sophomores . . ., vf Junior rwightirwgole The immaculate cleanliness and the clearly anesthetic smell could only lead to one place- the hospital. For some hospitals meant sickness or death, but for people like Susan Moore, sophomore, it was a place to learn and work as well as to have fun. Susan, like other students who worked at hospitals, was a member of a group called Junior Volunteers, or Candy Stripers. These students worked in patient service, central supply, recovery room or surgery. You meet all kinds of people, she said. Some are really nice, but some are kind of grouchy, and you have to realize what they're going through. The benefits? Volunteers who worked a certain number of hours got special recognition. Twenty-'tive hours work earned a Junior Volunteers patch, and 50 hours work eamed a professional nametag. According to Susan, however, the biggest benefit was the experience. Eamlng her stripes. Working at Baptist Medical Center is a rewarding pastime for sophomore Susan Moore.
