As we look back over the past four years, we try to capture, in words and pictures, our Eastside High School, the Eastside that we know. But we cannot express the deeper imprints which the school has made upon us-this we carry with us, always fresh in our memories. As we progress in years in the pursuit of our various fields of endeavor, it will indeed be a pleasure to wax sentimental and to reminisce about our beloved Eastside, as we knew it. 'im, 4' By you these days will be long remembered. In the same season in which Eastside's largest class is being graduated, we are celebrating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Washing- ton's inauguration in New York City. We do honor to the Father of His Country. We are proud of his achievements as President in starting upon its course a federal democracy that for a century and a half has maintained and spread liberty and freedom for citizens whose origin has been from many lands. From a fringe of thirteen states along the Atlantic we have grown into a great continental commonwealth of forty-eight states. In commemorating the event by a great World's Fair, we now look to the future in a spirit of hope and idealism. We, and others like us, have the urge to do well our part in our democracy, that is ,moving forward to help fashion a still better world of tomorrow. More than four hundred graduates are receiving diplomas this june. May your happy school days lead on to richer and fuller lives in the days to come. Fmncir R. N owl: Knowing most of you by name and personality, I naturally feel that one short paragraph or so is too formal and inclusive for a salutation to the Class of june 1959. I am very sorry to see you go. Four years of acquaintance have made me feel part of you, and despite what a few may think, I say to you, new faces will come to these halls, but they will not take the place of those departing. I shall not forget you. In this respect, I am happy that you are graduating, and that is for your own future-self. The world will open vistas that will challenge your courage, your intelligence, your resourcefulness, and your reliability. Remember that even in these days the world is awaiting men and women who have the will to do. May you be blessed with health, happiness, sufficient wealth, and friends. Ellrufortla Tompkim. mmm mmm ? There were lots of times when your hopes were low, And the outlook wasn't bright, But that didn't stop your gameness, lad, Nor determination or your fight. Another would have quit the game, The shackles of hardship freed, But you kept on with courage high, Wlmere they failed-you did succeed. You slowly mounted to the top, And heard the wild acclaim, Wfhich told you then, Robert boy, That you had tasted fame. The final race is over, Bob, And the tumult now will cease, You've reached the ultimate goal, lad, Quiet, still and peace! -Imdore Gloldrfeilz S E N I O R SECTION ROSE ABATE Commercial Rm-ie 343 21st Avenue, Paterson, N. I 3 5 -7 AT, f THE SPORTS CAST By Doon Goldstein Having a chartered plane standing by at Murchio's airport and weighted down with credentials, toothbrushes, shoe polish, a jar of Alka-Seltzer, min- eral water and a brand new pair of maroon colored flannels, I can now pro- ceed to bat out my last scholastic column for the sake of posterity, knowing darn well that my getaway will be as easy as flunking a couple of subjects in Brother Frazee's room of learning . . . Four years of rubbing elbows with Eastside athletes has brought memor- able experiences to mind, which I will now narrate to you even if you don't relish the thought of listening to my tripe . . . After all, if you glance across the page, you will be compelled to read Graham Ginsberg's column, so what's the use of even bothering to decipher his stuff when you can read the same hash here without flickering an eye-lid, and with no extra charge for admission, either . . . Athletes are generally well behaved people, who wash behind the ears and cut off their corns before going to bed every night . . . And Arnie Salzberg even brushes his teeth with his inflated tomato ketchup . . . Nevertheless, I'm happy to relate that I do know fellows who are downright, honest to good- ness clowns on the field of athletic endeavor and I do mean blokes like Gil- ford Blackman, our Man O' War of the race track, Kenneth Malone, our pachyderm who played center for our football team for a good number of hectic years, Cook Fisherman, our alleged funny man of basketball fame, and a couple of other defectives who are really clever . . . Arnie Salzberg, who resembles a thin slice of Hungarian thread while cavorting about the courts, really did some fine playing for Eastsides tennis team, and last season was ranked as