oreign Exchange JODY FREY The American Field Service Scholarship is only one of many available foreign study programs attempting to open avenues of communication and promote peace throughout the world by building personal relationships. Students are adopted by foreign families for either one year or for the three summer months to participate in and reach an understanding of life in another culture. It is the depth of these warm personal relationships that inspires the AFS moto: Walk together, talk together, all ye peoples of the earth. Then and only then will there be peace. The Parkrose community hosted AFS exchange student, Patrick Cockx, for the 1970-71 school year. He left his home and studies in Borgerhout, Belguim to join the William Andrews family in Parkrose. Actively participating in the high school, Pat was a member of various clubs and was noted for the introduction of 'La Bamba', the Belgiam Kissing Dance. Named an Oregon Scholar, Pat received a certificate of Commendation from Governor McCall for ranking sixteenth in his class with a 3.82 GPA. Parkrose is proud and grateful to have shared a year with Patrick. The small industrial town of Rafaela, Argentina was the new home found for Jody Frey, Parkroseis student selected to live abroad as an AFS foreign exchange student. Jody's Argentine family during the summer of 1970 included her parents, Ricardo and Nelida Gerbaudo, and one sister, Liliana. Living among Rafaela's Spanish speaking people, Jody attended school, experienced a new way of life, and made many life-long friends. PAT COCKX Also at Parkrose for short term stays were three Costa Rican students under the Alliance for Progress. This program for reciprocal student exchanges has just recently been established between Costa Rica and Oregon, allowing students to live with two families during their respective summer vacations. The Costa Rican girls at Parkrose, Flor-Maria Aguilar Heredia, Jeannette Garcia-Ruiz, and Liliana Cortes, attended high school while living one month with the families of Marian Vaughn, Jody Frey and Debbie Rands. 179
