Mr. Anthony Sarbanes, pic- tured in the doorway of his un- finished office, was appointed as Parkside's first principal on the recommendation of Super- intendent Royd A. Mahaffey. Mr. Sarbanes began his educa- tional career in Wicomico County in 1961. He taught at Pittsville High, Wicomico Ju- nior High, and Wicomico Se- nior High, his alma mater. After sewing as assistant prin- cipal first at Wicomico Junior High and later at Bennett Se- nior, he became principal of Wicomico Senior High in 1971. Mr. Sarbanes demonstrated remarkable ability to organize and work with people, quali- ties which proved invaluable in the hectic early days. Park- side was about seventy per opened in September, 1975. None of the special areas were ready, and the sounds of con- struction work in the west wing competed with the sounds of the band and cho- rus practicing in the Media Center. The new librarian- faced thousands of books all waiting to be carded and stacked. The bells did not work, the main lobby was of- ten dusty, and construction workers roamed freely. Park- side people coped with the chaos and established the spirit of striving that has marked Parkside's decade of class. The yearbook staff ex- tends a special thank you to Mr. Sarbanes who furnished the color slides and construc- tion history used in the open- ing section. cent complete when its doors l Pictured above are faculty and support personnel who have been with Parkside since 1975. VICTCDRY T LAST! Homecoming '84 was fantastic! Thursday afternoon each class decorated a hall patterned after the theme, 'lAladdin's Castle, and spirited students then moved to the gym to try something new - a pep rally before the traditional bonfire. The band performed, the cheerleaders sparked up spirit, and the court was introduced. On Friday morning, the winners of the hall decorating contest were an- nounced. In first place were the se- niors with the sophomores finish- ing a distant second. Trailing closely behind were the juniors and freshmen, respectively. To boost school spirit, students dressed in green and white on the day of the game. At 6:45 Friday evening, cars and trucks gathered in the Civic Center parking lot where they were lined up for the parade. The parade then proceeded across Glen Avenue, through the stadium parking lot, and around the track surround- ing the field. The seniors who participated in fall sports, cho- rus, SGA, band, and other activi- ties honored their parents in a pre-game ceremony. Kick-off was promptly at 8 o'clock. The first half went well for Parkside. Breaking the school record, Jai Isear scored a 42-yard field goal. Brenda Briscoe, Varsity Cheer- leading Advisor, croums Dar- rell Brow while Queen Karen West looks on. At halftime the court was hon- ored. Karen West and Darrell Brow were chosen to reign over the remainder of the weekend. Their attendants were Penny Parsons, Ginger Cooper, Craig Leak, Andre Scott fsenior representa- tivesb, Lisa Stephens, Lisa Kill- mon Qjunior representativesl, Kim Clark, Wendi Bell Csopho- more representativesj, Tricia Van Dornick and Kim Lennox ffreshman representativesl. The second half of the game continued to go Parkside's way. Scoring the last touch- down of the game, the Green Machine left the final score of the game 27 to 16 in the Rams' favor. On Saturday, students con- verted the cafeteria into an Aladdin's Castle for the dance later that evening. Posters Senior quarterback Rich Wrenn fires a pass doumfield.
