O Clipper of Patterson, To unknown lands beckoning to youth of tomorrow. Past shores of endeavor and high resolve, carefully avoiding the shoals of uncertainty, our ship has at long last reached the port where We will have the opportunity to use what we have learned at Patterson. Our slogan, Avanti, with deeds and not words, has been our guide for the duties that we are about to perform Service to Cod, country, and humanity has been our aim in all our undertakings for a better today and an even better tomorrow. This book, therefore, has been prepared to help us recall the memories and inspirations that have helped us to mark an important milestone in our lives and another successful voyage for our faithful Clipper. After chaos will come peaceg after confusion will come orderg after terror will come serenity. A great task lies before those who will undertake to keep the flag of freedom proudly flying- the children of today. These speedy, small, tall-masted privateers, slick and slim, whose light hulk rode low in the water- . . . brought the cargoes of their day From the ports of seven oceans, homing White-winged up the bay. As time went on, there flourished along the Chesapeake Bay numerous shipyards, which turned out yearly many iine vessels. One of the most famous of the shipping merchants was William Patterson, a philanthropist who devoted much time and money to help make Baltimore a place of beauty. Among his countless gifts to the citizens was Patterson Park which was a century later destined to provide the excellent background for our school. Although the picturesque clippers sail no longer into Baltimore's modernized harbor, we can readily appreciate the inherent interest that justifies us in engraving the Baltimore Clipper on our school rings to represent Patterson's graduates. The well-shaped hull signifies the spirit of brotherhood that exists among all Pattersonians, the graceful sails and hardy rigging imply the pioneering principle which the clipper and our graduates have in common. The clipper carried on until it was recognized in the worldg Patterson's graduates are prepared to follow in its wake. Let the emblem of the clipper inspire us as we look at the rings on our lingers. Let us visualize an outgoing vessel bound for distant ports, with sails set and billowing in the wind, over whose decks and up whose ladders swarm sailors of every nationality, symbolic of the melting pot that is America. Let us, like the clipper, slip out to perform successfully the duties and tasks that await us in the world. In times of distress, as bewildered sophomores or discouraged juniors, we sought aid in the mature wisdom of her judgment. We regret deeply that circumstances arose to prevent our original captain from guiding us through the last lap of the course. We shall cherish always the memory of the many happy moments shared working under her leadership. She is the oilicial translator into singable English of the national anthems of North, Central, and South America. These translations are constantly consulted in the Library of Congress and used wherever Spanish is taught or spoken in Washington, D. C., and we are proud to be associated with her. First War Emergency Classes ln the rush of the eyentful year of 1942 came an ernergency call tor an increased nurnhcr of high school graduates. Students at Patterson who had successfully completed their lirst eleyen years were giyen an opportunity to serye their country through an accelerated course of study in high school and at sunnner school. lfiye students, hy rneans of this course, completed their high school education Frye 1no11ths ahead of time in Septeinher, l9-12. POTOCK1 November 11, 1924-November, 1942 Ted enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen and received his training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He visited his home for the last time on Mother's Day, May, 1942, before going overseas. Months passed. Armistice Day, his birthday, came and went, then his mother was informed by the Navy Department that her son had been killed in action while bravely Fighting against the invasion of Guadalcanal. XVe are proud of Ted, the First Pattersonite to die in action, a member of the Class of lune '43. X' 0 wh sewn ' Z N ,X 5 We is 43 History of February Class The class of February '43 has sailed aboard the Clipper Ship for the past four short years. And they have been short years. To freshmen the day of graduation seems somewhere off in eternity. Yet as we look back over our well- worn log, it seems that just yesterday we too were only beginners. It was then we realized that we were a class, united in our purposes and strong as long as we pulled together. Our earliest recollections are of such events as our first Class Day, the Christmas dance of December '40, and the boat ride