Baseball The Metro Baseball League played an essentially consistent season this spring with Parkrose finishing third in the first half and fifth in the season wrap-up. Coach Jerry Bettendorf explained that the 'Bronco club played very close contests. Either team could have won in any of the games, he said, g'And seven of our 16 league games were decided by a difference of only one runf, The seven-win, nine-loss season began with a 7-4 victory over Sunset. Jim Bjorkmanls early pitching wildness forfeited seven walks, five hits, and four runs, but Parkrose rallied to win with six runs during the last two innings. Jeff Phillips lobbed in Parkrose's first home run of the year in the 6-2 stomp over Lake Oswego. Pitcher Ron Hensel maintained a steady hill performance by allowing only two hits. Scoreless in the top of the ninth, Parkrose took Hillsboro 1-0 on a squeeze bunt by Cal Abts in one of the season's better games. Brad Lusby pitched shutout ball for nearly seven innings, benching 13 Spartans. Jim Murphy and Mike Baker finished the last two innings to total 17 strike-outs and two hits. A pitching duel left Parkrose downed by Aloha 1-0, followed by a 4-3 squeeze past David Douglas. Jim Bjorkman stopped the Scots with just five hits, while Rick Snell doubled in Steve Johnson and Paul Martin for the winning runs. Parkrose had trouble connecting and fell to Central Catholic 8-2. The next game also met with defeat, with Jesuit's four runs bettering the Bronco's three. A Beaverton rally in the sixth inning was blocked by pitchers Mike Baker and Ron Hensel, after Jim Murphy held the Beavers to three hits, no runs, and 12 strike-outs in the first tive innings. The Bronco hitting attack was also strong enough to down Beaverton 6-2, but it fell 4-0 to Sunset's powerful pitching performance later that week. Lake Oswego gave Parkrose its greatest upset with a dynamic seven-run take-off in the first inning and a 10-1 win over the Broncs. Pitcher Jim Murphy based the first seven men up and was relieved by Brad Lusby, who finished with scoreless pitching except for fifth and seventh inning uprisings. David Douglas required an extra inning to bat in their 3-2 win over Parkroseg while Aloha then proceeded to fall to the Broncs 3-2. Two of Parkrosels nine points in the following game against Jesuit were home runs by Steve Johnson and Jim Murphy. The Crusaders were unable to retaliate with more than five runs from their six hits. Jim Bjorkman's success in curbing all Central Catholic hits and runs in the first five innings of play exploded in the sixth period. Three Ram hits brought in six runs, leaving the final score 6-3. The season then ended with Mike Baker pitching shutout ball against Beaverton, except for three hits and two runs in the fourth inning. Parkrose, however, was unable to tally any runs from its five hits and was defeated. R 19 Ria. Qi . .X,, Ei, Q '1'f The Junior Varsity Baseball Team ended with a season of close games behind them, many of which were decided by the outcome of a single hit. Twelve of the year's seventeen games were left with a margin of only three runs or less. Pitchers were plagued by many injuries during the season. Leading with a 6-4 record, however, Marv Shum tossed in six of the team's seven wins. Scott McKern led the ranks in hitting followed'by Larry Baker.
