A very Special thank you to Mr. Busby. Without his help, this book would not have been published. 1 ■ A time to be born, and a time to die a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant A time to kill, and a time to heal a time to break down, a time to build up A time to weep, and a time to laugh a time to mourn, and a time to dance A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them, a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing A time to seek, and a time to lose a time to keep, and a time to cast away A time to rend, and a time to sew a time to be silent, and a time to speak A time to love, and a time to hate a time of war, and a time of peace. Hist 4m. svi i i-n 3 5 PIECES OF APRIL The 1976 Prom got underway when the class of ’77 and some under- classmen decorated the LHS gym. They did an outstanding job decorat- ing it with panels done in pastels for the sides (which were made by the art students), a real fountain and trees in the center of the floor, and a colorful rainbow over the throne. The finishing touch was made by a white candle on each table. All who attended the prom waited for 10:00 when King Tom Lobermeier and Queen Joanne Gottwald would lead the grand march to the music of the Entertainers from Ironwood. The junior attendants were Jon LaBlanc and Dolly Palecheck; the seniors were Jerry Wocelka and Jayne Neeck; sophomores were Dan Gustafson and Lori Gunderson; freshmen were Kevin Mann and Jean Koshak. Jenni Gottwald and Joe Stueber were crown bearers. The theme song, Pieces of April,” added a romantic touch for all who at- tended the sentimental affair. The prom had a wonderful turnout and everyone enjoyed themselves. Queen Joanne Gottwald and future queen Jennie Gottwald admire the pond. King Tom Lobermeier and Queen Joanne Gottwald reign over their Junior Prom. The Entertainers provided the music for the prom festivities. 6 Music was provided by Hazard. MISTY MOONLIGHT The fairly new festivity, Winter Carnival, which is sponsored by the student council, was held on January 29 of this year. The students that were interested in running for king and queen signed up and had their pictures taken to be dis- played in the front lobby. The student body then took over and voted on the couple of their choice. The results were Dale Rude as king and Debbie Wagner as queen. Primary court was Mark Symonik and Shari Martin. Secondary court was Mike Larson and Cheryl Mrotek. Crown bearers for the dance were Bobby Jirschele and Nola Koshak. The theme of winter carnival this year was Misty Moonlight. Everyone was reported to have had a wonderful time, with the entertainment by Hazard.” Queen and King for Misty Moonlight were Debbie Wagner and Dale Rude. Primary court was Shari Martin and Mark Symonik. and secondary court was Cheryl Mrotek and Mike Larson. The court has their dance. 7 HOMECOMING '76 The activities of the 1976 Homecoming started on Thursday when the student body wore a variety of different-looking hats. That night the students of LHS weaved their way through the downtown area. The destination was the athletic field where the members of the junior class built the bon fire, which was to be burned to the ground. When the spirit of the students grew to its maximum watching the Hurley foot- ball player crumble into the flames of the fire, they started the battle of the classes, which the junior class won. The following day a good portion of the students wore clothing consisting of red and white. With the hard play- ing of the football team and the grand spirit of the crowd, no wonder the Cards defeated the Hurley Midgets. The seniors and quite a few under- classmen decorated the gym for Saturday night. They had rainbow walls consisting of blues, greens, and The Park Falls Band again displays their expert talents at half-time by providing purples, and a simple decoration on entertainment and contributing to the Homecoming spirit, each table. The coronation started at 10:30 when freshman attendants David Post and Debbie Hilgart lead the procession. They were followed by sophomores Curtis Sheldon and Mary Radlinger, the junior atten- dants David Hilgart and Ann Balzar, and seniors Mike Larson and Chris Palecek. Following the senior atten- dants came King David Liebelt and Queen Laurie Hilgart. Brett Swen- son and Heather Swanson, the crown bearers, completed the procession. After the crowning, the king and queen and the other court members had the floor to themselves, while they danced to the music by Burst” from Ladysmith. Attendants lead the dancing. This photo tells the story. 8 Bill Abel poses for the camera in his costume for the snake dance. Julie Jehn helped to lead the cheers at the bon fire. The soaring flames of the bon fire got the Homecoming festivities underway. Crowds of enthusiastic students took part in the cheers. The band played an important part with its music. Mike Larson and Dolly Palacek were the senior attendants. 