Mr. Busby has been at Lincoln for five years. He has taught history. Marriage and Family Living and Pho- tography. He has been yearbook advi- sor and has done a majority of the photography work for the torch in the past. This years staff, and staffs of the past, would like to thank Mr. Busby for all the trials and tribulations he has put up with in order to make the yearbooks of the last five years a success. Without the help and guidance of Mr. Edward Busby, there would be no yearbook. 2 The Roads And now the snow is falling and I am coming to a crossroads in my life. The roads of strength and weakness divide before me. They go deep into these woods. Which one shall 1 wander on? Which one shall I take? It is not an easy question. These snowflakes hide the smoothness of their stones. These trees they hide the passage of their trails. These two roads twist and turn — I can not see their ends. Which one shall I take? I have wandered down the middle for so many, many years. Small decisions I have made, but never this great need to choose. Oh, which road shall I wander on? — Ellis Felker Celebrate the sunset and the sunrise the cold and the warm the sounds and the silences the voices of the children. Celebrate the dreams and hopes Which have filled the souls of All decent men and women. We shall lift our glasses and toast with tears of joy. — Leonard Nimoy L Cracked reflections of the past breaking into my todays. Good Gladys Schneider Ethel Poetzl Ann Balzar Olive Hickey Many times the cooks at L. H. S. are taken for granted, but we really appreciate them. In the morning they provided us with hot cereals, toast, pancakes, milk and a variety of juices. They also provided a well-balanced noon lunch. The cooks of L. H. S. are hardworking. They not only prepared the meals, but they also dusted the ledges and railings around the school. Clean, Cleaner, Cleanest The overall appear- ance of any school is due to the hardwork of custodians and their helpers. It seemed like the students were al- ways losing personal items such as gloves, hats, and shoes. They also lost or seemed to lose their text books, notebooks and folders. To the dismay of some students the janitors usually found them. At various times of the year; such as dur- ing football, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, and track the janitors took on extra chores. We would like to thank the L. H. S. cus- todial staff for main- taining the appearance of the school this past year. Photo Essay By Marla Miller Each person in Mr. Busby’s photography classes is required to make an essay of at least six pictures. The purpose of the essay is to put together, as effectively as possible, a series of pictures that tell a story. The student is to use as many techniques as he she can that have been covered in the class over the semester. Of all the essays handed in, this one by Marla Miller seemed to be the best done. She used the old “getting caught in the class passing notes” dilema. Has this ever happened to you? VMS New Outlook For Torch Staff ABOVE: Students that worked on the yearbook were FIRST ROW: Cindy Weiss, Debbie Engel and Patty Thibcdcau; SECOND ROW: Lee Erickson, Carolyn Weber, Diane Schrader, Linda Diem, Joyce Andrews and Charlotte Houle; THIRD ROW EDITORS: Marina Van Keuren, Jean Gottwald, Becki Feit, Julie Vuchetich, and Betty Jo Dicbold; FOURTH ROW EDITORS: Pam Bruehling, Karen Foley, Jean Koshak and Jean Balczewski. BELOW LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Busby was again the Advisor for Torch this year. Jean Peterson Gottwald was the Senior Editor. Junior Editor was Jean Koshak. 66 The darkroom - Jodi’s home away from home. The 1978 Torch was notable for several reasons; it came out on time, it was published out of state and it was headed by Jean Peterson Gottwald. In addition to taking on the re- sponsibility for the 1978 Torch, Jean was responsible for pulling things together in the 1977 Torch. Many students were un- aware that had it not been for Jean’s effort the 1977 and 1978 books would never have been published. We all owe her our thanks. In order to prepare our staff we attended a workshop in Rice Lake where we were exposed to ideas for our yearbook design and photography. Our staff averaged about twentyfive persons but the bulk of the book was produced by about ten people who consistently went beyond what was required of them. We had our share of problems with this book but we hope it justifies the efforts that went into it. Here comes another headache for Mr. Bus- by Jean did a lot of work as Junior Editor. Camera happy people for the Torch were Jon Resar, Don Tomc- zak, Jodi Knutson, Brenda Miller and Dale Van Patten. 