one of the best players in the county . . . Even Arnie's girl thinks he's good, and that is adding fuel to the fire . . . Did I hear someone mention thrills in schoolboy athletic events? Wluy, pardner, I could wrap that moth eaten shawl around my scrawny neck, draw my wheel chair a mite closer to the hearth and tell you some tales that would make your remaining two hairs stiffen like one of joe Louis' opponents . . . First on the list of sportsmen, we will bring up the name of ADOLPH 1sADAoLIACc.:A. Adolph, or Baggy as he is better known, is one of the many players men- tioned in this column, who is a bi-product of School No. 6. He is a quiet little fellow with an even temperament, excelling in baseball and basketball. I-Ie gave a good account of himself in the two sports, both of which he played for two years with the varsity. On the baseball diamond he proved himself invaluable as a third base- man, while socking out that base hit just when it counted. On the basketball court his cool headed play served as an inspiration to the other players on the team. Next we find VINCE FIASCANARO. the cause of many ohs and ahs from the Eastside femmes. A cousin to Badagliacca, he also went out for two sports, basketball and football. After one year of V. basketball, Vince made the varsity team in his senior year. His name will go down in history as a result of his having scored the winning baskets in each of two overtime contests with Central, thereby enabling Eastside to cop the city cham- pinoship. In football he acted as first rate replacement for the much heavier Ken Malone at the center position. So with a rug beater in one hand and a snow shovel in the other we begin a caravan to the homes of our illustrious alumni who left lasting scars in their chosen profession. In lieu of a professional guide, the United States Marine Corps repre- sented by Top Sargeant Anthony Zallo Qnow retiredj, will conduct us to the homes of the budded and drooped genii of Eastside fame. Harvey Asher, we find, fills the best part of a castle on Blossom walk. Outside the door hangs the legend Asher, M. D. A conscientious fellow, always. Even now as we watch he is sampling a rare concoction, beg pardon, hair tonic. Adolph Badagliacca swings a bat as long as himself now that the big leagues claim him. He had quite a time getting the job so the story goes. It seems he wanted pay. Hidden in a nook at the new jimmy Coate's World's Fair is jane Bishop demonstrating to scores of eager men a new procedure for making the most devestating paper flowers. Harry Benninger says hello as he flits by on a traveling crane. He likes to personally oversee all work on that stupendous, awe-inspiring feat, the pollution of the too tidy, sweet smelling Passaic River. An earnest group of Princeton Frosh hang on every word of that learned Professor Isadore Goldstein as he conducts his lectures on more painless methods to murder the Kings English, Qlong may it wavej. It's all part of his course in Sports writing, and who should know how? QCertainly not Goldsteinj. Sara Kaufman at the moment is doing her best to placate her implacable brother who insists the best place to hold any World's Fair is about the waist. We would have gone to Harry Coyle but our unpaid dues for member- ship in the Better Living Group might have started trouble. PROPHECY Marie Fusilli is engaged in buying miles of hempen rope. Still hoping, you know, to, hitch her wagon to a star. Martin Platt is doing his best to show his breeding and imbibe a bowl of soup of dandelions brought to Miss Durbin. A billboard catches our roving eye depicting the latest movie venture of our own Donald Hall, known now as the possessor of the profile of the silver screen. Central Park provides the setting for Henry Hankel's act for the Rustle Tustle Muscle Builder. Stage effects . . . Hank lifting tons of bar bells and dumbells. No we don't mean Bart Vuolo, he's in Mesopotamia. joseph Leonard, now one of the city's fire Chiefs', innuring firemen to the thrill of catching fire victims. He received special training in high school in jumping from windows f3rd story onesj. The strain of Leffertz's Fourth Movement in Asia Minor wafts from a window in Greenwich Village. No wildlhaired Bohemian greets our eyes but none other than the composer of such hits as ujdhnny and Frankie and I've been working on the Mirror, he, himself, George Leffertz. We meant to drop in on Jerome Gardenia Perchik but in his post as Public Relations Counsel for the United States government, he is busily em- ployed in distant Andora convincing the natives of that nation the glories of Woman's Suffrage. Not a bad idea donchathink? Out in Rockaway we meet jack Wilkin, one-time golf champ, now chief