(lecyueAt Pe i a unaftce Patrick Henry’s high-stepping band has put on many picturesque performances. The band took first place in the 100-piece band (ivision of the Aqua-tennial. They entertained at banquets at the Nicollet Hotel, played at high school football and basketball games, and by special request furnished the music and marched at the North-South Ail-Star game that was played at the University of Minnesota stadium. Included in their performances were tricky maneuvers such as the forming of the anchor, company front, revolving “H,” and letters of other schools. Some of the popular songs to which they (id dance steps were: Strawberry Blonde, Tampico, Bell Bottom Trousers, B ess Them All, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and You’re a Grand Old Flag. This winter, Henry’s colors were represented at the St. Paul Winter Carnival y its championship band in their flashy scarlet and gray uniforms. Whether it is the heat of the Aquatennial or the cold of the Winter Carnival, Henry’s band is ready to march. 66 The snappy cadence of the Patrick Henry hand brings them on the Held in a perfectly formed anchor. At the first North-South All-Star Football game played in August, 1945, the Henry Band furnished between half entertainment. Critics rated this exhibition higher than they rated performances given by college bands. 67 8ETON HI (Top)—Row S: Sundquist. Green, FriedH, Fitzgerald, McGowan. Joranger, MacLean, Smith. How I: J. The CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP LEAGUE and the HORIZON CLUBS are religious organizations with the purpose of meeting and having good times together. Radio- Pulpit 68 69 9 i JUe BleaclieAA The 1945 season opened with a bang, as Henrv won a decisive victory over Washburn, 31-0. Henry's hopes for a second successive city championship were dampened somewhat by a stunning upset at the hands of Southwest. This defeat did not quell the spirit of victory completely, because the Patriots came through with a 13-6 victory over Marshall the next week. Following that, the Henryites went over to Central and defeated them, 20-6. Henry’s homecoming game against North proved to be a heart-breaker as the Patriots were defeated, 13-12, in a hard-fought game. The gridders next defeated Vocational, 12-0. In the closing game with South, the Patriots fought valiantly, only to be subdued by a score of 19-6. Bottom: Adnmski, Zubeck, Dunn, Swanson. Sparks. Ia mieux. Gutsafson. Co-Capt. Grave, Co-Capt. In the weeks that followed, the Patriots showed definite improvement. After skimming Southwest by one point, the Pats bowed to South the following week. The Scarlets again met terrific odds when they battled and were defeated by Edison, West and Central. In the windup of their games, the Red Raiders whipped Vocational and were downed by North in a fast and furious game. |.eft: Patterson of North craahe through a host of Henry players in a try for a loose hall. ' HcM, With a nucleus of returning veterans and some promising new material, Coach Joe Mullery attempted to model a winning hall club. The veterans are Bruce Rolloff, Roy Adamski, and Ed Bates, pitchers; Chuck Johnson in the outfield; Bob Weber, a catcher who played the infield last season; and infielder, Jim Greenwood. These newcomers, Ray Asp, first base; Dick Jenn-rich, second base, and Jim Coughlin at third base, comprise the remainder of the infield. Norm Skelly and Neil Swanson round out the outfield. The Henry demons burned up the ice for a hard luck third place. The team started slow with a 3 to 0 defeat by Roosevelt. The team looked as if it was on its way to its first victory, but was tied in the closing seconds by a fighting Edison team, 1 to 1. The team suffered its second defeat at the hands of Southwest by a score of 2 to 1. The Henry de-icers stopped Vocational cold, as Goalv Don Murry did nothing but ice fishing all day with no shots coming toward him. The score was 11 to 0. The traditional northside battle with North High was next, with Henry winning, 5 to 2. Central was next in line and they fell to the score of 3 to 1. The last game of the season was a shock to fans as well as to the team, when fighting Marshall tied Henry, 0 to 0. Don Murry, the Henry goaly, played a wonderful game as he made many spectacular saves. Front Row: Grille?, Goslin. I.emieux. Murry, Pearson, Odden. Swanson. Kn strom. Rack row: Clay-patch. Despite this handicap the coach and the team should be given credit for an acceptable season. Wins were registered over Vocational and Edison. Bob Suess and Paul Johnson, outstanding members of this squad, will be lost for the next season. Ray Smith and Dick Jacobson will be back to form the nucleus of the 1946-47 squad. 81 Mat-ime, The Henry wrestling team, led by Don Baker and Wally Hedeen, came in third in the city and regional meets. The gruesome grapplers of Henry started out slowly by being defeated three times in a row to the tune of 33-6 in favor of Roosevelt, a 28-5 win by Washburn and bowing, 36-3, to Vocational. The team came back against Washburn by pinning them, 25-14. Next it was Marshall’s turn to be trimmed, 19-9. The whole team will return next year and Mr. Lun-dell will return to coach them. The muscle men of Henry, under the capable direction of Mr. Floyd Valley, did surprisingly well this year. Led by “you can hold me down anytime” Elof-son, the team placed fourth in the city. These boys put on two exhibitions in the auditorium—one for the students and the other for the P.T.A. Johnson, and Holton teeing off, along with Duchscher, Kuss, Turnquist and Crawford. To improve their form intra-squad matches are arranged at Theodore Wirth Golf Course. In the first match of the season Henry lost to De LaSalle by a score of 12 to 11U , the team being hampered by the absence of several outstanding members. The outlook for this season appears to be very favorable as the squad is well balanced. Row 2: Duchscher, Jeffords. D. Johnson. Row 1: Kuss. Holton, Turnquist.
