optional musical performance. Due to the hour, the student audience was limited but satisfied with the talent. Next, a comedy and song duo, the Dees, provided an hour of entertainment for PHS'ers. Their act featured singing, tales andjokes. Bill Tewson, a 1967 alumnus, returned to Parkrose to conduct and accompany the Fort Lewis Cadet Choir, outfitted with a host of musical instruments. They performed various vocal and instrumental pieces, including Christmas Carols, Army Ballads, and a Burt Bacharach medley. The conventional roles of males, females, parents and teenagers in today's society were reinforced and offered to the studnet body in a talk featuring Mr. Tex Yearout. Recorded versions of his speech were available in the student store following the assembly for future reference. American Field Service foreign exchange students, studying one year in suburban Portland high schools, visited PHS for AFS Week in the spring while staying with Parkrose families. They delivered an assembly program of musical, dancing and cultural talent at the high school and then shared with Parkrose students by visiting classes, attending an afternoon tea, and joining in the spirited AFS dance, 'fForeign Affair. Countries represented included Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, England, Ethiopia, Italy, Japan, Norway, and South Africa. Surprised Parkrose students were finally encountered by a free-flowing assembly which served to vent many long-repressed feelings, Student body election speeches in the year,s last assembly were followed by a question-answer session that eventually incited students to react to a level both rational and laced with emotion. XIZI fT -'fx 7-gr usic Under the direction of Mr. Thompson, the Band spent another busy and successful year. In addition to three concerts, the Symphonic Band performed in a Mini-Concert with the Choral Department and Junior High Band, while concluding the year with a five-day concert tour of Vancouver B.C.. The Pep Band provided music for all home football and basketball games as well as for the State Basketball Tournament. They marched in the Fun-O-Rama Parade, and took first place honors in the Merrykhana Parade competition. Outstanding Band members named at the close of the year were: sophomores Terry Vandenberg and Goose Maxwell, juniors Jan Bergland and Charlie Moore, and seniors Kathy DeMond and Rich Warrington. f'On to Europei' was the slogan behind most of the Choral Departmenfs activities this year. The American Heritage program selected the Parkrose Debonaires and Pony-Tones as groups they wished to sponsor on a six-week concert tour through eight European countries. Throughout the year, choral students sold candy and flairs, sponsored rummage sales, bazaars, movies and breakfasts, and gave many performances in order to raise their share of the 350,000 necessary to send the 54 students on the trip. Other major productions included a Fall Talent Show, the annual Christmas performance, and the spring musical, Guys and Dolls, which combined the talents of the Choral and Orchestral Music Departments. The Orchestra, directed by Mr. Williams, also presented a Fall Concert and a joint concert with Gresham High School. Assemblies The enthusiasm and interest at this year's pep assemblies seemed to bypass spirit and focus on the more controversial subject of how and when to pay respect' to our country. The Homecoming Pep Assembly was particularly hot-wired and eliminated further spirit-gathering attempts. Saluting the flag, however, remained a provocative issue, though the controversy was calmed within several weeks. Various sports assemblies were included throughout the year. The football and cross country teams were facilitated within fall season pep assemblies. The wrestlers hustled through a demonstration of their sport, while gymanstic strength, flexibility and grace later starred in another stunt display. Finally, a special assembly was called to honor the state tournament ticket earned by the 1971 Bronco Basketball Team. Quality surpassed quantity to highlight this year,s entertainment assemblies. The year began as the rock group, Chouch, led by Gary Ogan, was allotted the latter fifteen minutes of one school day to present an