9 SADIE HAWKINS The girls at LHS got a chance to ask their favorite guy to the annual Sadie Hawkins dance, sponsored by the sophomore class, on November 12. The theme for the 1976 Sadie Hawkins dance was Magic Man. With the help of Marie Burant, Laurie Behreandt, Karen Herbst, Lisa Sheedy, Agnes Kanikula, and Carla Messerschmidt, the mood was set to perfection with silver moons and stars dangling over the heads of the students while dancing. Pizza and pop were available in the cafeteria for the students when they got hungry or thirsty after dancing to the music of Disco and Co.” Marie Burant, in charge of the af- fairs, was very pleased to see the tremendous turnout, but next year people have to eat more food! DISCO CO. provided an unusual form of entertainment for the Sadie Hawkins dance. Magic Man was the theme for the dance sponsored by the sophomore class. There was a good turnout for Sadie Hawkins and everyone had a great time dancing to popular hits. 10 s The assemblies of this year were the best we, students at Lincoln, have ever seen. The members of the student coun- cil selected the assemblies for the coming year. Along with the general assemblies we had several pep assemblies to raise the spirits of the student body. This year’s assemblies consisted of (1) James Wesly Jackson, (2) Mike and Michele, (3) Mime performance by Bruce C. Rathbun and (4) Clifford Guest. The students of LHS who helped to bring the assemblies should surely be congratulated. This is one pleasant change from the everyday school routine. James Wesly Jackson talked to the students and sang a variety of songs. “The Art Class was the title of a mime show. Students were truly fascinated by the mime performer Bruce C. Rathbun. 11 The Prince, played by Mrs. Pirrotta. receives the glass slipper that Cinderella had lost at the ball. Fairy Godmother. Margaret Romeril, tells Cinderella, Karren Engel, about her chances to go to the ball. CHILDREN'S THEATER CINDERELLA'' The Drama Club at L.H.S. wanted to do some- thing different this year, so they put on a chil- dren’s play. They chose Cinderella”. In the play, the actresses not only got the acting ex- perience but they had a lot of fun hamming it up. Cinderella was played by Karen Engel. The stepmother was Brenda Miller and her two daughters were Marina Van Keuren and Jenny Trochlil. Due to the lack of male interest, the part of the prince was played by Mrs. Pirrota. 12 Brenda Miller and her two daughters. Marina Van Keuren and Jenny Trochlil. await the coming of the Prince at the ball. THREE-ACT PLAY: OUR TOWN Our Town” by Thornton Wilder was the three-act play which was chosen by director Alyse Pirrota. The entire play takes place in Grovers Corners, New Hampshire. The play mainly revolves around Emily Webb played by Dolly Palecek and George Gibbs played by Scott Post, and their marriage later on in the play. The play ends with Emily Webb in the cemetery. Our Town” was presented to the people of Park Falls on March 25 and 26 in the St. Anthony’s auditorium. The cast and crew put a lot of time and effort to get the play to perfection. Not only should the cast be congratu- lated, but the technical crew should also be congratulated because they can make a huge difference between a well organized play and one that is not. CLOCKWISE: UPPER LEFT: George Gibbs played by Scott Post buys Emily a soda while they talk. UPPER RIGHT: Mr. Abrahamson looks on as Mary Nesja does her thing on making-up one of the cast members. LOWER RIGHT: Tom Dillon sits patiently as he had to wait for someone to finish making him up. LOWER LEFT: Jenny Trochlil, playing Mrs. Soames. lets the audience know what she thinks of the lovely wedding of George and Emily. Emily Webb gets a few reassuring words from her father. Ron Kundinger. 13 Torch is a lot of work! Again this year the torch staffhas tried to make the best yearbook ever. With a staff of only eight members trying to grasp all the happenings in a school year isn’t an easy task. With this few members, the staffhas to work much harder to try to meet our deadlines so you would receive your yearbook as early as possible. The staff sponsored many successful events during the year such as a car wash, record hop, and hot dog sales to try and raise money to go towards the torch fund. Mr. Busby was advisor for the torch again this year. He put a lot of time and effort in helping the staff to put together a good book and without him the job wouldn’t have been completed. Senioreditor, Mary Phillips, rummages through negatives tor the yearbook. Mr. Busby, advisor, took time out of his busy schedule to take a trip on the river. Mary and Marina strive for the best photos and writing materials for the yearbook. 