HISTCDRY On Tuesday, September 2, 1975, a partially completed Parkside High School opened to 1,105 students and fifty-five teachers. The 56.5 mil- lion complex had been under con- stmction for over two years, but was still incomplete. The gymnasium, industrial arts, home economics, and music de- partments were still unusable. Thir- ty-two of the seventy teaching sta- tions, or classrooms, were still un- finished. Up until the last moment, one of the major concerns of the Board of Education was whether or not the cafeteria would be able to serve the students and faculty, or if they would have to 'lbrown bag it. The new school was situated on a fifty-five acre tract of land located off Schumaker Drive. The building contained 5,000,000 cubic feet and had a capacity of 1,200 students. The facility was also full of major innovations for education in Wico- mico County. Some of these innovations includ- ed special facilities for handi- capped students such as easily ac- cessible ramps leading from the upper to the lower level and low- ered water fountains. The walls in the teaching stations were actually demountable partitions which en- able classroom size to be easily changed as the need arises. The building contained almost no win- dows or doors in the classrooms, and the only natural light in the school was supplied by the firedoor located in each classroom. An- other major innovation was the air conditioning system. Along with the ultramodern audito- rium, which held nine hundred people, the school also contained the only planetarium in Wicomico County. The new Viewlex planetar- ium would allow for new in-depth study in astronomy. The new high school was dedicated to Royd A. Mahaffey, who served eighteen years as the Superinten- dent ofthe Board of Education, and Parkside's mascot, the Ram, was derived from his initials.
