Q-'fl ,Q ,- v V Q Q Parkrose never had a bad year in the Wilco League and this year was no exception. The Broncs fin- ished their last season in the league with an 8-1 record. The Bronco defense was a key factor in a fine season. Seniors Alan Tuttle, Ken Reed, Roger Keller, Paul Keck, Drake Snodgrass, and Jerry Hagist, helped form one of the best defenses in the state. Our offense, led by quarterback Steve Jones and end Lee Welch, was just as good. Both Steve and Lee were named to All-State teams. The offense had a systematic and versatile attack behind a strong front wall. Two of the best games came against tough Wy'east and the greatly improved Canby Cougars. Three outstanding seniors were Lee Welch, voted the most outstanding player, Jack Robertson, who gained the most yardage, and Steve Jones, whose passing ability helped make him one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Team captains were Lee Welch, Steve Jones, and Alan Tuttle. 13 'QW , , 'E A X . Thirty-four girls from all classes participated. They practiced every day during a regular period and had some rehearsals in the evenings. The girls had two outfits, one consisting of black skirts and vests, and the other con- sisting of pink jumpers with polka dot blouses. During football season the girls made up their own dances in accordance with the halftime band program. They also participated in the band formations on the field. The Bronco Hi-lites again made up new dances for basketball season. They danced at the Holiday Classics in Lake Oswego. l5 J.V. Football 1967 was a year of uncertainties for J.V. football. When up they played very well, when down they played an unorganized game. ln the Metro League they will be able to rise up to the challenge with the experience and maturity that they gained this year. This year was marred by the loss of their friend and team mate, Joe Moore, who was killed in an auto accident. They will remember Joe next year as they meet the challenge of playing in the Metro League. This person's spirit will be missed next year. Cross Country The Cross Country Team had their best season. At the district meet they placed second out of the nine teams that participated. Out of twenty-four teams that competed at the state meet, Parkrose finished thirteenth. During the regular season the Cross Country team beat every team except The Dalles. Parkrose had runners finish in the first five places in all meets, except against The Dalles, Wy'east, and Molalla. Twice Parkrose runners captured the first seven places. The team con- sisted of five seniors: Doug Wellman, John Reed, Pete Borden, Tom Sleeth, and Craig Johndohl: five juniors: Mike Keyes, Paul Williams, Lee Skinner, Kirby Warner, Chuck Hag- lund: and seven sophomores: Jim Reed, Steve Ominski, Rick Hancock, Bob Brown, Jim Hawkins, Randy Sprick, and Greg Haslett. Swimming The boys lost once, to Beaverton. This loss ended Parkrose's record victory streak. At the district meet, the girls placed first and the boys finished second. The coaches, Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Beeman, said that superb individual efforts made up for the shortage of personnel. The swim team had a highly suc- cessful year. The girls won thirteen meets and lost one. The boys won twelve meets and lost one. Chris Sporano, Gayle Kimberley, and Sue Henderson provided the individu- al talent for the girls' swim team. They lead the team in scoring through- out the season. Lary Strong, Mike Hadley, Bob Rubin, and Stan Carper were the outstanding swimmers on the boys' team. Returned travellers who brought items of interest for the members to see were the highlights of the program and dinner evenings held by this club. Los Aficianados Members of Los Aficianados enjoyed many Latin- flavored experiences throughout the year. Several dinners were organized during the school year to familiarize the students with foreign foods and cultures. The Spanish CIub's main project for the year was the sponsoring of a small Mexican orphan, Angel Garcia. Throughout the year, the club received correspondence from their charge. One of the most interesting undertakings was the Spanish IV student's trip to Mexico this summer. Senor Horswell is the advisor to this culture- steeped club. Ski Team The members of the Parkrose Ski Club spent every Saturday during January and February skiing at Multi- por. Extra stamina is required to spend a whole day skiing on the snowy slopes. Lettermen's Club The Lettermen's Club is open to all -boys who have earned a Parkrose High School varsity letter. The members provided service to the school in many capacities, including the operation of the change booth in the cafetorium all year. They gathered wood for the Homecoming Bonfire, and also sponsored the annual Sweethearts' Ball. Advanced senior English classes have uti- lized seminar to its utmost with a free interplay of thoughts and ideas. Both senior and advanced ju- nior students take a specialized look at English literature through a blend of films, lectures, and creative writing. Those students participating in the Humanities courses blend English with other forms of expression such as drama, music and art. The future looks bright for the English department with the pos- sible additions of new elective courses which encompass the goals and ideals of the total stu- dent. if i 6 w 1 I Art The different fields of art are interesting and useful. A student is taught about colors, forms, textures, shapes, and howto usethem effectively. Having learned this, he works with water colors, chalk, and ink. The more advanced