14 YEARBOOK DEDICATION Mary Nesja and Janice Striegel help with making pizzas for the record hop that the staff held. 15 BANDS FOR ALL OCCASIONS LINCOLN SENIOR BAND MEMBERS. They were chosen for a half-time performance at a Green Bay Packer game. This gave them a chance to put Park Falls on the map. Their fright and anxieties were not evident in their performance. They did a fantastic job and the entire city is surely proud of their band. 18 SOMETHING OLD - AND GOOD The Madrigal singers consist of 15 members. The major event of the year was holding an early 17th century Elizabethan-style dinner. It was truly successful and is becoming a tradition at Lincoln. The members were Don Danielson, Jean Wardensky, Sam Soper, Jodi Knutson, Curtis Sheldon, Linda Boettcher, Mark Kronberger, Tom Lobermeier, Cheri Seiger, Sue Borne, Scott Post, Lori Wells, Jill Johnson, Jeff Wocelka and Maria Briske. Jennifer Anderson portrayed the court jester. 19 o CVJ CONCERT CHOIR Again this year Mr. Anderson did a superb job with Concert Choir. The peak of the year was a toilr to Washington, D.C. during Easter vacation. Not only was it a terrific sing- ing experience but they had a chance to see some of the important places that mark happenings in our country’s history. In seven days, the choir presented five concerts. This trip will surely be unforgettable, especially since the choir members raised the money for the trip them- selves. None of it would have been possible without the help and dedication of Mr. Anderson. Besides touring, the choir took part in four concerts. Rhythm, reading music and using their voices to the highest potential were some of the things the choir had to work on every day to achieve their outstanding musi- cal skills. GIRLS' CHOIR Girls’ Choir has completed its sixth year of existence. The number of the girls in this group nearly doubled from last year’s choir with close to 65 girls in it. More than half of these girls were freshmen. It was a lot of hard work for Mr. Anderson to teach these girls the correct way to sing. But it all paid off, as was evident in the three concerts the choir participated in. This was the second year that Girls’ Choir went Class A” in the music festival and also the second year they got a rating of first. The Girls’ Choir also helped raise money for Concert Choir’s trip to Washington, D.C. OFFICERS FOR GIRLS' CHOIR. Secretaries Mary Nesja and Debbie Hilgart. treasurer Martha Warshall. president Jean Peterson, and vice-president Betty Jo Diebold. 21 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CONTINUES TO GROW Junior and senior students with a grade point average of 3.5 and above are chosen along with their scholastic abilities for the Na- tional Honor Society. These students are chosen at the end of the first semester of their junior school year. This paid off in their trip to the North- land College theater to see The En- tertainer”. The club did something new in Lin- coln’s history. They presented Cin- derella” to the children of Park Falls. Both performances were full house. Besides the fun and satisfaction of put- ting on a children’s theater, they raised a bit of money from the small admission charges. It was the drama club advisor, Mrs. Pirrota, plus the enthusiasm of the club members that made the three-act play a success. The Prince, played by Mrs. Pirrotta. receives the glass slipper that Cinderella had lost at the ball. DRAMA CLUB MEMBERS. First row: Karren Engel, Barb Romeril. Second row: Margaret Romeril. The advisor for the club is Miss Auger, and the president is Jennifer An- derson. SPIRIT RAISERS The job of the Pep Club is to raise student spirit and to encourage stu- dents to go to the athletic events. The members put in many hours after school and at night to make posters for upcom- ing games. Signs for football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics are displayed on the walls of the school. A lot of work and fun were put into these signs the girls made. