Friday was for school patriotism and a pep assembly, where included events were class competition skits and yells. Honors went to the senior skit recapping antics from Coach Allen,s youth, and to the Junior shout power. Other awards were given to the Junior class for their poster contest monopoly, to Lisa Jacobs for the most flower power, Liz Hopper for her outstanding hat, and John Shrock and Ginny Jorgensen for their best fashions of yesteryear. Culmination of Spirit Week was the Friday night Varsity football clash against Hillsboro, which was lost 29-0. Queen Cindy and her court reigned over the eveningls activities, which included music from the Shades of Night at the annual aftergame dance. Eleven-fifteen struck and brought a close to Homecoming 1970-71, a memorable event to some, yet unnoticed by others. Queen Cindy summarized it best when she said, Homecoming is the biggest event of the year. Swimmin Coach Tom Anderson and the boys swim team had a successful season with eight wins and three losses. The Broncs splashed their way to thirteenth place at the State Meet, with a sixth-place freestyle relay including Taylor, Bauer, Kneidl, and Fredricks. Swimming for the team were: ,Stan Carper, Chuck Taylor, Rick Bauer, Willard Kneidl, Steve Fredricks, Dave Powell, and Jerry Yap. Divers included Tim Long, Rick Scrivens, Doug Clayton, Rock Haglund, and Charlie Moore. Stan Carper bettered the state AAU record by swimming the 100-yard butterfly in 52.2 seconds. This qualified him for the National lnterscholastic All American Swim Team. A leg injury, however, prevented him from finishing the swimming season. The girl's team, coached' by Mrs. Ann Beeman, did well for its number of girls. At the District Meet, Parkrose members Mary McCartney, Brenda Scrivens, Elaine Dorsett, and Debbie Peters placed fifth in the freestyle relay.

Cross Countr Parkrose legged through a four-win, four-loss season to rank fourth in the District Cross Country Meet. Dave Bernardy tagged a 12:44 time for second place, while Paul Harris ran twelfth, Bob Bambaugh fifteenth, and Dave Reed twenty-third. Qualifying for the regional contest at Pier Park, Bernardy set a new course record of l2:31.1 to nab first place and the right to attend the state trials in Eugene. Clocking a 13:12 third place at the state meet, Dave travelled the soggy Lane Community College course scarcely one second away from finishing second. Scott Jackson of Grant High and Mark Fieg of South Eugene outran him to the finish line. Top team holdings were shared by Lake Oswego and South Eugene. The Parkrose cross country record of 13:01, set in 1967 by Doug Wellman, was bettered three times this year. Axeman Charlie Jordon and Bronco Dave Bernardy both improved this time in the Lake Oswego meet, with respectable times of 12:35 and 12:46. Later in the season at the Parkrose Invitational, Bernardy shaved one minute, thirty-six seconds off the 1967 holding, clocking in at 12:05. Dave showed outstanding endurance and stability during the eight-meet season, earning seven first places and one second. The Junior Varsity came out ahead with three wins and two losses. They will constitute a strong backbone for next yearis team. To sum up the situation, Coach Gary Reichelt stated that, 'gPotentially we had the best team in three years but things just didn't fall right. He looks forward to taking the team to state next year. omecomin Homecoming 1970 was met this year with varied reactions ranging from enthusiasm to apathy. Traditional activities were carried on as before, although participation came from a smaller percentage of students than in previous years. Various meetings and evaluations took place in an attempt to find new and meaningful avenues of participation to include the wider scope of interests in the school. Opening the doors of competition and ceremony, the week began with reverse twirp day and the coronation assembly. Monday morning blues added shades of silver, burgundy and pink in the assembly where Queen Cindy I was crowned. Each princess was escorted for her curtsy along a carpeted walkway linking a flowered archway to the seating platform. The Parkrose Stage Band accompanied the rites and the Debonaires sang Musette in honor of the teary new 1970-71 Homecoming Queen, Cindy Carlson. Her court included seniors Dawn Deffenbaugh and Debbie Rands: juniors Jan Clark and Diane Herrington: and sophomores Karla Lorentson and Debbie Peter. Tuesday fell into Flower Power Day and success for the annual P.F.A. Spaghetti Dinner. The rally and Pep Band then entertained at the annual bonfire, complete with its traditional spark and flaming outhouse. Wednesday was Hat Day and Thursday, Old Fashioned Day.
