AVING successfully completed our four years of high school, we are now going forth to assume new re- sponsibilities as citizens of the United States, a country dedicated to the three great freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. The theme of our yearbook, patriotism, is a timely subject, especially reflective of the emotional tone of the year 1942. As We look through the pages one month, one year, or twenty-five years hence, they will not lose their brilliance or pale, because love and respect for the principles upon which this country was founded are the very spirit of the book. ..f' 2 41 1 f -5Q15i1+'f 3531124 1- ' , ' an 'V' . T0 THIS YOUTH, WHOSE HIGH IDEALS AND PATRIOTIC ENTHUsIAsM ARE MAKING FOR A BETTER AMERICA, WE DEDICATE THE PATTERSON CLIPPER OF 1942. B 4 . V mi 91 A, If nn, .mugs V 4 dmlfanma is 5 -, ' 'J Patterson Clipper . . . EVER forward to meet the challenge of mapless seas and remote shores did the daring Clipper ships of yesterday set sail, stirring the heart of the American people with a spirit of pioneer heroism. We of Baltimore are particuarly proud that our harbor offered a homing haven to them. For many years Baltimore gloried in the splendor of their spreading canvas and sturdy hulls. Today, thanks to these pioneers of the deep, we rank second along the Atlantic seaboard. Among those to whom our gratitude can never be fully expressed is William Patterson, a philanthropist, who strove tirelessly for Baltimore's growth. He was the man who so generously bequeathed Patterson Park to further beautify and develop Baltimore, in respectful tribute, our own school was named after him. We are proud to wear the symbol of the Clipper ship on our rings and bear the memorial name of Patterson, for behind both there is a meaning - deep, sincere, and significant. f'?u'93f 5E W 41,44 , kv 'Wx 'Q J s E34 ,gm , -AQ igfgfhmlik vi - mm. -ww . f 3V'A, , ,.-' Q -11 NY Ss wiv ,XL X X fr' Ax X. .vgmwl AM The Classes of February and June, 1942 are fortunate in having had such able advisers as Miss Ursula Reese and Mrs. Craee Evelyn Rohr. Quite often now we think of him, And grief and pain impend. Quite often now our eyes grow dim- Our tribute to a friend. I Believe I believe in loyalty to God and country, too, To freedom and the starry Hag which for that country flew O'er harassed men, hard pressed, who died for liberty, Who'd give again their very lives to keep their country free. I believe in leaders, noble, true, and bold, With records that surpass the deeds of armored knights of old, In men like Lincoln, Wilson, Washington, and Lee, In the records of the gallant, a thousand more I see- Men who gave us service with eagerness and zeal, Men who never feared to place their shoulders to the wheel. I believe in justice, equality, and law, In truthfulness and honor, in peace without a flaw. I believe in America, the symbol of these rights, A nation out of many, risen to great heights, Where men may worship as they please, where sacred love abounds, Where peace and joy walk hand in hand, where freedom's music sounds, Where the benefits of democracy are here for me to receive, Where every man is my comrade and believes as I believe. Why, it is November 28, 1941. Patterson has just presented another successful senior play. For weeks signs could be seen displayed over the entire school to announce the annual senior play. lts tricky title, 6'Wait for Mef, was on the tip of the tongue of every student. Everyone was looking forward to the big night. 'gWait for Mef' a three act comedy, centers about the marriage of the adopted niece of Victoria Van Tuyl, Eve Trimble. Pretentious, complaining old Miss Van Tuyl wishes Eve to marry one man, while the poor niece is in love with another. ln the interim, Ronnie Van Tuyl, Eve's intended husband, marries without the knowledge of his aunt. Unaware' of this, Victoria only adds to the complications by insisting that Eve marry Ronnie. The two young people, fearing they will bring on another of Aunt Victoriais heart attacks by telling her that they are not in love with each other, keep their silence. Fortunately, events take a turn for the better and everyone is happy at the outcome of the triangle. An old woman pretending to have heart trouble, a stuttering character, and complicated romances add humor to Wait for Mef' The final production revealed the line talent of the characters, the wisdom of its directors, and the time and effort put into the play. Nicholas Jerosimich The Cast of c'Wait for Me If HTHE PROFESSOR ROARSi' DURING the frosty winter of 1939, the February Class of 1942 decided to make its debut over the footlights. The classis war whoop was MDe Play's De Tingli' and so, the HCreen and Whitersl' chose HThe Professor Roarsw by Betty Smith and Robert Finch. Before the one-act comedy was produced, the professor was assisted in the roaring by the whole cast as well as the director, Miss Whelarl, On that gloomy, rainy Thursday morning of March 14, 1940, the cast, consisting of Sam Mosca as the professor, Catherine Flezanis as his wife, Mindel Seltzer as the old aunt, and Lillian Heymann and La Rue Elliott as two beautiful college girls, went into