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council serves as the elected body representing the interests of the students before the school board and the teachers. Their other duties include selecting and setting up as- semblies. These are picked at the beginning of each year and pro- vide for the students’ entertain- ment. The council helped to set up Homecoming and Winter Carni- val events. They also decorated the school at Christmas time with a large Christmas tree. The Council is composed of 16 elected representatives, four from each class. This includes the pres- ident of each class. Members are chosen by the students them- selves. This year’s officers were Joanne Gottwald as president, Dolly Palecek as vice-president, and the secretary was Julie Jehn. 25 GERMISH CLUB - NEW AT L.H.S. The Germish Club was new to L.H.S. this year. It was made up of students in the German and Spanish classes. They held a Christmas party with the countries’ customs and foods. HEAD LIBRARIANS The librarians have many tasks working in the library. They have to be familiar with the library to know where a cer- tain book will be found. They check in and out materials and write out overdue notices. Also there is the job of putting away materials in their proper order so they may be found again. At the end of the year, an inven- tory of books has to be taken. This requires a lot of help in checking every book in the lib- rary to make certain it is in the proper place. They have to lo- cate lost books and also repair books for use next year. Mr. Burant is head librarian. He prepares audio and visual materials and checks to see they are in working order. He takes care of ordering new materials for the following year. 1976-77 LIBRARIANS: Jane Kundinger, Larry Hilgart. Jeanne Schrader. Sandy and Nancy both placed second at sectionals which qualified them for state com- petition. Sandy placed 6th and Nancy took 7th. The track team had an overall record of 5-5 in confer- ence dual meets. With a strong underclassmen force, Lincoln should see more action from the girls’ track team. The members put in a lot of hard work and dedication to do as well as they did this year. We should all congratulate this fine team and their coach for an exceptional job. Sheer concentration is shown by Tim Greenwood as he goes over the high jump. 45 Mr. Kadlecek shows the team how to make a chip shot. Cardinal Golfers As in the past years, coach Gary Kad- lecek headed up the 76-77 Cardinal golf team. Even though everyone gave their best, they didn’t have a very successful year. The Cardinals played on area courses where they competed against other con- ference and nonconference teams. Home matches were held at the Park Falls Country Club. The 76-77 team had an added twist this year with the addition of a girl member. Barb Hecimovich took a lot of razzing from fellow golfers and her coach, but she persisted and hopes to be on next year’s team. Can Mr. Kadlecek do it again? Tim Christianson stands motionless watching his putt. Kevin Mann really has to hit this putt hard to send it on its way. Members of the golf team were, bottom row: Dick Rebne, Bill Abel, Tim Christianson, Barb Hecimovich; top row: Ron Kundinger, Kevin Mann, John Hecimovich, Brian Ernst. 46 Baseball 1976 This year’s baseball team was coached by Mr. Armstrong. The members put a lot of hard work in at their practices, and it showed when they were pitted against some pretty tough teams. It was an exciting sea- son for everyone involved, and next year we’ll be looking for more of the same. BASEBALL TEAM MEMBERS - 1976 SUMMER SEASON. Front row: Tom Armstrong. Randy Briske. You can really see the team effort exerted by the JV members. The girls’ JV volleyball team had a very successful year. They won 17 games and lost 13. They took 8 of their sets against opposing schools, losing only 4. In many of the games lost, the teams were only separated by 2 points. With a relatively new squad of girls, they put out a fine effort and represented our school to the best of their ability. We’ll be look- ing forward to seeing these girls next year and hoping they will keep up the good work. Denise Cassidy has the perfect form for a back shot. 49 CARDINAL FOOTBALL This year’s football team was coached by Mr. Pirrota and the assistant coaches were Mr. Campbell and Mr. Sil. The team beat Hurley at our Homecoming game which made the night a pleasant one. They won four games and lost four games, which is a .500 season. The JV football team is the hopes of our future conference titles and standings. The guys put their techniques and experiences into their games, which they did very well. They practiced with the Varsity squad at times which provided a chance for some com- petition at their practices. After all, they will be the ones to take the places of the Varsity members who graduate, and again we can expect another exciting year from our Cards. They put this information into use when they scrimmaged against the JV team, which was to help improve their weak points. So when they did have their games, these weak points were not so weak any longer. Next year they will be ready to hold a position on the JV squad or possibly the Varsity team. Both sides line up for a Cardinal offensive play. Joel Kendrick and Ed Engel try to get an opponent that's in their way. 51 AUTOGRAPHS 53 Rick Larson tries to maneuver his man over onto his back. WRESTLERS CONTINUE PACE Coaches Swenson Lilyquist watch the action. Coached