The disordered feelings which we shall remember, however, will not be altogether cloudy for us, for in that happy and reasonable day a cheerful note which is inseparable from these times will persist. And this we shall associate with our years at Eastside High. We have adopted the torch of knowledge as our theme. Surely knowledge, coupled with wisdom, will light the way of the world to our democratic ideal. MURRAY FREED, MARVIN TUCKMAN, fEdiIf01'SJ. WWW E H' Cf 7? Many honors have been bestowed on Eastside and you have been largely responsible for them. Our school is grateful for what you have done. Your attitude and spirit are worthy of praise. Now, as you go out into the world, continue the good work. In- stead of taking tests, be prepared to meet them. Prove that democracy's investment in your education was and will be worth- while. I have confidence that you will carry on and remain in- telligently loyal to the ideal for which Eastside stands. Pmzciprzl. f if LJ DEAR SENIORS: All education is a preparation for complete living, but no life is complete unless it is dominated by character. Character has been defined as the operation of the human will dominated by principle. The supreme objective of your teachers at Eastside has been to mold you into men and Women of good character, to help you build a life governed by precept. To attain life's purposes, you must be able to cope with every situa- tion in which you may find yourself. The school has given you some preparation to meet the tasks which face you. To be sure, other agencies, such as your home, your church, your associations, have influenced your preparation. In the last analysis, however, your success will depend upon your courage and your determina- tion to master every situation. For as the poet says: 'Tis the will of the soul that decides the goal And not the storm or the strifef' Vicelnrincipal s if V W 3 W . ., NR Y.-,,.P S. A band whose members always show up and never play a sour note is our gift to Mr. Dutcher, all of him. Miss Banghart is rewarded with a mute sec- tion and sound proof walls. Three new, unused, streamlined typewriters are willed to Mr. Crooks. Something new has been added for Miss Grimshaw, a fourth floor - a new library. We leave to Miss Koch a class perfect in Latin sight translations. A healthy student body and faculty is willed to Miss Soutar. Part the second - to the classes that follow in our fading footsteps. Suzanne Polowe leaves her capacity to keep a class in good cheer and laughter to Clare Van Dyk. Happy-go-lucky Mary Cuccinello leaves to Tom Pascreta his talent. To Joyce Stemer goes Faye Krauthamer's ability to select Schiapar- elli styles. Heinz Suhl bequeathes his power of making a co-ed,s heart flutter to handsome Dick Hill. Peppy Marion De Crosta and Jack Mial add their vitality to the rest of the squad. When you see red, it's only Helen Cornett's blushing prowess being transferred to Lou Hoitsma. Versatile Vicky Smith be- queathes her athletic skills to Helen Seymour. After adding his initials to those gone before him, Al Kachadurian hands the well worn gavel over to the new president, George Lessuck. Marvin Tuckman and Murray Freed smile slyly as they leave to the new Senior Mirror staff exactly one bottle of 1,000 aspirin tablets, one bottle of morphine and ten packs of reefers, to help rid them of their worries. Part the end - to those who have sighed with relief when they thought they had slipped through the noose. The vivacity of Doris Leffertz is left to anyone with the energy and will power to fill her shoes. To any two courageous enough to try to equal them, Mary Calabrese and Irving Nurik leave their Quiz Kid knowledge. Bernard Unger- leider, Herman Auerbach and Charles Kaplan leave their place in the band to any student virtuoso capable of keeping up the pace they set. To any quick thinker and slow mover, we donate l'Hundred and One Tried Excuses for Being Late to Class, by Bernard Greenbaum. Any science enthusiast with the capacity to absorb thoughts quickly is willed, in addition to his own, Harold Neufeld's faculty. To the seniors we leave the happy thoughts of graduation in June. Juniors receive thoughts of class elections in the near future and a little swelled head from being upper classmen. We leave the sophomores a book on salesmanship - or how to sell an elevator ticket to the frosh. To the freshmen, being self- made men, we leave but the idea of four years full of fun and studies. To the faculty in general and especially to Mr. Tompkins, our deepest gratitude and fond regard. a CLASS HISTORY Four years ago some 400 insignificant Freshmen entered the portals of East- side and this week 300 will be told farewell as they ascend the platform for the last time, to receive their diplomas. Those who fell by the wayside have missed the many honors bestowed upon Eastside and the class of January '42. As time marches on and the lives that we are living this day become history, faces and happenings of Eastside in our day will slip from the grasp of our burdened minds. Who was the backbone of the class of January, 1942? Who was active enough to rate consideration in the CRITERION, the official school paper, which itself was enhanced by the addition of many members of our class? The greatest change in the history of the school administration took place dur- ing our brief stay, when Mr. Francis North vacated the position of principal, after