This year the Mixed Choir was greatly involved in vocal development and tonal balance. This the second year that male voices were included in 7th hour choir and these voices added depth to an already delightful choral sound. Also, VICA has a goal of inspiring and develop- ing leadership ability in students. One way VICA accomplishes these goals is by holding a National Skills Olympics. The Skills Olympics is a statewide compe- tition between schools in the various in- dustrial and vocational fields. At Park Falls High School all students in the Advanced Power Mechanics. Voca- tional Graphics. Capstone Metals, and Ad- vanced Building Trades classes are VICA members. This is only the second year students from Park Falls High School have been involved in the VICA organization, but they are ex- pecting a good showing in the skills com- petitions. A major addition to the IMC this year has been four Apple comput- ers. The computers were pur- chased with Federal funds to be used in the Business Education and Mathematics departments. When the computers are not in the classroom, they are made available for student use. Working as aides in the library this year were: Andy Kalvin. Patsy Lyon. Lisa Lobermeier. Steve Ei- trem. Pete Venuta and Bill Ball. 53 This was an exciting sound year for the Park Falls chapter of Future Business Leaders of America. In addition to the regular activities and fund rais- ing schemes. members of the chapter assisted the Park Falls Revitalization Steering Com- mittee by typing surveys and providing secretaries for their meetings. This year the chapter really put Park Falls on the map by host- ing the Region II Leadership Conference on Saturday. Feb- ruary 12. 1983. Cardinals The anticipated record for the 1982 Cards looked rather bleak at the on set of the season with only three starters coming back from the contending ’81 team. Coach Bouche' had to fill seven- teen positions with young and inexperi- enced ball players. With this type of situation, the '82 record could easily have been 0-9 or 1-8. but with strong leadership from K. Knutson. P. Schmidt, and T. Hebert, the Cards surprised themselves and many people who came to watch them perform. The stiff competition that the Cards faced, along with the inexperience the team had. helped the team to develop strong character. Because of this, this season was very successful. The real surprise to the area came when the '82 campaign was ended with a 4-5 record. Many people realized it was an uphill battle with the onslaught of injuries to key people. Reflecting back on the sea- son. the fans perceived that if a few breaks would have gone the Cards way. it could have easily been a 7-2 season. Congratulations to all the Cards for giv- ing Park Falls another exciting football season. Special Congratulations go to Kirk Knutson. Jay Ferkovich. Karshna The season began on a very strong note with three returning starters: Alice Barbelh. Jenny Jehn. and Ann Kemper, joined by two other return- ing letter winners: Donna Habas and Ann Leitl. Early predictions placed the Cardinal girls in contention for the Conference title. Unfortunately, the predictions were far from accu- rate. The team rarely played a con- sistent match and defeated only four opponents. According to Coach Greenwood. We never came to- gether as everyone expected. It was a long emotional season, but the girls were always good sports and good friends. Alice Barbeln placed second team All-Conference and Deena Sturm and Ann Kemper were given Honor- able Mention. Teamwork was the key to a winning season for the Junior Varsity volley- ball team. Even after a number of personnel changes, the squad kept its team spirit and with energy and determination Bnished the year with a 8-4 record. This is the first year that the Junior Varsity team consist- ed of freshmen, sophomores and ju- niors. Concentration on the fundamentals of bumps, sets, spikes, and serves enabled the squad to put it all to- gether during their games. Improve- ment was seen in every player, and the squad should look forward to a very successful season next year. The Freshman Volleyball team had a good season this year. They are a great group of girls and will prove to be a future asset to the Junior Varsi- ty squad. Also, this was the first year that Freshman members were pro- moted speaking directly of Erin Mader and Shelly Sczelagowski. Great season galsl Freshman hard at workI Golf Dan The Man Ames. The team will have better bench strength than it has in the past, but the real question will be the front line. With the conference obviously improved, the Cards are going to need to come up with a cohesive unit that can play aggressive defense and pa- tient offense if they are to be successful at all. Special Thanks to Therese Kovarik for the help in the printing process. Also, special thanks to Jenny Jehn for helping us meet our final deadline. At the beginning of the 1982-83 school year Kris and I thought that editing the Torch as Juniors would be fairly easy. As the year went on we found out we were wrong. This book was an experiment for Kris and I. A year ago we were just general staff, now we find ourselves co-editors of a several thousand dollar book. It's been hard. Some Seniors weren't very happy with the Juniors running the show, which made it extra hard, but we survived. Our staff was small, but they were the best staff we could have asked for. They put in a lot of time and effort. They deserve everyone's thanks. We hope you enjoy this year's TORCH.
