Price was busy trying to set a new world's record for dragging main. Marylin Dover could only stay at the reunion for a little while because she is still attending Day Care. She just can't seem to pry away. Cindy Yates was seen handing out copies of Teen Magazine. At age 38. Cindy is still modeling for Teen. Yvette Yanders is really into fitness. She’s urging all the class members to run laps, do sit-ups. and any other exercizes. Remember how well she used to love P.E. in high school? Blaine Schwartz was unable to make the trip to the U.S. You see. Blaine has become a monk in a Monestary in Turkey. As the day comes to an end. we see Chuck Richmond fishing in the swimming pool. Chuck has become a rival to Virgil Ward. In fact. Chuck now has his own T.V. show weekdays at 3:00 on Channel 37. As the day comes to an end. the crowd thins out and the members of the Class of 1981 go back to their home, again going their seperate ways until their next reunion. 61 LOOKING GOOD IN THE 1960’S. I.
