i-Q Team Parkrose was well represented in KGW's High-Q games, televised on Channel 8. Selection was tough, and Mike McLafferty, Ed Norman, Todd Schwartz, Bob Sherman, and Jerry Brown survived preliminary and semi-final trials to comprise the Parkrose team. Practice hours with Coach Amy Scheef stretched nearly three weeks in advance to prepare for the matches. A wide knowledge of history, literature, art, math, science, and music is needed to succeed in this game, which is patterned after College Bowl. Parkrose swept victory away from Sweet Home in the first taping. Led by captain Mike McLafferty, Parkrose held the lead throughout the contest, taking seven of the ten high-point bonus questions. A Booster bus and private transportation brought nearly 80 people to watch as Parkrose took their opponents 210-65. A film summarizing recent accumulative accomplishments in Parkrose activities and curriculum was aired during halftime to aquaint the viewers with our school. The narrative stressed the responsibility of keeping the student an individual. The second game brought approximately 60 Parkrose boosters and a series of technical taping difficulties. The problems were cleared up but Corvallis took an early lead and defeated Parkrose 295-85. This eliminated the Parkrose team from further competition but the intelligence, adeptness and good spirit shown were truly an asset to Parkrose accomplishments. oothall lt was a building year again for the Parkrose Broncos, and though we were badly crippled by injuries, team spirit never lagged. '4We thought it was a satisfying yearf, commented Coach Cliff Allen, And we got a lot of experiencef, Fourteen starters and twenty-six lettermen will return next year. The 1970-71 season began as Parkrose edged Beaverton. Excitement ran high as Parkrose led the half 20-14, with touchdowns by Lindsay Johnston, Ron Albertson, and Cal Abts. Bob Hamann slipped through in the fourth quarter to give Parkrose the lead. The Broncs kept their narrow lead with over eight minutes of fine defensive play, finishing with a 28-26 win. Sunset consistently outcharged the Broncs, and Parkrose fell with five fumbles and two interceptions to its name. The Apollos battered the Broncs with score after score and not until the last twenty-two seconds of the contest did Bob Hamann prevent a shut-out. Final score: 48-8 Determination to prove the sportswriters wrong resulted in improved passing, offense and defense. Cal Abts scored in the second quarter and Lindsay Johnston in the third, but Lake Oswego bettered us with three tallies and outscored the Broncs 21-12. The David Douglas Scots skirted the Broncos 48-28. Halfback Lindsay Johnston and quarterback Cal Abts each raced twice over the Douglas goal line, setting the halftime score at 6-28. Parkrose gained an easy win over Franklin of the PIL league. Cal Abts starred with passes for four I

touchdowns and two conversions. Lindsay Johnston scored in the first quarter, while the second round saw action from the Quakers and Broncs Jim Murphy and Jeff Butts. Parkrose held the lead at the half 22-7. Taking off from Cal Abt's 55-yard pass, Murphy again tallied, with Franklin rebounding, and Paul Sehuberg scoring to close the third quarter. A Jon Goorlling touchdown left the scoreboard reading Parkrose 44. Franklin l3. One week later the tide turned as a scoreless fall to Hillsboro put Parkrose on a sour note for its Homecoming activities. The Spartans lanced 59 yards for their first points and the Broncos followed with what looked like a touchdown run. A clipping penalty called the play back, however, and Parkrose was unable to rebound. ln the second half, the Spartans added three TD7s to shut out the Broncs 29-0. Another taste of victory with a 20-6 win over Aloha rewarded Parkrose fans in the last conquest on home territory. Aloha bulldozed to the Bronco eight as the game began, but a block by Rick Snell promptly curtailed the attack and sent the ball the other way. Scoring came in the middle ofthe second quarter when Ron Albertson and Lindsay Johnston barrelled the score to a 14-O halftime lead. Lindsay ran for another touchdown in the third quarter, while the Warriors gained their only score after a run of over fifty yards. Bronco defense corralled the ball for nearly eight scoreless minutes,,leaving the game to Parkrose. Halloween night saw a near upset against Central Catholic at Multnomah Civic Stadium. The ball ping-ponged until the second quarter when Parkrose scored eight. Tim Raxter, subbing a second week for injured quarterback Cal Abts, fired a seven-yard touchdown pass to Ron Albertson for that score. The half ended in an 8-6 Bronco lead after a Ram tally. Midway through the final quarter, Central Catholic picked up another six points. An interception then spooked Bronco hopes, giving Central the game 12-8. Parkrose left the season with a two-win, seven-loss record as it fell to Jesuit. The Crusaders drove in two touchdowns during the first quarter, waiting until the third to boost the score to 19-O. The Bronco ground and aerial attacks were all unsuccessful and the deepest penetration made was a move to the Crusader twenty-yard line. Jesuit again tallied on a 60-yard run in the final quarter. This left the last game at 26-0, closing the curtain on a hard fought, injury-prone year on the Parkrose football field. Coach Bill Maloney was impressed with the persistence ofhis hardworking Junior Varsity football team. Impressive, too, was the backbone of encouragement and help offered by the subs and manager. The final clash with Central Catholic was if typical showing of the team fortitude and unity. Parkrose was the only school that held an initial two-touchdown lead over the Rams, who ended with 8-O-l season record. At the season's close, the Broncs lost the game, but still proved to be the best competitors who played against this top team. Soccer The Parkrose Soccer Team began the season with a good turnout and high hopes. As the season progressed, though, the Senior membership quickly dwindled to a mere three, taking the mainstay of the team's power. The Broncos suffered several losses due to their lack of aggressiveness and experience. Coach Dusan Pasic believes that in spite of this year's problems, the future looks good for the team because of the number of underclassmen and upcoming freshmen interested in soccer.