serving Eastside nobly for 15 years and Paterson for one quarter of a century. Mr. Ellsworth Tompkins received the appointment for the vacated posi- tion and we leave Eastside sure of his successful administration. Athletic awards have been numerous. The state championi' football team boasted Seniors Kachadurian, Sylvester, Elsner, Giannelli, and Suhl on its roster, the first undefeated cross-country team was represented by Mial and Voorhees, Vicky Smith and Betty Ohlson were named as junior referees, by a state board, for girls' sports. Jean McLuckie and Harriet Parker headed the Criterion Staff in another ban- ner year of editions while Editor-in-chief McLuckie was adjudged one of the best staff leaders in the history of the school newspaper. Successful social events will also be remembered, namely, the senior sponsored Music Maker U Programf' featuring Jimmy Dorsey nd his staff of artists. 17, Mtn, READ OUR PARENTS lzastslde Cnterlon POLICY WEDNESDAY i' Student Publication of Eastside High School -il' VOL. vin.-No. 2. gg. Each section class elects a boy and a girl at the commencement of each term to represent it at the Council meetings and to act as leaders in transacting special business in the class-room, such as collecting the library fund and distributing the Criterion on publication Thursday. The presidency was taken over by Suzanne Polowe, former vice-president, in December, following the resignation of William Woodhouseg the duties of secretary-treasurer were carried out by Betty McLaughlin. Miss Marian Crooks is adviser to the Council. This governing body is active in co-operating with all student projects undertaken. It sponsored the UC. C. C. campaign Qsig- nifying courtesy, cleanliness, and co-operationj, which met with great success. It is a member of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils and also sends delegates to conferences of metropolitan secondary schools for discussing problems of student government. At times, as it sees Ht, the Council conducts social affairs to raise money. Last term the Council's efforts beautified the school grounds, by inducing the Board of Education to plant small hedges around the lawns adjacent to the gates, so that canvas will no longer be used during football games. The climax of the newspaper's work comes annually, when under the sponsorship of the publication, the Queen of the Campus is crowned in a special assembly after a two month ballotting campaign. This was supervised last year by Janet White, former news editor. Outstanding members of the staff receive membership to 'tQuill and Scrolln, an international honorary society for high school journalists who show pro- ficiency in creative writing. Other deserving members are given recognition in the form of bronze and silver E's . The leadership this term was assumed by Editor-in-chief Jean McLuckie, who received the first gold EU ever awarded to a Criterion editor, and Managing Editor Harriet Parker, recipient of a silver EU, under the advisership of Mr. A. Duryee Crooks for the editorial department and Miss Ula Levin, for the business section. A division of the Criterion', is the public newspaper columns for conveying to outsiders the activities of the school. Pins are awarded to members for outstanding achievement, bearing the emblem of the society and the class year numerals of the recipient. fa A JT C THE BAND No football game is complete without Mr. Ray Dutchefs talented group of musicians, which has won recognition far and wide and most recently was awarded a trophy for an outstanding perform- ance in a contest, in which all the bands of schools belonging to the Passaic Valley Conference were represented. Donned with orange and blue Capes, white pants and sweaters, and blue over- seas caps, the Band puts on its greatest show of the year, when on Thanksgiving Morn, it marches to the Hinchliffe Stadium from the City Hall and enters the gridiron amidst thunderous cheers resounding from the Eastside rooting section. For a year's work the musicians receive an emblem consisting of an orange UE mounted on a blue lyre, which they proudly sport around the school. JUNIOR POLICE The job of making the passing to and from the school safe is a most important one of the Junior Police Force, which is advised by Mr. Edward Mather. With Ray Woodhouse as chief, the boys do patrol duty around the campus. There is also an assistant chief and several associates who receive appointments under a graduated system of advancement. For their inestimable work, the force sends a delegation to the convention for junior police held each spring in Washington under the sponsorship of the American Auto Association. The delegates are chosen on a point system which boys obtain through good work and selling candy and peanuts at the football games. In their quest for the umythicalw state title the l'Undertakers,' amassed 187 points while their opponents could only account for 20. The Ghosts opened their campaign with Montclair, rated very highly in the state. They took advantage of the breaks and when husky Ted Dostanko crashed through the line to block a Montclair boot deep in their territory, the only score of the day was set up, giving Eastside a 7 to 0 victory over the Mounties. . The second game brought West Orange, a formidable foe, to Baeurle Field. In this tilt the Undertakersn started early and strong and when the final whistle blew, the eleven had