greens keeper there. If he learns to cut lawns much faster, Tony's job at East- side will be in danger. Our list of names exhausted we look around amazedly. What heathen land is this? Our hearts sink at the prospect of the tramp back from this seemingly deserted spot. But ever to the rescue comes the U. S. Army. Sargeant Zallo fstill retiredj toots his tweet and from every rock, tree and fence spring the boys from the U. S. Ruth Seymour leaves Mr. Daugherty with one less heckler. jack Wilkin leaves some other stooge to do the dirty work for the Senior Mirror make-up staff. Sarah Kaufman leaves her vivacity and frivolity to Audrey Gordon. Betty Elsaesser bequeathes her ivory-tickling propensities equally divided between Doris Grossman and Muriel Eichelbaum. ' Doris Hinchliffe leaves everyone breathless. Flora Avner wills her vocal ability toijean Parilli. Helen Pekar leaves her sister Lillian to carry on where she left off. We leave Grover Whalen to his gardenias and prayers for sunshine. We leave Eddie Cantor still trying to marry off his five daughters. V We leave Annabelle Pyatt to entertain future classes. We leave Gay Kitay still campaigning against chartreuse, but who is she to defy, Schiaparelli? We leave Dric and Zim still boosting Coco-Cola sales-more power to them! - . We leave Mr. Reed continuing to chase the girls away from the boys' lockers. We leave Miss Grimshaw gently chastising, in her inimitable way, those who violate the code of silence. We, the undersigned, leave these dregs of our high school careers to be deposited by ever-faithful Tony in the nearest garbage can. May God have mercy on our souls. - THE EDITOR'S ACKNOWLEDGMENT In editing this year book we have tried to break away from previous patterns and present a book which is modern and yet not modernistic. For any small measure of success that we may have we are indebted first and foremost to our adviser Mr. Harry F. Smart who bore the lion's share of the worries and setbacks that are inevitable. Without his aid and guidance this book could not have been published. For insuring the success of this book we owe a debt of gratitude to Quacken-bush Department Store for the excellent photography contained herein. We wish also to thank the following persons: Jack Wilkin-for his aid in pasting prints and his all around clowning. Mrs. Lyle-for the use of her cutter which by some miracle was returned to her. Mr. Robert Dimond and Miss Sara Martin for their cooperation and patience. The janitors who opened Room 64 on the numerous occasions when we locked ourselves out. .Dave Eilenberg for his candid pictures and divider pages. To all the others who have given help and encouragement we offer our heartfelt thanks. GEORGE LEFFERTZ and MARTIN PLATT, Editors-in-Chief. ADVERTISERS THE SPORTS CAST C continued J didn't count . . . Walt the Waster forgot to touch third base . . . Watching Gil Blackman win a countless number of races for the Eastside track team and finally having the pleasure of knowing that here was a boy who had every- thing Qeven a set of loaded dicej . . . I never failed to thrill to the determined play of Dolph Badagliacca, who fought just as hard on the basketball floor as he did on the baseball diamond . . . The night at the Paterson Armory when joe Cingale knocked out Bernie Taylor in a fight sponsored by the Paterson Evening News-P. B. A. Associ- ation . . . Cingale, after staggering around the ring like a drunk on Times Square, suddenly nailed Taylor with a vicious sock on the point of the chin and Taylor collapsed to the canvas, his chips being checked in for the night, One of the funniest incidents I ever witnessed was one in which Ken Malone was chief character . . . It seemed that Eastside and another institution were vying for prestige on the gridiron when Malone and his adversary began heaving insults at one another . . . When the opposing center took a violent dislike to Malone's caroling of the Dipsy Doodle , Kenneth promptly bowled the fellow into a neighboring county . . . When the victim awoke, he mum- bled, Dial off that stationlh . . . And then there's Walt Porter, the baseball player . . . He was the only player to cash in on his social security during his tenure of office as right fielder on the squad known as Nine Old Men and Coach Al Livingstone, otherwise, casually identified as the Eastside baseball team . . . Now don't get me wrong . . . I pray of you, please don't get me wrong . . . But it was a real pleasure watching Porter strike out . . . Why the breeze was so terrific that Coach Livingstone came mighty near being blown off his beach chair into distant left field where joe Passero was playing she loves me, she loves me not with a solitary daisy . . . During my