by Mr. Lilyquist and Mr. Cox, the JV wrestling squad com- piled a season record of 11-3. Tour- nament champions were Kyle Graf, Don Tomczak and Dan Gustafson. Also placing in the tournament were Chris Reas, Mark Szcep- kowski, Rick Engel, Joe Palacheck and JefTStriegel. Letter winners this year were the four JV team captains: Kyle Graf, Don Tomczak, Dan Gustafson, and Jeff Striegel. Pat Schmidt also wrestled a couple of fine matches at the varsity level. Coach Swenson feels that such fine wrestling performed by this year’s JV match will surely help continue the varsity standing next year. MEMBERS OF THE VARSITY WRESTLING SQUAD. This is the second straight year that the Cards have gone undefeated (29-0) and won the conference title. The team was also champion of the Spooner In- vitational, the Ladysmith Team Invi- tational, and the WIAA Regionals. Sophomore Jerry Washatka had the best season of his career with a thirty and five record. This included 15 pins, which earned him the Cardinal Headhunters’ Award. Jerry placed first at the WIAA Sectionals and went on to place fourth in the Wisconsin State wrestling meet in Madison. Other Cardinal standouts were Tim Smith, who placed second in confer- ence; Jim Washatka, who was reg- ional champion; Mark Hilgart, who was regional champion; Jeff Treml, who was second in conference; and Ron Meyer, who was regional champion. (Note: Mr. Swenson has, in four years, compiled an overall record of 49-9 in dual meets.) Rick Larson is all concentration while trying to defeat this logger opponent. The girls came in first out of six teams at the Cadott invitational. They came in fourth out of twelve teams at Rice Lake, and third out of nine teams at Altoona. Dee Spiller went to sectionals on parallel bars and represented Park Falls quite well. Nancy Zipperer, Glenda Graf, Dee Spiller, Cindy Geng, Julie Jehn, and Mary Singer all received letters for their year’s performance. CARDINAL BASKETBALL The Cards this year were coached by Mr. Szelagowski, who did a fine job getting the Cards started on a winning streak. This was his third year as head coach. Our Cards provided us with another exciting season and once again made us proud to be represented by them. They put all of their techniques to- gether in a game, and came out look- ing pretty good. Congratulations on a job well done! 58 JV FRESHMAN Once more the J V team displayed their talents in basketball. They did a fine job, and we’re sure that their coach, Mr. Longrie, had something to do with that. Next year, thanks to his coaching and the boys them- selves, we may have some new faces on our varsity team. The freshman team was intro- duced to some new moves and plays during their practices. They put it all together very nicely in their games. The coach was Mr. Burant. We’re looking forward to hearing some exciting things about these boys in the years to come. JV TEAM MEMBERS. Because of this, the team had to put in a lot of hard work to do as well as they did. The Varsity team had almost an equal record of wins and losses. Many of the girls on this year’s Varsity were play- ing for our school for their first time. This added greatly in leadership and in cooperation. The girls practice evenings at the elementary school. Anyone who went and saw their practice sessions also saw the degree to which these girls put everything they had into the game. Besides Varsity, there was a JV and a freshman team. These two teams practiced with the Varsity team, often having scrimmages against the diffe- rent teams. If this many girls continue to show interest in basketball, we should have some very fine teams next year. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM. Back row: K. Kilger, Susie Thums. Pam Miller. Dane. L. Hardzinski. E. Rickert (President). Don Tomczak. Mr. Frokjer has more than school responsibilities. Here he is taking care of his cattle. The school board plays a much more important part in running our school than most students realize. The board is made up of nine elected members, Mr. Frokjer, and two student council members who were Don Tomczak and Jean Peterson. The board has to decide everything that goes on with school financing and student activities. One important thing the school board did this year was to organize a citizens’ committee for planning the new high school. 68 BUS DRIVERS: J. Sheedy. H. Roberts. S. Martin. M. Hanson. L. Hanson. They also transport fans and players to games and matches and students to other extra-curricular activities. The cooks at Lincoln are up early preparing delicious breakfasts and then work through the morning making well-balanced lunches for students and teachers. Although there is no picture for the custodians, they still should get a lot of credit for all the work they do.