of june '41. Oh, yes, that boat ride! It poured all day and continued to rain until the boat docked in Baltimore at nine that night. The girls' hair came down, and the boys laughed, but everyone had fun. There were more dances, and a wienie roast in November. This was the enjoyable part of our school life, there were responsibilities, too. We take pride in the fact that we have several iirsts to add to Patterson's traditions. We were the first to organize a SERVICE FOR SCHOLARSHIP so that we could leave the school something besides our memory. The boys washed cars, ran errands, one evcn minded a baby, the girls knitted and sewed and cooked to raise money for the fund. For the first time the scholarship fund has been raised through the work of our own hands, our service to others. VV e were also the first to hold a Iunior Prom in collaboration with the lune class of '43. We have contributed to Patters0n's war effort, too, by being among top purchasers of war bonds and stamps. Most of us enlisted in the Victory Corps, and twenty were selected to be charter members. Our class also claims the sports' spotlight. In the football field we have Captain Bill Anderson, who made the all-Maryland hrst string center. Al Malone, our president, loseph Zebec, Earl Brannan, Howard Schaefer, and Otts Nardone did their part to make our season as successful as it was. Our boys have starred on the soccer, baseball, wrestling, and softball teams. Forty-three's sportsminded girls brought us fame when the hockey team won Baltimore City Championship. Special honors go to Naomi Koehler, Lucille Salla, and Dorothy Ricko for a job well done. Scholarship, the ideal for which every class strives hardest, has not been overlooked. Emilie Rys captured the hrst prize in the National Defense Essay Contest conducted throughout the city last Iune. And now that our four-year cruise is ended, the entire February class of '43 wishes to thank our two pilots who have worked hard to keep our compass always pointing toward the goals of friendship, loyalty, and honor. fh. 5:1 X 5? Fishbein, presenting to the school assembly on December 4, 1941, a one-act eomedv. The play Ullow Vulgarln centers about the hilarious antics of the Craig familv and their new maid, Ada, who endeavors to bring the Craigs up to the social standards of her former employers. the Van llornlevs. Mrs. Craig and Barbara are of the opinion that Ada is the aeme of reiinementg to Mr. Craig, Tommy, and Ned, Barbarals fiance, she is just a plain nuisance. The Craigs have entered a newspaper contest and are forced to tax their efforts to the utmost to prevent Ada from discovering this fact as they are afraid that she would not approve. Emilie Rys Broken Dishes Dishes were broken this year at Patterson, but the incident made us roar instead of cry, for we were witnessing our annual play, Broken Dishes, presented by the Patterson Playshop under the direction of Mr. Fishbein. The action takes place in the Bumpstead home in a small mid-western town. Cyrus Bumpstead is an example of monumental patience and good nature. Despite the continued bickering of his wife and elder daughters, his temper remains unrufiied. He is a man whose desire for peace and willingness to do good to others have been mistaken for weakness by all excepting his loving daughter Elaine. Elaine's secret meetings with 'Bill Clark, a grocery clerk, provide the play with a romantic touch. Cyrus's good nature is further encroached upon by his wife's constant comparison of him with Chester Armstrong, her childhood sweetheart. It turns out that Chester, the get-rich-quick type, has spent much of his life behind bars. By some strange coincidence he happens into the Bumpstead abode. Finally Cyrus is faced with the opportunity to collect ten thousand dollars' reward by exposing Chester, but decides against it to prevent Mrs. Bumpstead's disillusiomnent. Myra and Mabel, two spinsters, inject much humor into this three-act play and Parson Stump causes many to roll in the aisles. The play ends with an indication of future respect for Cyrus. Victory Corps The United States Government issued a plea to America's high-school youth throughout our country to unite. Taking the challenge, young America, under school authority, has formed a gigantic nation-wide network of willing workers known as the Victory Corps. Patterson, like other Baltimore high schools, stepped right ahead. Specific plans were approved by the Victory Corps Council and the Patterson Service and Varsity Clubs. Charter members were taken from these two student service organizations. Initial applications for membership are thoroughly checked before the applicant may take the Victory Corps' oath of allegiance: I pledge myself to be worthy of wearing the Insignia of the Victory Corps, to serve my community and my country to