67 Student Govm’t The student council has complet- ed another successful year. Our first major event was helping the classes set up the Homecoming activities. We also sent two repre- sentatives to the City Council and the School Board meetings. Pam Miller and Dave Diamond were on the City Council and Don Tomczak and John Jehn were on the School Board. Winter Carnival this year was on January 28. Our theme was “A Winter Wish.” The last thing we did before the end of the year was giving out two scholarships to two deserving sen- iors. They made signs and posters with the intention of arousing school spirit among all the students from grades 9-12, along with teachers. Our spirit signs supported the following sports: wrestling, boys and girls basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, boys and girls track, football, and golf. Great enthusiasm and school spirit has been shown this year by the many girls who volunteered to do the work in making this organization a success. We hoped all the work this organization has done this year has helped our teams reach their goal of winning seasons. FHA stands for Future Homemakers of America. Any girl in grades 9-12 can par- ticipate in FHA. Our meetings were every other Tuesday night after school in the Home Ec room. Our advisor was Ms. Au- ger. FHA works for the benefit of the school and community. FHA puts on hot dog sales, bake sales, and other money making pro- jects. Once a month the FHA club got together and played bingo with the people at the Park Manor Nursing Home. Performance This year, the Lincoln High band has had to adjust to a new director. Neverless, Mr. Tichkowski keeps the band going strong. Over the summer the marching band put in many hours of work preparing for street and field competition as well as the half-time field shows. The hard work paid off as the band came home with two first place from the Bloomer street and field competition in Bloomer, Wi. A third place trophy was received from the Eau Claire homecoming parade competition. The band also wrapped up a first place trophy at the Medford Mink Festival Parade. As the school year progresses, the band works on concert music to put on various concerts during the year. These include a Christmas concert, a Pops concert and a Spring concert. As spring nears, band members prepare for the annual music festival. Members have their choice of annual playing solos or ensembles. They compete first at district competition, and those who qualify go on to state. The band ends the year with the annual Memorial Day parade held in Park Falls. Do you guys write your own music? Fun! As in the past, Madrigals have had yet another successful year. This year’s Madrigal group, comprised of 15 members from Concert Choir, was selected by Mr. Anderson at spring tryouts. In December, the group hosted a very suc- cessful 17th Century Elizabethan-style dinner. People re- sponded well since a near capacity crowd attended both the Friday and Saturday night performances. Second semester the Madrigals practiced harder than ever as they prepared for contest. They sang a French song called Reveillez-Vous Tous Amoureux, Class A. Ginette Carlson helped with the pronunciation of the French. Mr. Anderson was very pleased with the overall Madrigal per- formances throughout the year and would like to have as good a group next year. The 1977-78 Madrigal singers were. With many returning let- termen for next years team, Coach Armstrong expects a highly successful season. 84 This year the golf team participated in fourteen matches. The team played at least two matches per week and a third match was often played. In addition, there was usually a tournament on Saturday. Those matches were usually held out of town. They consisted of nine holes of play, except tournaments which were eighteen holes of competition. The record produced by the 1977 team was the best since the team of 1971. With improved play for 1978 the team has a good chance to win the conference champion- ship. Coach Kadlecek says that the experience gained from the 1977 season will be the key to success for the 1978 season; the entire varsity team is returning. Individual championships went to Chris Reas (Spooner and Edgar), Pat Schmidt (Edgar), Roger Woody (Edgar, 3rd in Regional), Don Tomezak (Spooner, Edgar. 4th in Regional), Jerry Washatka (Spooner, Edgar, Conference, Re- gional, 4th in Sectionals), Tim Smith (Spooner. Edgar, Confer- ence, Regional, 3rd at Sectionals, State Qualifier), Mark Hilgart (Edgar, Spooner, Conference, 2nd at Sectionals, State Qualifi- er). Mr. Swenson felt that the excellent performances turned in by both the young and old members of the team will insure the success of the team in the future. Coached by Mr. Rand and Mr. Roe, the junior varsity wres- tling team compiled an impressive 13-1 record. Besides duel meets, the team also competed in our own annual J.V. tourna- ment and the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational (16 teams). Mr. Rand felt that the fine job done by this year's very young team will pay-off in the years to come. Mr. Swenson and Mr. Rand dedicated a lot of their time to the wrestlers. 