action and, believe it or not, the play was a uboomingw success on Broadway, or rather Pratt Street! It might have been that Professor lVlosca stuck his head in a wastepaper basket and had difficulty removing it, or it might have been the two beautiful college girls or even the timid little wife that Hboughtv the audience! Whatever it was, the February Class of 1942 had a memorable Hconiing outw event with MThe Professor Roarsfi Zurfzzin Flay. .. EL1VIER ON May 29 and June 23, 1941, the June Class of 1942 presented a one-act play entitled ulSlIllSI'.,-I lt was a story of how Elmer Collier got along in a house filled with women, namely, his mother with whom he never agreed, his favorite sister, Susan, and his hated sisters, Janie and Jeanie. The action started when Elmer, in a desperate effort to stop Janie from wearing Susanis new evening coat, hid it and began a search for the uburgularf, Aiding in this man-hunt were the dress- maker, Miss Pinney, the colored maid, Fannie Belle, Janiels friend, Hubert Brown, and Hubert's friend, Russel Jameson. Finally Janie was thwarted in her plan to wear the new wrap, and Elmer won his mother over to his side. Elmer Collier, ................ N icholas Jerosimich All heaven opened its doors and poured forth torrents of rain the night of February 6, 1942. What night was this? Why. the night of nightsw-the February prom. With umbrellas hohliing and sweeping skirts lifted, festiyely dressed couples were seen dashing from cars to the gaily lighted haven. Levering Hall. Wcmuld a little thing like rain dismay them? Of course not. Even slightly straight hair and creaseless pants could not dampen the spirits of the fun-lox ing graduates. As they stepped into the great doorway, they were greeted with the sweet syncopation of Charlie Vineent's Orchestra. Sparkling music set toes a-twinkling. A crackling fire hlazed forth its comforting warmth and toasted the congenial feelings of every one to a pleasing eoziness. Then came the greatest event of the evening-the Prome- nade. All the tuxedoed young gentlemen and their heautifully gowned maidens fair marched up to receive their favors. g'0h's and 'cAh'si' could be heard from all directions as the surprises were viewed. ln the wee small hours of the morning, between the rain- drops. tired. but delightfully happy couples found their way to their cars to go home and dream of the never-to-be-forgotten allair. Each season for as long as the team has been in soft- ball competition, it has either won or tied for the championship. Miss Liebmann is the coach. Buwlinq Teams For the past four years the Varsity Bowlers have succeeded in rolling four championships down the alley. This year the Duck-Pin girls yielded their title by a single point and came in second. However, the Junior Varsity took over where the Varsity left off and captured the championship in their class. The teams were coached by Miss Liebmann. 'Lila 0 Chg Zzflz r and Chg Mofl1er These Twu These two mean more to me than all the gold and millions more. They taught me what ambition was and set me for that shore. They built my ship, its frame, its size, and put into it force Which gave me all the courage that one needs to sail a course. I followed when they steered my hopes and told me of that sea Which glittered with the fortunes that were meant for you and me. I sailed on seas that often were so stormy, and so cold, My charter they had given meg 'twas one that made me bold. Yes, though my ship docked into ports, where sailing was not clear, I had a beacon as my guide, which freed my heart of fear. I knew I could face hardships, and I sailed with courage too, Whenever I approached a port, I knew I could sail through. Those two! Which two? Who were those two who gave me inspiration? Who caused the winds to carry me right to my destination? Father, you were my captain, and Mother, you were the light,', Who gave me hope, who gave me faith, and brought me through the night! Because of him, because of her, I now feel I can steer This CLIPPER SHIP through any sea of life, with hope and cheer! 69 Pattersnn's Part in Civilian Defense Patterson Park students have recently become acquainted with a new activity, that of Civilian Defense. Our school is participating in city-wide air raid drills, Civilian Defense enrollment, and Red Cross instruction. In connecton with the last, a First Aid Club has been introduced at Patterson, with an enrollment limited to twenty-seven so that members can have more practice. At present the standard twenty-hour course is in progress, but we hope to give an advanced course, thus paving the way for the stationing of first aid emergency squads throughout the school. Since Mr. F ishbein, the sponsor, is a First Aid Red Cross Instructor, the students completing the course will be eligible for the First Aid Certificate. However, an even larger number of Pattersonites have participated in the activities of the Red Cross by becoming members of the Junior Division. At Christmas time seventy-five stockings were filled for convalescent soldiers at Fort George G. Meade. Likewise, both the Knitting Club and the Sewing Circle, under the direction of Mrs. Solomon