rolled up 24 big points, holding the t'Cowboys in check throughout. Following this victory the Orange and Blue moved against Lincoln of Jersey City. They trampled over the I-Iudsonites and with Al Kachadurian slicing through the line, posted a 19 to 6 victory. The Mustangs were greeted with four l touchdowns, two by land and two by air, for a 27 to 0 rout. L Hopes of remaining unbeaten were shattered on Election Day when the uIn- diansn from Passaic, in a rough and tumble affair, posted an 8 to 6 upset. This defeat only angered the l'Ghosts and they scared 20 points from East Rutherford to post a shutout victory. The visitors brought with them the famous Syracuse HY formation, which proved ineffective. A Pointing all season to their important tilt with Garfield, the Rossmen came if through and outfought the Boilermakers for a 13 to 0 victory. This win l shattered a streak of 16 straight unbeaten games compiled by the Argauermen. Led by Larry Doby's 60 yard touchdown run after a pass interception, and 1 the line bucking of Al Kachadurian, the Orange and Blue scored twice in the l second quarter, enough to offset any threat Garfield might have brought up. 1 The uUndertakers finished their schedule on Thanksgiving Day against their l downtown rivals and before 12,000 Patersonians unmercifully trounced the l Colts 45 to 6. Kachadurian threw 20 passes, completing 14 for live touch- l downs, three by Larry Doby, and one each by Fred Elsner and Heinz Suhl. In the initial contest with Memorial on December 13, the Ghosts,' were com- pletely overshadowed in the first half by last year's Eastern States' Champions. Fighting bitterly in the second session, the Ghosts cut down on the West New York lead but could never come close enough to threaten. Paced by the 15 points of Larry Doby and the 13 of Luke Badagliacca the cagemen vanquished East Rutherford, 41 to 25, on December 19. All-State Larry Doby, captain of the team, and Luke Badagliacca have shown their ability to score and are among the best ball handlers in the state.. Lanky Les Harris can be counted on to retrieve the balls off the backboard and throw in points when necessary. Stan Altshuler and A1 Dybacki have excelled onthe defense. HENRY RUMANA The greatest quintet of our junior year boasting the big Hve of Doby, Miller, Hapgood, Brown, and Badagliacca, brought many honors and thrills to the school when they played superior ball to keep the Conference Championship within the portals of East- side. Outstanding rivalry was provided by Garfield, which fell a victim to the vanquishing Ghost basketeers the first game, but came back to win the second. The play-off game for the title Went to the Orange and Blue as a result of a 47 to 45 overtime game held on the neutral court of Hawthorne High School. The Boys In Action Doby - Laufenberg - Ortman - Blonkowski - Altshuler - Harris Coach Rumana - Badagliacca - Clune - Dybacki - Thompson TENNIS Supervised by Mr. Jacob Weber, the tennis team did its part to uphold the high standards of Eastside's athletic squads by winning eleven matches while losing only three. In conference competition the racqueteers were unbeaten, easily winning the title by trampling each opponent. Clifton and Garfield were each crushed twice while Central went to defeat once. The courtmen earned victories over the New York Military Academy and Englewood, split even in two matches with Montclair and relinquished its other defeat to Barringer. The racqueteers opened their season opposing Tenafly, and before they could get started, they were nipped in the bud 3 to 2. Regaining their stride in the next meet, they overcame Montclair by the same score, 3 to 2. This commenced a long string of victories, numbering eight, seven over Conference opponents and another over Kearny. The team hit a stone wall and sustained its first loss in nine meets when it was outvolleyed by Barringer 4 to 1. A week later Montclair turned in a 4 to 1 victory over the 'KGhosts. The mainstay of the team was the top seeded Sid Brown. Other performers were Hugh Sloan, August Katterman, George Cohn and Bob Rose. Winning its ninth consecutive meet in dual competition by vanquishing Rutherford, the 1941 harriers completed their first undefeated season in the school's history. The Goldberg coached team also captured the Passaic Val- ley championship for the third straight year, crossing the Hnish line ahead of Passaic, Clifton, Rutherford and East Rutherford. This was the Hrst year that the cinder-men entered the State Championship competition and they did well in fin- ishing fifth, behind Trenton, Thomas Jefferson, Union and Dover, in that order. Opening its season on October 9, the Ghosts defeated Clifton by the shutout route, 15 to 40. Then came suc- cessive victories over Rutherford and Clifton again. The COACH IOE GOLDBERG hill-and-dalers resumed action against Lodi on October 29, conquering them 10 to 36. Within a space of six days from November 5 to November 10 the harriers rang up three wins, trouncing East Rutherford, Passaic and Rutherford. Already having beaten Lodi the second time, the Ghosts,, finished their most sensational season. Lettermen include six seniors who will graduate Eastside before next season. Among these six are Jack Mial and Bill Kirkham, co-captains of the team. Kirkham and Ray Chiappelli provided the teams one-two punch throughout the season, dividing their glory equally throughout the season.
