Shakespeare eontest Selections from Shakespeare's plays were presented at the annual Shakespeare Contest held in Harbeson Hall. The event began with the first contestant, Claudette Conner, en- acting a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Next, each in his turn, Freda Dringenberg, Hamlet , Neil Hereford, Julius Caesar , Jim McNeeley, The Merchant of Venice , Virginia Hougasian, i'Macbeth , Gail Shannon, As You Like lt , Don Spruance, King Richard Ill , and Virginia Starr, King Henry IV. Eloise Brumage, chairman, intro- duced the group in order. The first place went to Virginia Starr, second place to Don Spruance, and third place, hon- orable mention, to Virginia Hougasian. Anderson's play reveals the life of Elizabeth Tudor, the first Elizabeth of England who ruled long and well. lt is a story of the great love between the Earl of Essex, famous in his own rights as a general, and Elizabeth.
