i-Q Team Parkrose was well represented in KGW's High-Q games, televised on Channel 8. Selection was tough, and Mike McLafferty, Ed Norman, Todd Schwartz, Bob Sherman, and Jerry Brown survived preliminary and semi-final trials to comprise the Parkrose team. Practice hours with Coach Amy Scheef stretched nearly three weeks in advance to prepare for the matches. A wide knowledge of history, literature, art, math, science, and music is needed to succeed in this game, which is patterned after College Bowl. Parkrose swept victory away from Sweet Home in the first taping. Led by captain Mike McLafferty, Parkrose held the lead throughout the contest, taking seven of the ten high-point bonus questions. A Booster bus and private transportation brought nearly 80 people to watch as Parkrose took their opponents 210-65. A film summarizing recent accumulative accomplishments in Parkrose activities and curriculum was aired during halftime to aquaint the viewers with our school. The narrative stressed the responsibility of keeping the student an individual. The second game brought approximately 60 Parkrose boosters and a series of technical taping difficulties. The problems were cleared up but Corvallis took an early lead and defeated Parkrose 295-85. This eliminated the Parkrose team from further competition but the intelligence, adeptness and good spirit shown were truly an asset to Parkrose accomplishments. oothall lt was a building year again for the Parkrose Broncos, and though we were badly crippled by injuries, team spirit never lagged. '4We thought it was a satisfying yearf, commented Coach Cliff Allen, And we got a lot of experiencef, Fourteen starters and twenty-six lettermen will return next year. The 1970-71 season began as Parkrose edged Beaverton. Excitement ran high as Parkrose led the half 20-14, with touchdowns by Lindsay Johnston, Ron Albertson, and Cal Abts. Bob Hamann slipped through in the fourth quarter to give Parkrose the lead. The Broncs kept their narrow lead with over eight minutes of fine defensive play, finishing with a 28-26 win. Sunset consistently outcharged the Broncs, and Parkrose fell with five fumbles and two interceptions to its name. The Apollos battered the Broncs with score after score and not until the last twenty-two seconds of the contest did Bob Hamann prevent a shut-out. Final score: 48-8 Determination to prove the sportswriters wrong resulted in improved passing, offense and defense. Cal Abts scored in the second quarter and Lindsay Johnston in the third, but Lake Oswego bettered us with three tallies and outscored the Broncs 21-12. The David Douglas Scots skirted the Broncos 48-28. Halfback Lindsay Johnston and quarterback Cal Abts each raced twice over the Douglas goal line, setting the halftime score at 6-28.