years as scholastic scrivener, Eastside did turn out some re- markable teams and a good many of my brother graduates played vital roles with those winning clubs . . . Cookie Fisherman, when the wasn't smiling to the fair lassies who surrounded him like he was the Alamo, played basketball for three years and played on the '37 club which ripped off a chunk of Passaic County title . . . Then Walt Porter won the county title for Central when he starred against Eastside a year or so back . . . Vince Fiascanaro, the smoothie from Twelfth Avenue, established local basketball history by winning two games against Central's five . . . two overtime baskets twice told the tale in a shell . . . In closing this epic of evolution, it is only fair that we give credit where credit is due and mention something of Graham Ginsburgls athletic prowess in scholastic endeavor . . . PASSING IN REVIEW Q continuedj They tell me some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths, but it seems CHARLES HCOOKIEU FISHER- MAN was born with a silver basketball in his. After playing one year of freshman ball, the ever popular Cookie, made the grade and played with the varsity three years. In his last year he was rewarded with the captaincy of the team. All-American BEAU BRUMMEL BRUCE ROWEN proved himself to be a standout basketball performer during his last year in school. After two just mediocre years of J. V. ball Bruce did a complete about-face. He was the most consistent high scorer on the team, averaging just about ten points per game. WALT PORTER after going to Central for three years where he was a constant thorn in the side of Eastside's basketball team, transferred to Eastside last year. He played plenty of baseball in right field for the orange and blue, after which he turned to playing end on the football team. Then he was found to be ineligible, and wasn't allowed to play at his favorite sport, basketball. Long, lanky ARNIE SALZBERG is another man Eastside is going to miss when he's gone. Arnie claims to have played tennis for Eastside way back in the days of Richy Pinck and jackie Totten. During the last two years he has been captain of the team. In his freshman days Arnie also played freshman basketball. GILFORD G11.L1E,' BLACKMAN, ace track star was one of the handiest men Eastside has been able to boast of in a long time. During his couple of years stay with the track team, Gillie,' ran in the 100, 220, hurdles, relay, broad jump and high jump events. As we go to press, it is inevitable that JOE GIAMATT, who alternated with Emil Garlati catching big Rube Wiggins last year, will be the number one catcher this season. Although his stickwork hasn't been very hefty, he has been a good handler of pitchers. Remember when you thought you saw a little termite streak down the basketball court and swish the cords for two points, and then you realized it was CARL BLUMEN- THAL. After playing sterling ball with the V. team for several years, and not being quite tall enough for varsity ball, Coach Henry Rumana rewarded Carl with a varsity letter in his last year. PETE NIGRO, southpaw pitching artist, who acted as understudy to Rube Wiggins as pitcher on the varsity baseball team last year, blossomed into Eastside's num- ber one pitcher during his senior year in school. Al- though he could not be classed as one of Eastside's greats, he was a most valuable man to have in there. JOHNNY CARLOMAGNO is another example of a small fellow, but good player. Johnny proved to be a cap- able understudy to Lou Cuccinello at the halfback posi- tion in football. As shortstop for the baseball team johnny was one of the flashiest players ever to play under the Eastside banner. There must be special mention also of the fine per- formances turned in by DONALD HDUCKJ' TOMLINSON, who has played J. V. basketball for a couple of years, BILL MEAD, hurdlerg GEORGE LEFFERTZ of the tennis teamg JAKE OBERER, track starg ED GLEN and RAY STRONG of the cross-country team, the former of which was awarded a gold medal for his performance in the county meet, and DOMINICK vAN NOOR, outfielder on the baseball team. Before closing, I want to make extra special mention of that demon sports reporter 1sADoRE HDOCH GOLDSTEIN, the bearded bard of E. H. S. Some of you may not know it, but that most distinguished and scholarly gentleman played freshman basketball averaging two points per game. He also indulges in a little vocal serenading, and if you sneak up on him when he isn't looking, I'm sure you'll see him indulge in his secret vice, snapping his garter. And now comes the worst part of this bit of reminisc- ing, when we come to the parting of ways. So when you see me again, just say Eastside '39, and, I'll know who you are.