students use silk screens, clay, and oils. Two main assets arise from this class, an in- crease in student perception, and the develop- ment of free, creative expression. The cultiva- tion of individuality leads to ideas for a better community. Music This year proved to be one of the Choral Depart- ment's busiest. Besides the fall and spring con- certs, the Debonaires sang at a banquet for Gov- ernor McCall, were finalists at the Speech Arts Festival, and were the official entertainment at the Oregon Junior Miss Pageant. Assisted by the orchestra, the Choral Department wound up their year with the traditional spring musical. The band made many contributions to our school, supporting our school spirit and performing at pep assemblies and at half-time during the games. ln the fall, winter, and spring, they staged con- certs, playing music from all areas. In competi- tion at the Wilco League Band Festival, 22 of our students were placed in the Honor Band. At graduation they played the Alma Mater, closing the year of 1967-68. Working hard they won all of their dual and triangular meets, took district, and then went on to state. At state, Doug Wellman took second place in the mile run. The 440 relay, consisting of Alhberg, Fike, Ominski, and Shifferdecker, took a third place at the meet. In the field events, Fike took a third in the long jump. Together the team earned the highest number of points Parkrose has ever scored at a state meet. This season two records were broken as the 440 relay team set a new time of 43.8. The second record was made by the mile relay team consisting of Alhberg, Ominski, Ried- miller, and Wellman for 3:31.0. The skills gained in these classes are just as beneficial to those who go on to col lege as they are to those who secure jobs after graduation. Attractive and creative decorations set the scene for this evening of fun and enjoyment. Seniors were kept active dancing, swimming, playing games, and eating. A breakfast of ham and eggs was served at 4 A.M., to all those who had managed to build up an appetite during the night. We owe our thanks to all of our parents for making our all night party such a wonderful and special occasion. l6l up- ' .-A E M if The Barbary Coast TEN Class of '68 As their high school years come to a close, the Class of '68 will remember the many rewarding experiences and achievements that were made here at Parkrose High. The seniors have provided outstand- ing leadership and service to our school, and their marks will long remain. As they graduate and leave the halls of Parkrose, learning to make a future for themselves, we wish them the best of luck in whatever they do. Their first chance to participate in activities came when they e- lected their class officers. Under the leadership of Stan Gacek, Dave Hume, Anne Bargar, Denise Moak, and Barbara Marker, the Class of '70 made many plans for money-making projects, dances, and contests. The Class of '70 was the first class to adopt their own colors, flower, motto, and song, during the sophomore year. They hope to follow their motto- We came, we saw, we conquered. Anderson As this school year ends one must express pessimism concerning mankind's ability to live together in a reasonable and realistic manner. The current state of world and domes- tic affairs brings no logical alternative to this conclusion. No matter howdim the prospects for solutions seem to be at this time, there is a strong ray of hope, and this resides in you, the youth of our nation. Your responsibility is grave and inescapable. Through your educational and personal development to this point, and through the same kind of further development in the future, must come whatever improve- ments and advances we will be able to ex- perience in the years to come. We find ourselves doubting, questioning and protesting. In my opinion, these activities are necessary ingredients ofchange and progress. However, they are not enough. They must be coupled with the seeking of answers, the de- veloping of realistic alternatives, and the building of a faith that the task of improve- ment can be accomplished. The road is not clearly marked and is very surely bumpy. However, the trip is inevitable. The world must have the best of everything that is in the youth of today. The challenge is obvious, and l urge you to accept it with determination. J. W. There is no doubt that we owe a debt of thanks to the bus drivers who make it their job to see to it that everyone gets to and from school safely. 230 FENCE COMPANY Inc MATERIALS and INSTALLATION 3100 N W 315T AVE TOR E HENDRICKSON PORTLAND OREGON 97210 228 2133 For Servlce Thai' s KEEN See ERNIE RUDEEN PHILLIPS 66 1113. , 'jaw GFI I 1 if NME 'WK Parson urtuarg Funeral Counselors and DIFSCTOFS 223 EDLITHEAET IZZN AVENUE PORTLAND IJREGDN 97233 253 7551 PARKROSE PHARMACY We Gave S82H Green Stamps 10518 N E Sandy 253 8518 EVERIST BROS , Inc AUTO SPECIALISTS GIJIERIIL MOIURS mul c T nsm ss o Elect cal Tu Up Brakes Algnment V I :Wok REPAIR , 2 SERVICE 7305N E FREMQNT sr COPELAND YARDS 10279 N E sandy Blvd AL 3 7503 FIRST NATIONAL OF OREGON LOANS FOR ANY PURPOSE When a personal need of any kmd fmds you short of cash your best bargaln for the money you need IS a loan from Furs Natuonal Bank Loan costs are low servlce IS fast and loans are tallored to sunt your payment wlshes 122nd 8: Halsey Branch fgjgg XFULL 76 GAS STATION 12110 N E sandy 254 3026 Telephone AL 3 0336 Iluhertas Beauty Salon ROBERTA HUDSON 717' 10404 N E Sandy Blvd Portland Oregon 97220 Q 'ls Z I . 5 ' J W V. . 11RESIDE I - n I 'I I I rj' '13, rf Y 1: IL 4.63.