the best of my ability, and to prepare myself for future war service. I make this pledge that my country and the United Nations shall win this war. Each member, three months after taking this oath, is privileged to select one of the major divisions-Community, Air, Sea, Land, or Production Service. Before and after school courses are sponsored in Aeronautics, Blue Print Reading, Camouflage, Canteen Service, Civilian Defense Code, Emergency Office Work, Emergency Telephone Gperating, Meteorology, Nursing, Payroll, and Income Tax Instruction, Target Practice, and U.S.O. Nlatehes are held with out-of-town teams by mail. The girls are taught good sportsmanship and safety in handling rifles. BOYS' BASKETBALL Patterson's eagers displayed all tl1c qualities of a champion- ship teanr as they downed nearly eyery opponent they met. Losing only three games, two to City and one to Southern, the boys placed second in the HA Conference, and Mr. Lee's debut as coach of the Patterson quints was most successful. Much of the material is green, but from our previous records on the diamond we feel that the team will measure up to all expectations. The boys are high-spirited and are training conscientiously. Mr. Irlasselbach, the coach, is confident of the outcome. VARSITY TRACK The Varsity Track team. coached by Mr. Mueller, is a wellfrounded squad, carrying seycral outstanding performers. This new era was to be one of service-to country, allies, community, and fellowmen. With this idea the Service for Scholarship Bureau was founded at Patterson by the February Class of 1943 under the guidance of its faculty adviser, Mrs. Silverton. The purpose of the organization was two-fold: first, each member offered his services for such jobs as washing cars, minding babies, sewing, typing, Bling-anything that would help free war workers or busy housewives for more important tasks, second, from his earnings he was to contribute at least one dollar to the scholarship fund. Taking a deep breath and rolling up his sleeves, each student pitched in to make the movement a success. The sight of young men, attired in sneakers and sweaters, dexterously scrubbing an auto wheel or applying a smooth polish to a muddy fender was not uncommon. Corridor conversations ran something like this: I just received another order for fudge. Have you delivered today's? As soon as you have finished hemming those pillow cases, please send them to me. Where were you last night when I phoned? At Mrs. Iones's minding the baby? Oh, that's right. There was a Red Cross meeting. Money began to pour into the hands of Vice-President Harold Iones. At the Farewell Assembly as the check for seventy-five dollars was handed to Mr. Clark for the Scholarship fund, the entire class had the great satisfaction of knowing not only that its tiny contribution would help some worthy student go to college, but also that in earning the money each one had in some small way been of service. -all f Af' 1412: TJX June '43 Looks to the Future lust as the framed facsimile copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America already presented to Patterson by the Class of Iune '43 declare our devotion to our country, even so our gift of one thousand one dollars for the purchase of scholarship awards to be given at each commencement declares our interest in education. How was this money secured? The answer is a very simple one. Every student of the Iune Class of '43 has had a hand in this plan for the future. Through our enjoyment of the Patriotic Pageant and our frolics at numerous parties and activities, we have built this fund. Even the hardships of the rationing program were an innocent aid to us, for the students saved a little more of their already carefully-guarded sugar, made it into delicious candy, and sold it for the fund. Many allowances were affected by the Green and Gold's worthy drive. Some of our members, working in the summer and at Christmas, contributed their hard-earned money to the cause. The selling of Christmas cards swelled our sum considerably. Generosity on the part of our students and work on the part of our faculty adviser have brought results. This Class of Iune '43 fund has already made possible the awarding of medals at five of our commencements and in the future will keep alive the memory of Iune '43. 78 I They're Our Boys, Too I Boys of Patterson now serving your country in the armed forces, your school is behind you one hundred per cent with the prayer for a decisive victory and peace which will bring you home to all you love. Whether called after finishing or' leaving school or while in school, you are still a part of Patterson, and Patterson is still a part of you. The blue and white is now blue, white, and red- red for courage and determination. But the motto is still the same, for it is a personal one.
