The primary duty of any medical department afloat is to keep as many men at their stations as is possible. In addition, it assures continuous programs of proper sanitation and xaccident prevention. And, on a ship like the Paul Revere, which is regularly scheduled for WestPac cruises, it is responsible for the administering of the necessary shots to all hands, which always seems to boost the popular- ity of Sick Bay. During this WestPac cruise there have fortunately had no major medical prob- lems. After the excitement of one appen- dectomy, performed on the Way westward, a pattern of routine cases was established. The highlight of the cruise for the medical department was the participation of several corpsmen and the medical officer in offering medical aid to the natives of small Philippine villages around Subic Bay following a severe flood caused by record rains during the summer rainy season.
