WGRLD AND NATION Disaster struck on the world scene. ln Ethopia, 7.5 million people hovered on the brink of starvation. ln an effort to provide funding for food, many popular artists formed a group called Band-Aid and re- leased Do they know its Christmas? The Uworst in- dustrial disaster ever struck in Bhopal, India, when the Union Carbide chemical plant leaked methyl isocyonate, killing over 2,500 people. Women were in the news in 1984-1985. Geraldine Fer- raro, Democrat, became the first woman nominated to run for national office, when she served as the running mate of Presidential candidate, Walter Mondale. Although not elect- ed, the Mondale-Ferraro ticket established a place for women in the highest realms of poli- tics. Capturing the hearts of Americans, Mary Lou Retton became the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal in gymnastics. Slogans and catchy advertis- ing phrases have always been a way of life in the U.S. The Wendy's fast food chain gained national attention with their l'Where's the Beef? com- mercials. Also, in a new wave of political interest and patrio- tism, l Love the USA bumper stickers appeared overnight, and prominent magazines, such as TIME gave editorial space to the psychology be- hind the popularity of such slogans.