94 Stick ’Em With A Pin . . . ABOVE: And that's the plan Got it? BELOW: JV Wrestlers were: FIRST ROW: Chris Reas. The Varsity girls were coached by Miss Bradke and the JV by Miss Hanson. The Cardinals finished fourth in the conference standings with a record of 3- 5. Their overall record was 3-8. At sub-regionals the Cardinals defeated Phillips and went on to regionals where they lost to Ladys- mith. Next year the Cardinals will lose only two seniors, so the returning members have a good chance to take conference. % The Varsity girls warm-up before the game. Cheerleaders must represent school spirit and sportsmanship so, crowd control is a big part of a cheerleader’s job. They must try to stop all booing and nasty chants by involving the crowd in cheers. Cheerleading tryouts are during March of the year prior to actual involvement. The cheerleaders are under the athletic code from the moment they are chosen until the end of their cheering season. For basketball and wrestling this is one full year including the summer months. All squads start practice during the summer and have one to two long practices each week. Cheerleaders’ duties frequently go beyond cheering, such as planning pep assemblies and parent’s night, making posters and locker decorations, raising school spirit, and run- ning numerous errands for the coaches. For all this involvement the girls do not receive a letter towards a letter jacket. ABOVE RIGHT: The wrestling cheerleaders pep up the crowd. Marie Burant I would like to say a special thank you to Dan Dctko, Mark Kronbcrger and Marla Miller for letting the staff use pictures they took in their photography class. I sincerely hope that the many hours of hard work put into this book are justified in helping all of you remember all those special times in your 1977 - 1978 year at Lincoln. My deepest thanks go out to those who helped in making this book a reality. Senior Editor Jean Peterson Gottwald 127 Autographs AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS A UTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS CARDINALS AT SECTIONALS AND STATE! The CARDS did it! They went to Madison for the first time in the history of Park Falls basketball. By many accounts their victory over Winneconne was a highlight of the State Basketball Tourna- ment. After a regular season record of 14-6 the CARDS went on to win Sectionals at Spooner. Friday night Park Falls met Arcadia, winning 72-65 in a hotly contested game. Saturday the CARDS played against Osseo-Fairchild, the top rated team in the state, scoring 80 points to Osseo’s 67 in an exciting, tension charged game. Dave Herbst led the CARDS in their assault from the free throw line. Rob Michalski, Dan Gehrman, John Flail, and David Greenwood made it look easy as they con- The CARDS return from State, trolled the boards. A measure of the excitement generated was the student involvement in supporting the CARDS. Three full busloads of students went to Spooner to support the team and fully half of them came back so hoarse they couldn’t speak. The following week at Lincoln High School de- fies description. Over 800 tickets were sold at the school, poster contests were held, there was a pep rally (which Mr. Gehrlach will long remember), and many speeches were made. WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO STATE! Wednesday morning the team left for Madison to prepare themselves to meet Winneconne. They had beaten Number 1, now it was time for Number 2. The game against Winneconne was played at 7:00 Friday evening. The CARDS came from be- hind to tie the game with less than a minute to play. Winneconne stalled, hoping to put the game away with their last shot. With less than 10 seconds re- maining Winneconne shot- and missed! That put the game into overtime. After another attempt by Winneconne to slow the game John Hall moved in to steal the ball and drew a foul. John made the first shot of his one and one putting Park Falls ahead 56- 55. Dave Greenwood pulled in the ball when John missed his second shot and drew a foul. Dave put the ball through for two more and iced the game. Final score 58-55. By Saturday afternoon the pressures and injuries of the last few games began to take their toll. De- spite a good team effort the CARDS came up short against a tough Elkhorn team. Throughout the tournament they played like the champions they are. This years Basketball season will be discussed by the people of Park Falls for years to come. Thanks to the team for putting so much of themselves into the season and a special thanks to Coach Szela- gowski and Mr. Burant, the Assistant Coach, for the guidance and support they gave. Coach Szelagowski receives Class B trophy, 2nd place. Sectional champs! U-RA-RA! Michalski-Elkhorn imam