and Mrs. Messner respectively, are working for the Red Cross. We have also participated in the sale of Defense Stamps and Bonds. The purchases in a little over a month have amounted to approximately eleven thousand five hundred dollars. Some Pattersonites, as early as January, 1942, donated blood for the armed forces of the country. Thus Patterson has claimed the honor of being the first school to organize a group of Student Blood Donors. Following are the names of Pattersonis Blood Donors. Helen Bangert Richard Black Angelina Chirgott Nora Chirgott Wayne Colburn Warner Cook Margaret Coski Fred Decker Katherine Flezanis Morton Greenberg 'Joseph Hajewski Annette Hershberg Frank Iacovelli Hazel Jones Joseph Kaiser Marcella Karczewski Wilma Kerner Myrtle King Walter Kraft Raymond Kues Albert Lotz .Joseph Macri Christian Matthews Mary McDonough Jessie Minor Otto Nardone 70 Mary Ramsel Howard Schafer Mindel Seltzer Mary Smith Anna Sturm Sarah Tallagsen Emily Theiss Emma Vitak Louis Wagner Francis Weber The Armistice Assembly Our own Open Forum and Senior Glee Clubs presented on November 11, 1941, a symbolic observance of Armistice Day. Represented on the stage were the scouts, nurses, and armed forces of our nation. Members of the Open Forum Club compared America's acceptance of the challenge of 1917 with the response of American youth in 194-1 who want to do all in their power to aid National Defense. As a tribute, taps was sounded through the building while the student body silently stood facing the west. Then truly, the meaning of Armistic Day became less obscure. Salam llizli I Mindful that his boyhood in Syria had not been a blessed nor a peaceful one, Salom Rizk, more aware of his opportunities as an American citizen than we, awakened in us the pride for our Land of Opportunity. Standing on the platform of our auditorium, he imprinted in the minds of his rapt listeners a vivid etching of the deep hurts, bitter humiliations, the hopeful yearnings of a boyish heart, the gay, and the awkward moments that somehow seemed to lighten his cares. His fondest expectations had become realities, something tangible, when he discovered that he was a natural born citizen of the land that had for so many years been a vague dream, a fairy tale. United with his brothers in Iowa, Salom Rizk with his fortitude and ambition unceasingly sought to find his life's pattern in the overwhelming maze of humanity, and succeeded. Today he portrays the typical American with his eye on the future and his mind on the present. llluhs at Patterson Imagine London without 5'Big Ben , Imagine New York without the subs , Imagine a country without men, Imagine Patterson without clubs! Non-athletic organizations at Patterson have helped promote a feeling of unity and understanding among the students. lt is a privilege to meet and freely discuss subjects of importance. Many individuals do not realize what opportunities are lost by their lack of interest in clubs. Some of our most worthwhile assembly programs have been the result of the faithful cooperation and work of Pattersonis club members and sponsors. Patterson can well be proud of her many non-athletic organizations and the central system, The Coordinated Club Council. Three cheers for Patterson's Clubs! Here's to their continued success! 'Z1 Hifi an iff Zzfmzfrrzfuf Pictured on the day of their arrival at Patterson are the new students, the potential Clara Bartons, Thomas Edisons, Luther Burbanks, Abraham Lincolns, and all those Americans who bear gifts of knowledge and strength to aid in the material and the spiritual growth of this democracy. Christmas at Patterson When Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan on December 7, 1941, Americans began to wonder whether the Christmas holiday would be a joyous one. War clouds darkened our sky, nevertheless, there were still the laughter and happiness for the youth of America. Here at Patterson the Christmas traditions went on. Pattersonites walking through the main corridor stopped and smiled at the beautifully decorated Christmas tree because they knew what it symbolized. This gay and resplendent tree was set up many days in advance so that all could enjoy its beauty and meaning. Each year on the last day before the holiday, all Pattersonites are invited to the annual Christmas assembly presented by the music and art departments. Carols, while being sung, are dramatized on the stage. Famous religious pictures are brought to life by the medium of tableaux. Finally, the entire school, as the beloved carols are being sung by the Glee Club in the balcony, joins in the singing. In many parts of the world this year there was no joy, there was no laughter, nor was there the actual celebrating of Christmas. Christmas was celebrated only within the hearts of the people. We at Patterson are thankful that we live in a land where happiness still prevails. Patterson's Christmas traditions will not be broken as long as there are loyal patriots who love freedom and laughter. May the next Christmas be celebrated everywhere with Peace on earth, goodwill toward menf, 73 Senior Buat Hide Notes func 12, 1941-Senior Boat Ride 3:15 P. M.-S. S.
