AT WORK The 1979-1980 Torch Staff spent many long hours of hard work to put together a book filled with treasured memories. Throughout the year there were dead- lines to meet. If one of these were missed there would not be a book. Everyone had to work very hard to meet each deadline. The Torch Staff consists of about 20 peo- ple, which include Photographers, Typ- ists, and Staff Members who design the pages of the book. At the present time the Torch is in running for the “Big E” Award. Above: left to right, Mr. Busby going crazy Weber and Patti Thibedeau find a place on after a hard meeting. Karen's hard at work. Out of these twenty, three are elected by the students one is appointed by the English Teacher, and one is the class President. Throughout the year, the Student Council raised money for scholarships for two deserving Seniors at the end of the year. One way we raised money was sponsoring the annual Winter Carnival. This years Council worked very hard solving some of the problems of the new school. The prob- lem most debated was the question of having a smoking area for the new school. Some other prob- lems we faced were the concessions in the new school, the seating arrangement in the new gym, and many other problems. The Student Council would like to thank our ad- visor, Mr. Warshall, and Mr. Ross for their many hours of help and support. Officers: Julie Vuchetich, Tami Scharp, Jenni Jehn. Theresa Kanikula and Cindy Barbein were the girls that were chosen for their scho- lastic ability and extracurricular activity. The girls attended Bad- ger State from June 10 to June 16. Each girl there ran for offices. Cindy was elected to County Su- pervisor and Theresa held the Deputy County Clerk position. The three boys that attended Bad- ger Boys State were Jim Gehr- man, Jon Patterson, and John Vu- chetich. The boys went from June 16 to June 23. The boys were also chosen on a basis of scholastic ability and extracurricular activ- ity. Badger State brought many fine young people together. All that attended had a good time and had the chance to participate in a great learning experience. Pic- tured at the left are the Badger State representatives. This year the students of Park Falls High School had the chance to use a brand new library. The new library is a lot bigger and more modern than the old one. The library is under the direction of Mr. Burant. The library do ev- erything from returning books to the shelves to checking books in and out, to filling catalogue cards. Some of the library aides are also in charge of setting up of the audio-visual equipment. The li- brary aides give up their study hall to work in the library. Al- though the school doesn’t offer any credits for this work, we greatly appreciate it. Pictured at the right are this years library aides. 55 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mr. Delwiche is the National Honor Soci- ety Advisor this year. Back Row: John Vuchtich, Tony Jirschele. Paul Kemper. The Cards were a physical team that could play with anyone, but because of many youthful errors, the Cards beat themselves in cru- cial situations. Although errors were made the young Cards were able to learn and improve from those inopportune mis- takes. By the end of the season, the Cards had reached their peak, and they were playing at the top of their game. Because of the strong leadership from the senior lettermen, Jim Gehr- man, John Patterson, John Morgan, and Mark Little, the young Cards have established a sturdy foundation to build on for the future. “Look out for the Cards in 1980!” Left: Cards show their skills, center left: Practice hard boys! The Quarterback Tim Herbert (freshmen) showed great prom- ise for the future. He threw two touchdown passes in the victo- ry over Tomahawk. Tim Don- ner (sophomore) had great strength as a running back. Others that helped the team are Jim Gehrman (senior) and Mark Armstrong (sophomore) Coach German says one weakness the team had was the inability to practice together. The 2-6 record fails to show the effort and dedication the Freshmen put into the season. After going 1-1 the first two games, we lost our fine quarterback, suffered injuries to key players, and spent the rest of the season shifting players to field a team. Standouts were our co-captains Dave Messerschmidt and Kirk Knutson, our “mighty mite” Brad Larson, and dependable Chris Schmidt. Jim Gehrman and Bill Hilgart were both sectional champions and represented Park Falls in the state tourna- ment. Coach Swenson was pleased with this years team stating that all twelve of the varsity wrestlers contributed to the team. The five seniors were our big winners. The juniors were consistant, and the 3 freshman improved as the year pro- gressed. This years conference championship was the fourth in five years for the Cardinals. Coming off a strong 9-3 Freshman season in 1978-1979, the Sophomores anticipated a duplication of this feat. As J.V. they had to work harder for a win than some of their taller opponents; it was for this reason that it was impari- tive for the J.V. to play well all the time. Outside of three games in the eighteen game schedule, the J.V. were in every one right up to the last buzzer. Many of the opposing teams consisted of experienced Junior ball players, which sooner or later took its toll on the young and inexperienced Cards. The Cards, made up of all Sophomores and one Freshman, were exciting to watch no matter if they won or Tost. With growth, maturity and experience this Cardinal team will be a team to watch in the future. The Freshman Boys finished with a 1-11 win-lost record. The only win came at home against Tomahawk. Al- though our record was disappointing we did make much improvement as the season went on, as can be seen in the scores. Leading scorers for the year were Tim Dane and Vince Weiberger. Vince Venuta was the top rebounder and a consistent scorer. J. V. GIRLS BASKETBALL Standing: Susan Vincent, Jane Higart. Trish Kalvin, Jean Woefel, Rene Gelina.
