This was the third rough one in a row. After thirteen years as the advisor to the Torch I seem to have lost my ability to motivate the staff to do what must be done. This will be the last of “my” yearbooks at Park Falls High School. The next Torch will be advised by Mr Dave Boettcher and it is my sincere hope that every student and every member of the staff will assist him in any and every way possible. One of the ever-present problems we’ve faced over the years is the expectation by the majority of the students that the Torch will be produced by “somebody else” and that they don’t need to be involved. If that attitude continues the Torch will go the way of Homecoming Parades and other traditions. A very special and heart-felt thanks goes out to Carol Peterson. Carol came back after graduation and did many hours of work that others were either unwilling or unable to do. I doubt very much that you would have this book without her efforts. Many others contributed to the completion of this book over the course of the year and I don’t mean to slight them or their efforts but Carol’s efforts completed the task and kept the efforts of all the others from being wasted. The lack of a staff picture is symbolic of the problem you face if you wish the Torch to survive. As I complete this edi- tion of the Torch there is no staff. E. G. Park Falls had one of its finest seasons in history as the Cards compiled a 23-5 record and qualified for the state tournament for the second time in three years. The Cards captured the Bessemer tournament, as well as the Ironwood Classic, and the Regional Championship for the second consecutive season. The only flaw in the season was a second place finish in Conference play. Numerous individual honors were achieved with Mike Kronberger being chosen “Conference player of the year” for the second straight season. Other first team performers were Dan Armstrong, Ken Weindorfer, and Mike Hebert. Honorable mention choices were Jeff Litwaitis, Jay Ferkovich, and Bob Herbst. The Cards in “85” will be a young team with Bob Herbst the on- ly returning senior letterman. With many talented juniors and sophomores the future looks bright for Cardinal baseball. 21 Front Row P Pritzl. J Bourgard. J Bourgard. B Setterman. J Schmidt. C Woelfel. T Weik Second Row J Little. Coach Larson The 1984 football season was disap- pointing in terms of wins and losses. The team finished a 2-7 with four games being lost by a total of 5 points. The bright spot was the fact the ball players never gave up and worked as hard and with as much pride at the end of the season as they did at the start. Two players were named First Team All Conference. Mike Rose on defense and Bob Herbst on offense. Mike Rose won the “Most Valuable Player” award. 22 Football Front Row Mike Ball. Dennis Behreandt. Dan Racette Wrestling The 1984-1985 Wrestling team compiled a 6-4 dual record, finishing tied for second place in the Lumberjack Conference race. The team was young by most standards con- sisting of three freshman, three sophmores and six juniors. Despite this seeming disad- vantage of inexperience on the mat. Card grapplers worked well together and had a very successful season. To be sure, this was a team of the future. Five of our battlers qualified for the WIAA Sectional Tourna- ment. They were: 112-Troy Weik, 126-John Bourgard, 155-Bill Neeck, 185-Paul Noetzel, Hwt-Dan Racette. Coaches Saunders and Rand were pleased with the season. “We’ve got a powerful nucleus returning next season. They provided a great deal of pleasure and excitement this season. Next year they should prove very formidable,” stated Coach Saunders. 32 Cheer Leaders Action! Boys’ Track — 1985 1st Row, Left to Right: Pat Herbst, Brian Mrotek, Dan Lobermier, Rick Lepper.
